Lot 1 A BR(S) doorplate, PERMANENT WAY INSPECTOR, (f/f), enamel, length 18", a small chip repainted above the top left fixing and similar at the base of the second 'N'. £350-500 - Sold for £1500 to commission or postal bidder number 714.

Lot 2 A worksplate, LONDON & NORTH EASTERN RAILWAY, 65786, R. STEPHENSON & Co, 1906, from a North Eastern Railway Class P3, LNER J27 Class, 0-6-0 No 888 which was actually built at Darlington in June 1906 and renumbered 5786 in 1946, becoming BR 65786. A long time North Blyth engine, it was withdrawn from there on 16 April 1962 and cut up at Darlington Works. Although ten J27s were built by Robert Stephenson in 1909, none were built by this company in 1906, so the details on the plate are erroneous, nevertheless an interesting example. Cast brass, 9"x5", cleaned but unpainted. £350-500 - Sold for £250 to commission or postal bidder number 4995.

Lot 3 A GWR signal lever plate, SWANSEA LINE/XOVER. Engraved brass, 3¾" long. £100-200 - Sold for £1400.

Lot 4 A LNER six tone chime whistle from Faverdale Works, Darlington, possibly supplied by Crosby. Brass, 22½" tall, diameter 6". The wall mounted operating equipment accompanies the whistle. £400-600 - Sold for £420.

Lot 5 A LB&SCR banner signal repeater, brass case, 3½" diameter, in original condition. An unusual example with red butterfly banner. £150-300 - Sold for £420.

Lot 6 A shedplate, 73E Faversham (1948 to June 1959). This ex SECR shed was home to 30 locos during the 1950s. Ex loco condition. £150-300 - Sold for £620.

Lot 7 A signal box nameboard, WELWYN GARDEN CITY, from the East Coast Main Line. Cast letters on wood, with beading, length 102", repainted. £200-350 - Sold for £780.

Lot 8 A worksplate, ALLEY & MacLELLAN, SENTINEL, C2265, from a 6-ton steam waggon of 1919, registration No AW 4594, supplied new to Levy Brothers & Knowles Ltd, Sack Makers of 28-30 Henry Street, Liverpool, their fleet No 5. There were no subsequent owners and it was last licensed for road use in December 1937. Cast brass, 5"x9¾", the front lightly polished. £200-350 - Sold for £360.

Lot 9 A BR(NE) totem sign, BROUGH, (h/f), from the Hull to Selby and Doncaster route. Excellent condition. £700-1000 - Sold for £1450.

Lot 10 A Caledonian Railway silver plated drinks salver by Walker & Hall, 10½" diameter, with ball feet. £150-300 - Sold for £140.

Lot 11 A single line key token, THAME-MORRIS COWLEY, (alloy), from the Oxford to Princes Risborough route which closed to passengers in 1963, freight continuing until 1967. £150-300 - Sold for £320 to commission or postal bidder number 1043.

Lot 12 A shedplate 9K Bolton (September 1963 to July 1968). This ex LYR shed, formerly 26C, had 60 locos when using this code. Cleaned and the front repainted. £100-200 - Sold for £340 to commission or postal bidder number 1334.

Lot 13 A BR(Sc) doorplate, PARCELS, (f/f), enamel, length 18", a chip to the top right fixing. £100-200 - Sold for £130.

Lot 14 A worksplate, NORTH BRITISH LOCOMOTIVE COMPANY, 27881, 1959 from Class 22 D6308. New to Plymouth Laira in January 1960; withdrawn from there in September 1971 and cut up at Swindon Works in May 1972. Cast brass, 12¾"x5½", in ex loco condition. £400-600 - Sold for £720.

Lot 15 A LNER double royal poster, ULLSWATER, by Frank Henry Algernon Mason, 1875-1965. £150-300 - Sold for £700.

Lot 16 A Rhodesian Railways builders plate, Bulawayo Workshops 1945, from a coach. Cast brass, 18"x3", cleaned but unpainted. £80-120 - Sold for £100.

Lot 17 A BR(M) totem sign, PYE BRIDGE, (f/f) from the Erewash Valley route between Nottingham and Chesterfield. The station closed in 1967 and was situated just south of the present Alfreton & Mansfield Parkway. Mottling and blemishes in the lower panel. £500-800 - Sold for £400.

Lot 18 A smokebox numberplate, 47260, from a LMS Class 3F 0-6-0T No 7100, the first of the Class built by Vulcan Foundry, Works No 3717, in 1924, renumbered 7260 in 1934, becoming BR 47260. Allocated to Kentish Town by January 1935 and later St Albans and Cricklewood before returning in February 1941 to Kentish Town from where it was withdrawn on 25 June 1960 and cut up at Derby Works. Ex loco condition. £300-500 - Sold for £460 to commission or postal bidder number 4696.

Lot 19 A Great Western Railway door plate, PARCEL OFFICE. Cast iron, length 23¾", the front repainted. £100-200 - Sold for £180.

Lot 20 A Tyers no.6 single line tablet, MABLETHORPE STATION-SUTTON ON SEA, (brass), from the East Lincolnshire loop between Willoughby and Louth, the southern end closing in 1970. £250-400 - Sold for £820.

Lot 21 A Southern Railway running in board, PETROCKSTOWE, (flangeless) from the North Devon and Cornwall Junction Railway from Torrington to Halwill, opened in 1925 and closed in 1965. Enamel, two sections 47" and 50" by 12". £400-600 - Sold for £720.

Lot 22 A smokebox numberplate, 1660, from a (GWR) 1600 Class 0-6-0PT built at Swindon and allocated new on 23 February 1955 to Croes Newydd where it spent all its working life. Withdrawn on 22 February 1966 after exactly eleven years in service, it was taken for scrap by Cashmores at Great Bridge on 26 September 1966. Ex loco condition. £300-500 - Sold for £220.

Lot 23 A Channel Island Airways pilots cap badge. The service was incorporated on 12th December 1934, joint Great Western Railway & Southern Railway. It became part of British European Airways on 1st February 1947. Felt and gilt wire, 3"x2". £80-120 - Sold for £130 to commission or postal bidder number 3451.

Lot 24 A worksplate, NEILSON REID, 6047, 1901, from a Great Central Railway Class 9J 0-6-0 No 985 which became LNER J11 Class No 5985 and was renumbered 4292 in 1946, becoming BR 64292. Allocated to Annesley by January 1948, it moved in 1955 to Staveley GC and in 1960 to Darnall from where it was withdrawn on 20 July 1962 and subsequently scrapped. Cast brass, 6¾"x4¼", the front repainted. £350-500 - Sold for £300.

Lot 25 A LMS quad royal poster, WESTERN SCOTLAND, by Norman Wilkinson, 1878-1971. A little wear at fold intersections. £300-500 - Sold for £380 to commission or postal bidder number 8138.

Lot 26 A worksplate, Manning Wardle, 1555, 1902 from a MW Class G 0-6-0ST IC new to Pauling & Co, Contractors, of Uxbridge, on 28 February 1902 as their No 56 NORTHOLT for use on the Northolt Junction-High Wycombe section of the GW/GC Joint line and later used for work on the Limpley Stoke to Camerton branch. It was purchased by the Freshwater, Newport and Yarmouth Railway for use on the Isle of Wight on 4 June 1913. The Railway was taken over by the SR at the 1923 grouping and this loco became W1 in May 1924, painted in Maunsell green. In October 1928 it was named MEDINA with the nameplates attached to the side tanks under the word SOUTHERN. It became Medina Wharf shunter before being withdrawn in June 1932 and a year later was sent to Eastleigh Works to be cut up. The nameplates were removed and fitted to an E1 class 0-6-0T which also took its number W1. Cast brass, 11"x6", in ex loco condition. £1500-2000 - Sold for £4900.

Lot 27 A signal box diagram, SALTOUN STATION, from the Gifford and Garvald Light Railway, a branch south east of Edinburgh worked by the NBR, passenger services ceased in 1933, final closure came in 1965. 31½"x14", in original frame. £200-350 - Sold for £300.

Lot 28 A LNER seat back plate, ASLOCKTON, from the Nottingham Victoria to Grantham route. Cast iron, length 32", original condition. £300-500 - Sold for £1050 to commission or postal bidder number 2362.

Lot 29 A salt glaze earthenware flagon, REFRESHMENT DEPARTMENT, GWR, PADDINGTON, 15½" tall, diameter 8¾". £100-200 - Sold for £240.

Lot 30 A BR(M) totem sign, OLNEY, (f/f), from the Northampton to Bedford route which closed in 1964, the station closing to passengers two years earlier. £500-800 - Sold for £1450 to commission or postal bidder number 1043.

Lot 31 A shedplate 88B Cardiff East Dock (1949 to March 1958), then Radyr (October 1960 to July 1965). The former GWR depot at East Dock was home to 60 locos in the 1950s which included an exotic collection of antiquated tank engines. The depot was run down and lost its allocation in 1958, but was to rise from the ashes in September 1962, now coded 88L, when it inherited all of Cardiff Canton's steam allocation; Castles, Halls, Granges and Manors now graced the shed. Ex GWR shed Radyr had taken this code over in 1960, and had around 50 locos during this period. Repainted. £100-200 - Sold for £160 to commission or postal bidder number 7829.

Lot 32 A station stamp, ALTNABREAC STATION, H.Ry, from the Sutherland and Caithness section of the far North Line to Wick and Thurso. Height 3¼" with brass head and turned wooden handle. £150-300 - Sold for £360 to commission or postal bidder number 1380.

Lot 33 A worksplate, ORENSTEIN & KOPPEL, BERLIN, No 12664, 1935, together with its owners plate, COMHLUCHT SIUICRE EIREANN TEO (Irish Sugar Company Ltd), TUAM, and O&K emblem, from a 0-4-0T, which unusually also had a well tank, one of nine 5ft 3ins O&K CSET Class locos built in Nazi Germany for three of the Company's sugar beet factories in Ireland, this example one of three used at the Tuam factory in County Galway, their No 3. These were known locally as sugarpuffs. This set of plates was acquired by the vendor with permission in 1966 soon after the loco was withdrawn. The works plate and owners plate were attached to the cabside, the emblem to the smokebox door. Each cast brass, the worksplate, 13¼"x5", the owners plate, 10½"x6", the emblem, 7¼"x4½", the fronts repainted. (3) £500-800 - Sold for £1600.

Lot 34 A Furness Railway captains chair, an early style marked with the company's initials underneath. A 1985 Collectors Corner receipt stated that it originated from Workington. Excellent original condition. £200-350 - Sold for £100.

Lot 35 An O gauge, fine scale, kit built model of GWR Castle Class 4-6-0 5012 BERRY POMEROY CASTLE in green GWR livery. Two rail 12V motor, built to an excellent standard, with fine detail throughout, including backhead, brake and sanding gear, drop link couplings and train pipes. £300-500 - Sold for £730.

Lot 36 A BR(M) station sign, TO THE TRAINS, (f/f), enamel, 18"x12", a minor rim chip neatly repaired. £150-300 - Sold for £520.00.

Lot 37 A destination plate from the Waterloo departure indicator, VENTNOR, enamel, length 17", mounted on its original triangular wooden block. £300-500 - Sold for £2100.

Lot 38 A GWR cabside numberplate, 6869, from a 6800 Grange Class 4-6-0 built at Swindon in March 1939 and named RESOLVEN GRANGE after a monastic grange five miles from Neath, South Glamorgan, and attached to Margam Abbey. Allocated to Old Oak Common by January 1948, its later sheds included Penzance, Laira, St Philips Marsh, Southall and Cardiff East Dock from where it was withdrawn in the week ending 10 July 1965 and sold for scrap to Birds Commercial Motors at Morriston on 25 August 1965. Cast brass, in ex loco condition. £1200-1600 - Sold for £1900 to commission or postal bidder number 8360.

Lot 39 A signal box nameboard, BUBWITH, from the Selby to Driffield route. The station closed in 1954, the line finally closing in 1965. Wood with cast letters and beading, length 38", in original condition. £200-350 - Sold for £420.

Lot 40 A carriage print, BEN NEVIS, INVERNESS-SHIRE, by Roland Hilder, R.I, from the LNER pre-war series. £100-200 - Sold for £150.

Lot 41 A worksplate, ALCO, BROOKS WORKS, 66284, 1925, from a standard gauge 2-8-2 new to the Cuba Railroad. Later sold to the sugar industry where it was well known as MINAZ No 1910 at Ifrain Alfonso sugar mill near Holguin in central Cuba, one of the largest Cuban steam engines to survive into the 1990s. Cast brass, 13¾"x7¼", in ex loco condition. £200-350 - Sold for £480.

Lot 42 An armband, LSWR, FLAGMAN, enamel with leather straps. £100-200 - Sold for £500.

Lot 43 A nameplate, BENGAL, from the LMS Jubilee Class 6P 4-6-0 No 5577, later BR 45577, built by the North British Locomotive Co, Works No 24135, in 1934 and named on 30 March 1937 after an Indian state. Allocated new to Crewe North on 18 September 1934, it soon moved to Carlisle Upperby and in January 1936 to Carlisle Kingmoor where it remained until moving to Bristol Barrow Road in September 1952. It stayed at Barrow Road until September 1961 when it was transferred to Shrewsbury from where it was withdrawn in the week ending 5 September 1964 and sold for scrap to Birds Commercial Motors at Morriston. Cast brass, 23¾" long. £8000-9000 - Sold for £9200.

Lot 44 A BR(E) totem sign, GAINSBOROUGH CENTRAL, (h/f), from the Retford to Cleethorpes route. A small chip restored to the right of the upper and lower panel. £600-900 - Sold for £1300 to commission or postal bidder number 7296.

Lot 45 A GWR cabside numberplate, 2847, from a 2800 Class 2-8-0 built at Swindon in December 1912. Converted to oil burning and renumbered 4811 in September 1947, it was re-converted and regained its original number in June 1949. Allocated to Laira by January 1948, it moved the following year to Banbury where it spent over eight years before moving towards the end to Cardiff Canton and Severn Tunnel Junction from where it was withdrawn on 9 March 1960 and cut up at Swindon Works in the week ending 9 April 1960. Cast brass, in ex loco condition. £800-1200 - Sold for £1750 to commission or postal bidder number 2682.

Lot 46 A Southern Railway signal box plunger with enamel ring, MELDON QUARRY. The box was between Oakhampton and Tavistock on the main line to Plymouth. £150-300 - Sold for £540 to commission or postal bidder number 3451.

Lot 47 A direction sign, SOUTHERN RAILWAY, STATION, (flangeless), double sided enamel, 27"x12", in superb condition; one small chip on the arrow on one side. £200-350 - Sold for £850.

Lot 48 A shot glass, THE HIGHLAND RAILWAY COMPANY, STATION HOTEL, INVERNESS, 3¾" tall, featuring the company's coat of arms, The glass is prominently marked, the design 3¾"x2¾". £100-200 - Sold for £150.

Lot 49 A smokebox numberplate, 11304, from a Lancashire & Yorkshire Railway 528 Class 0-6-0 No 558 built by Sharp Stewart & Co, Works No 2704, in August 1877 as a tender engine but rebuilt by the LYR as a 0-6-0 saddle tank in July 1891. It became LMS Class Class 2F No 11304 and was allocated to Horwich Works for use a Works shunter. Although allocated the BR number 51304, it continued to carry this LMS smokebox numberplate until withdrawal from Horwich Works in the week ending 23 December 1961. It was cut up at the Works on 22 March 1962. In ex loco condition. £500-800 - Sold for £3300.

Lot 50 A Metropolitan Railway trespass notice, cast iron, 22¾"x17", in original condition. £150-300 - Sold for £520.

Lot 51 A worksplate, AVELING & PORTER, 4851 from a 10 ton steam road roller, fitted with compound cylinders and overhead slide valves, which was ex works on 26 September 1901. It was exported to Europe as the customer was a Mr H.H.Meyer of Riga in Latvia. No further details are available, but it seems likely that the roller was scrapped and the worksplate retained leading to its eventual purchase by a collector. Engraved brass, 10¾"x8", the front lightly cleaned and characters painted. £200-350 - Sold for £340.

Lot 52 A GWR Tyers train describer from the Birmingham Snow Hill area. A sending instrument with clockwork mechanism. Locations include North Warwickshire, Tyesley, Hockley, Great Bge, Moor Street. A fine old instrument in original condition. £800-1200 - Sold for £1100.

Lot 53 A smokebox numberplate, 5553, from a GWR 4500 Class 2-6-2T built at Swindon in November 1928. Allocated to Bristol Bath Road by January 1948, it moved in November 1958 to Machynlleth and two years later to St Blazey from where it was withdrawn on 16 November 1961 and sold for scrap to Woodham Bros at Barry on 9 February 1962. Ex loco condition. £250-400 - Sold for £480.

Lot 54 A single line key token, MALLAIG JCT-ANNAT, (brass), from the West Highland extension from Fort William to Mallaig. £100-200 - Sold for £120.

Lot 55 A BR(M) totem, GRINDLEFORD, (f/f) from the Hope Valley Line between Sheffield and Manchester. Excellent condition. £500-800 - Sold for £1700 to commission or postal bidder number 7166.

Lot 56 An industrial locomotive nameplate, ANSON, with its matching worksplate, PECKETT, No 2117, 1950, from a 0-4-0ST which went new to Albert E. Reed & Co Ltd at Aylesford Paper Mills, New Hythe, Kent. It spent a brief period on loan to Imperial Paper Mills Ltd at Gravesend in 1966, returning to Aylesford, and was scrapped in about 1971. The nameplate, cast brass 24½" long, the front repainted, the worksplate, engraved brass, 15"x8½", the face lightly polished. (2) £500-800 - Sold for £600.

Lot 57 A BR(S) double royal poster, JERSEY, THE SUNNY CHANNEL ISLE, by Kerry Lee, 1904- , produced in 1950, edge nicks repaired, pin holes in corners. (AD6114) £150-300 - Sold for £85.

Lot 58 A Southern Railway signal box plunger with brass ring, FOREST HILL MAIN, from the Croydon to New Cross Gate route. £100-200 - Sold for £130 to commission or postal bidder number 8406.

Lot 59 A LNER Marylebone, china cup and saucer, a matching pair by Copeland Spode. The cup has a crack from the rim, though this is away from the wording and does not show when displayed. Together with a group of LNER Marylebone Tea Rooms china, tea plate, sugar bowl and milk jug by Copeland Spode, a distinctive floral design, the company and location shown on the base. Lot 60 A single line key token, MABLETHORPE-LOUTH, (chromed steel), from the northern end of the East Lincolnshire loop which closed in 1960. £100-200 - Sold for £660.

Lot 61 A Crewe Cat depot plaque removed from a class 31 in Dutch livery stored at Rugby, cast aluminium, 17¾" square, together with matching double arrows emblem, 17"x27½", both in ex loco condition. (2) £200-350 - Sold for £480 to commission or postal bidder number 2722.

Lot 62 A single line key token, BRORA-HELMSDALE, (brass), from the Far North Line from Inverness to Wick and Thurso. A rare brass example from the section; the keys are normally of the chromed steel variety. £150-300 - Sold for £440 to commission or postal bidder number 1380.

Lot 63 A GWR cabside numberplate, 6429, from a 6400 Class 0-6-0PT built at Swindon in November 1935. A long time Pontypool Road engine, its later sheds were Croes Newydd, Banbury and Wellington from where it was withdrawn on 15 March 1962 and taken for scrap by Cashmores at Newport on 7 May 1962. Cast iron, in ex loco condition. £350-500 - Sold for £400.

Lot 64 A BR(M) doorplate, PARCELS AND LEFT LUGGAGE, (f/f), enamel, length 18", a rim chip repaired to the lower left corner. £100-200 - Sold for £200.

Lot 65 A worksplate, NEILSON, 3457, 1885, from a London & South Western Railway 395 Class 0-6-0 No 69 built in November 1885. Renumbered 83 in March 1889, it became SR 0395 Class No 3083 and BR 30565. Allocated to Guildford by January 1948, it moved in October 1950 to Eastleigh from where it was withdrawn in the week ending 14 February 1953 and cut up at the nearby Works in the week ending 24 October 1953. Cast brass, 10¼"x6", cleaned and polished. £400-600 - Sold for £440.

Lot 66 A BR(S) totem sign, GOUDHURST, (f/f), from the Paddock Wood to Hawkhurst branch which closed in 1961. Several minor rim chips repainted, one to the right end is just into the green. £2500-4000 - Sold for £9200.

Lot 67 A Furness Railway staircase balustrade, the company monogram cast within the centre, cast iron, 35" tall, repainted. £100-200 - Sold for £190 to commission or postal bidder number 3319.

Lot 68 A London and South Western Railway three aspect handlamp by Fley & Son, complete with original L&SWR vessel, side door and brass makers plate, Fley & Son, Clerkenhall, London. The lamp has a S(E)R plate on the top. £200-350 - Sold for £300.

Lot 69 A worksplate, KERR STUART, 4375, 1927, from a LMS Class 4F 0-6-0 No 4347 which became BR 44347. Allocated to Llandudno Junction by January 1948, its later sheds were Stoke, Abergavenny, Shrewsbury, Tebay, Barrow for twenty-five years, and finally Lower Darwen from where it was withdrawn in the week ending 27 March 1965 and cut up by Drapers at Hull in the week ending 4 September 1965. Cast brass, 12¾"x6¾", the front repainted. £400-600 - Sold for £680.

Lot 70 A LNER horseshoe lamp tablet, STAVELEY TOWN, from the Great Central Main Line. The station was renamed Staveley Central in 1950 and closed in 1963. Enamel, 13"x4¾", edge chips restored. £150-300 - Sold for £440.

Lot 71 A GWR quad royal poster, PENZANCE, The gateway to the romantic Lands End district, by J.W. Lias. A fine pre-grouping example, laid down to conserve. £500-800 - Sold for £2100.

Lot 72 A worksplate, LMS, BUILT 1884, ST ROLLOX. Locos built by the Caledonian Railway at St Rollox in 1884 included 171 Class 0-4-4T all of which were withdrawn in the 1920s, and two 294 Class 0-6-0 Nos 353/4 both of which survived until the early 1960s as 57250 and 57251, so this plate is almost certainly from one of those two. Cast brass, 10½"6", the front repainted. £300-500 - Sold for £290.

Lot 73 A Sykes, London Brighton & South Coast Railway banner signal repeater with brass case, 4" diameter, in excellent original condition. £100-200 - Sold for £700.

Lot 74 A North British Railway door plate, GENERAL OFFICE, NBR, 1917, used at St. Margarets loco shed in Edinburgh, engraved brass, 10"x5", the front polished. £100-200 - Sold for £420.

Lot 75 A Southern Railway target sign, RAVENSBOURNE, from the Nunhead to Shortlands Junction route. Minor edge chips, the sign retains its original backboard with brass screws and washers, excellent condition. £200-350 - Sold for £320 to commission or postal bidder number 3765.

Lot 76 A worksplate, BAGNALL, 3124, 1957, from a 2ft gauge 0-6-0DM new in December 1957 to Baldwins (S. Africa) Ltd at Rustenburg Platinum Mines in South Africa. Cast brass, 12"x7", in ex loco condition, an additional fixing above the works number. £150-300 - Sold for £140.

Lot 77 A departure board, MELTON, LEICESTER BELGRAVE ROAD, used for trains via the GN & LNWR Joint Line to the Great Northern terminus in Leicester. Regular passenger services ceased in 1957. Painted wood, 39"x5", in original condition. £150-300 - Sold for £120.

Lot 78 A nameplate, 257 SQUADRON, with BATTLE OF BRITAIN CLASS appendage below, together with its matching badge depicting the Burma Squadron crest and motto which translates as For Death or Glory, from the (Southern Railway) Bulleid Light Pacific 4-6-2 No 34072 built at Brighton in April 1948, one of the Class which retained its original streamlined casing to the end. Allocated new to Dover on 24 April 1948, it moved to Exmouth Junction in February 1958 with a final four months at Eastleigh from where it was withdrawn on 25 October 1964 and sold for scrap to Woodham Bros at Barry where it remained until acquired for preservation in November 1984 by the Southern Locomotives Group. Following restoration at Swindon Works in 1990, it operated on a number of preserved railways until withdrawn for a second time in January 2003. A major overhaul commenced in 2012 and is nearing completion. A fine set in totally ex loco condition. £40000-45000 - Sold for £33500.00.

Lot 79 A Lancashire & Yorkshire Railway signal box instrument plate, LUDENDENFOOT EAST. The box was on the Manchester and Leeds route between Sowerby Bridge and Mytholmroyd. Engraved brass, length 5". £80-120 - Sold for £90 to commission or postal bidder number 8383.

Lot 84 A GWR cabside numberplate, 8750, from the class leader of the modified version of the earlier 5700 Class 0-6-0PT, built at Swindon in September 1933. Allocated to Old Oak Common by January 1948, it moved at the end of 1952 to Southall where it spent nearly eight years, before departing for Swansea East Dock from where it was withdrawn on 7 May 1962 and sold for scrap to Central Wagon Co at Wigan on 25 June 1962. Cast iron, repainted. £300-500 - Sold for £460.

Lot 85 A LNER seat back plate, ROTHBURY, from the terminus of the North British branch from Scotsgap Junction on the Wansbeck line. The station had the unique distinction of being the only English branch terminus built by a Scottish company. Cast iron, 28" long, the front repainted. £400-600 - Sold for £680 to commission or postal bidder number 290.

Lot 87 A worksplate, LMS, NCC, 1932, BELFAST. No locos are listed as being built at the Northern Counties Committee Works at York Road, Belfast in 1932 and only one is listed between 1929 and 1934 which is No 4 GLENARIFF, a 5'3" gauge U1 class 4-4-0 later renumbered 4A and withdrawn in 1949 which is listed as a 1931 build, so it seems likely this plate is from that loco as often plates can be one year different from records. Cast brass, 10½"x6", the characters polished, otherwise original condition. £300-500 - Sold for £780.

Lot 89 A worksplate, LONDON & NORTH EASTERN RAILWAY 1324, 1947, from a (LNER) B1 Class 4-6-0 built by the North British Locomotive Co, Works No 26225, in June 1948, the year after the date on this plate, and numbered 61324 from new. Allocated new to Kittybrewster on 1 June 1948, it spent thirteen years there before moving to Dalry Road and then St Margarets from where it was withdrawn on 12 October 1965 and sold for scrap to Campbells at Airdrie. Cast iron, 9"x5", repainted. £150-300 - Sold for £220.

Lot 90 A County Donegal Railway leather document pouch with brass plates, CONVOY (S&LR)-STRANOLOR, the initials referring to the Stabane and Letterkenny Railway, a constituent of the County Donegal Railway. £100-200 - Sold for £210.

Lot 91 An oil gauge headed BR(STD) showing level of oil to valves and pistons, brass with engraved face, 8½" diameter. £80-120 - Sold for £210.

Lot 92 A BR(M) totem sign, DALTON, (f/f), from the Barrow to Ravenglass section of the Cumbrian Coast route. A small face chip restored and a minor blemish. £300-500 - Sold for £600.

Lot 93 A locomotive cabside numberplate, C, CHEMIN DE FER KATANGA-DILOLO-LEOPOLDVILLE 409, from a 3ft 6ins gauge 2-8-2 built by Haine St. Pierre, Works No 1631, in 1928, one of a batch of 18 for the Belgian Congo. This railway was incorporated in 1927 to create a new link for Zambian copper to the Benguela Railway's Atlantic ports. Engines from most of the Belgian manufacturers were ordered for the new traffic but numbered in the existing Chemin de Fer Bas-Congo au Katanga's roster. These railways later became the C.F. Kinshasa-Dilolo-Lubumbasi which has long since been dieselised as the SNCF Zaireois. Cast brass, 15¾"x10", in ex loco condition. The plate was rescued by a member of the Canadian Forces following a derailment; it has recently arrived from Canada. £300-500 - Sold for £700 to commission or postal bidder number 2905.

Lot 94 A group of Stevens signal lever plates, each engraved brass, 3¼"x4¾". Wordings include, WANSBECK UP HOME, COLLIERY POINTS, COLLIERY SIGNAL. Wansbeck was close to Morpeth, junction for Scotsgap and Reedsmouth. (6) £150-300 - Sold for £280 to commission or postal bidder number 4538.

Lot 95 A shed plate 1A Willesden (1935 to September 1965). This ex LNWR shed was home to over 130 locos in the 1950s and in its final few months still maintained 70. The front repainted. £100-200 - Sold for £110.

Lot 96 A Southern Railway locomotive whistle from a Battle of Britain Class Bulleid Pacific, 34084, 253 Squadron. Brass, height 13", diameter 3", sold with the BR receipt which indicates the locomotive from which it was removed. £500-800 - Sold for £400.

Lot 97 A smokebox numberplate, 43826, from a Midland Railway 2736 Class 0-6-0 No 3826 built at Derby in 1908, retaining this number in LMS days and becoming BR 43826. At Toton by January 1935, it remained there until moving in November 1959 to Gorton from where it was withdrawn on 14 November 1961 and subsequently scrapped. Lot 104 A smokebox numberplate, 65791, from a North Eastern Railway Class P3, LNER J27 Class, 0-6-0 No 1016 built at Darlington in September 1906, renumbered 5791 in 1946, becoming BR 65791. A long time Percy Main engine, it was withdrawn from there on 12 October 1964 and subsequently scrapped. Ex loco condition. £300-500 - Sold for £420.

Lot 106 A shedplate 88A Cardiff Cathays (1949 to December 1957), then Cardiff Radyr (December 1957 to October 1960), then Cardiff Canton (October 1960 to September 1962). The ex TVR shed at Cathays had an allocation of 80 locos, while ex GWR shed Radyr had 55 locos during this period. Ex GWR Canton­'s allocation of 130 included 12 Britannias until September 1961. Canton closed to steam in September 1962 and became a diesel depot. Ex loco condition. £100-200 - Sold for £180.

Lot 107 A Saxby & Farmer signal finial, the side marked, SAXBY & FARMER LD CHIPPENHAM, B RLY Co. Cast iron, 30¾" high. The finial may be of Barry Railway origin though it is not the usual style. £100-200 - Sold for £230.

Lot 115 A GWR cabside numberplate, 3160, from a 3150 Class 2-6-2T built at Swindon in May 1907. It spent its BR days at Stafford Road from where it was withdrawn on 1 July 1953 and cut up at Swindon Works in the four weeks ending 5 September 1953. Cast brass, in ex loco condition. £500-800 - Sold for £1050.

Lot 116 A nameplate, HINTON MANOR, from the GWR 7800 Manor Class 4-6-0 No 7819 built at Swindon in February 1939 and named after the 16th Century manor house in the village of Hinton Waldrist, west of Abingdon in Oxfordshire. A regular performer on the Cambrian Coast Express, it spent most of its working life at Oswestry before moving towards the end to Machynlleth and Shrewsbury from where it was withdrawn in the week ending 6 November 1965 and sold for scrap to Woodham Bros at Barry on 16 December 1965. It was rescued from Barry for preservation in 1973 and went to the Severn Valley Railway where it was restored to full working order, although it has been on static display at the Swindon Designer Outlet since 2007. £7000-9000 - Sold for £8000.

Lot 118 A worksplate, LONDON & NORTH EASTERN RAILWAY, 67323, DARLINGTON, 1900, from a North Eastern Railway Class O, LNER G5 Class, 0-4-4T No 2094 built at Darlington in December 1900, renumbered 7323 in 1946, becoming BR 67323. Allocated to Blaydon by January 1948 and later Middlesbrough and North Blyth from where it was withdrawn on 8 December 1958 and cut up at Darlington Works. Lot 120 A smokebox numberplate, 32563, from a London Brighton & South Coast Railway E4 Class 0-6-2T No 563 built at Brighton in December 1901 and named WINEHAM after a village in the Company's territory, although the name was removed before the end of 1910. It retained its LBSCR number in SR days but was later renumbered 2563 and became BR 32563. Allocated to Norwood Junction by January 1948, it spent most of its BR days at Nine Elms and Eastleigh from where it was withdrawn in the week ending 1 July 1961 and cut up at Ashford Works in the week ending 5 August 1961. In ex loco condition, a weld repair between 5 and 6, the back is marked with the BR(S) triangle. £400-600 - Sold for £640.

Lot 124 A BR(M) totem sign, RUGELEY TOWN, (f/f) from the Walsall to Rugeley Trent Valley route; the station closed in 1965. Lot 125 A smokebox numberplate, 8786, from a GWR 8750 Class 0-6-0PT built at Swindon in January 1934. Allocated to Ebbw Junction by January 1948 and later Aberdare, Pontypool Road and Aberbeeg before moving to Nine Elms on 14 July 1963, officially for just one day, being withdrawn on 15 July and cut up at Swindon Works in the week ending 5 October 1963. Repainted. £250-400 - Sold for £150.

Lot 126 A GWR pulley wheel signal finial used to lift signal lamps to the top of tall posts. Length 34", the wheel 12½" diameter, unrestored. £150-300 - Sold for £430.

Lot 127 A shedplate 51L Thornaby (June 1958 then closed to steam December 1964, diesel depot lost the code in 1973). This purpose built BR shed inherited the steam allocation of 110 locos from the redundant sheds at Middlesbrough and Newport. It was intended to have become a diesel only shed by 1962, but by the end of 1964 still looked after 3 V2s, 5 Q6s, and 3 J27s. Many of its diesel allocation also carried this code. The front repainted. £100-200 - Sold for £150.

Lot 129 A worksplate, LONDON & NORTH EASTERN RAILWAY, 5259, SHARP STEWART, 1892, from a North British Railway Class C 0-6-0 No 688 built by Sharp Stewart, Works No 3778, in February 1892. It became LNER J36 Class No 9688 and was renumbered 5259 in 1946, becoming BR 65259. A long time Hawick engine, it moved in 1955 to Bathgate from where it was withdrawn on 2 July 1959 and sold for scrap to Motherwell Machinery & Scrap at Wishaw on 17 November 1959. Cast brass, 9"x5", the front repainted. £500-800 - Sold for £560.

Lot 136 A worksplate, PECKETT, 1402, 1915, from a standard gauge Peckett type B2 0-6-0ST named PROGRESS, new in May 1915 to Desborough Co-operative Society at Desborough Ironstone Mines, Northants. The company later became a subsidiary of the South Durham Steel & Iron Co and in 1926 they sent PROGRESS to Blackwell & Son, Northampton for overhaul. It moved from there to the company's Irchester Ironstone Quarries, Northants where it worked until sold for scrap to George Cohen, Sons & Co. Ltd, Cransley, Northants in December 1966. Engraved brass, 12"x9½", the front lightly polished. £300-400 - Sold for £740.

Lot 137 A single line, One Engine in Steam, train staff, REDFORD JUNCTION-KINGLASSIE COLLIERY, (brass). The colliery branch left the Thornton Junction to Dunfermline route west of Glenrothes. A substantial staff with hexagonal body, overall length 15½", with steel key at the end. £250-400 - Sold for £660.

Lot 138 A BR(M) station sign, BRITISH RAILWAYS, RADLETT, NO ENTRANCE FOR VEHICLES. The station was on the Midland main line, south of St Albans. Enamel, 33"x24", a couple of small face chips and edge chipping. £200-350 - Sold for £100.

Lot 139 An early 20th century GWR 12" drop case, London made clock in good restored condition. Overall height: 27¼". The case entirely constructed from solid mahogany. Box with chisel base containing a door closed by a shaped brass turn and with two side doors. Front with standard Ivorine number plate marked G.W.R. 1774. Four piece convex moulded dial surround containing a cast brass bezel with integral, silvered sight ring and bevelled glass. Dial written B.R.-W. when sold by the railways, now repainted and written with the standard GWR roundel, marked 1774 on the rear. Hands of blued steel. Chain fusee movement with maintaining power, between rectangular plates with screwed pillars. After taking clock servicing in-house in 1921 the GWR bought clocks direct from London makers notably Stockalls, probably the suppliers of this clock. Complete with pendulum, winding key and notes from a restorer. £1000-1500 - Sold for £1600 to commission or postal bidder number 2948.

Lot 140 A BR(W) totem sign, ASHCHURCH FOR TEWKESBURY, (f/f) from the Gloucester to Birmingham main line. The Tewksbury branch closed in 1964, Ashchurch station in 1971. Excellent condition. £1000-1500 - Sold for £3300.00.

Lot 141 A GWR cabside numberplate, 6303, from a 43XX Class 2-6-0 built at Swindon in December 1920. A long time Croes Newydd engine, it moved towards the end to Reading and Shrewsbury from where it was withdrawn on 1 April 1959 and cut up at Swindon Works in the week ending 9 May 1959. Cast brass, the front repainted. £400-600 - Sold for £680.

Lot 142 A North British Railway cash bag with brass plate, N.B.R, BERVIE, from the terminus of the coastal branch from Montrose, renamed Inverbervie in 1926. Passenger services ceased in 1951 with final closure in 1966. Leather with brass plate, in fine original condition. £100-200 - Sold for £140 to commission or postal bidder number 705.

Lot 143 A worksplate, HUNSLET 2121, 1940, from a standard gauge 0-4-0DM new in December 1940 to Royal Ordnance Factory No 34 at Wrexham, as their No 2. In 1946 it was taken over with the site by Wales & Monmouthshire Industrial Estates Ltd and sold around May 1962 to dealers Thos. W. Ward Ltd. of Sheffield. Sold by them to Duncan Logan (Plant) Ltd, of Muir of Ord, Ross & Cromarty. They used it on a number of contracts in Scotland including the Tay road bridge contract where it came to a sticky end, falling off the bridge and being wrecked in 1965 or 1966, although this worksplate survived undamaged. It was eventually disposed of for scrap around 1970. Cast brass, 11½"x8", the front repainted. £100-200 - Sold for £240.

Lot 144 A North Eastern Railway Dining Cars china bon-bon dish with ribbed edge, pale green lettering, 4½" square. £50-80 - Sold for £50.

Lot 145 A depot plaque YORKSHIRE ROSE for Tinsley, formerly carried by Class 47 47213. Cast aluminium 17¾" square, the front lightly cleaned. £150-300 - Sold for £300.

Lot 147 A smokebox numberplate, 41083, from a LMS Class 4P 4-4-0 No 1083 built at Derby in 1924. Allocated to Low Moor by January 1935, is later sheds included Holbeck, Derby and Kentish Town, before returning to Derby from where it was withdrawn on 19 December 1958 and taken for scrap by Cashmores at Great Bridge on 15 January 1960. Ex loco condition. £300-500 - Sold for £940.

Lot 148 A BR(W) totem sign, DANZEY FOR TANWORTH, (f/f) for the North Warwickshire line, the station situated north of Henley-in-Arden. A little mottling and a couple of small chips at the top edge restored. £400-600 - Sold for £580.

Lot 149 A nameplate, St. MARTIN, from a 0-6-0ST built by Avonside, Works No 2064, in 1931. It went new to Pearson & Dorman Long Ltd at Betteshanger Colliery, Kent and became National Coal Board property, still at Betteshanger, in January 1947, later spending some time at Snowdown Colliery before returning to Betteshanger. It was scrapped in June 1966. Cast brass, 28½"x 6", the front repainted. £400-600 - Sold for £720 to commission or postal bidder number 7565.

Lot 156 A GWR cabside numberplate, 6921, from the 4900 Hall Class 4-6-0 BORWICK HALL built at Swindon in July 1941 and named in January 1948 after the house two miles from Carnforth now run by Lancashire County Council as an outdoor activity centre. Allocated to Worcester by January 1948 and later Gloucester, Laira, Didcot, Reading and Oxford from where it was withdrawn in the week ending 9 October 1965 and cut up at Banbury shed by James Friswell, the nearby scrap merchant. Lot 158 An industrial locomotive numberplate UNITED STEEL Co. LTD, No.85, WORKINGTON BRANCH, from an industrial diesel locomotive, later in the ownership of the British Steel Corporation. Cast aluminium, 19"x10½", in ex loco condition. £100-200 - Sold for £150.

Lot 161 A nameplate OSPREY from the Peppercorn A1 Class 4-6-2 No 60131 built at Doncaster, Works No 2050, in October 1948 and named in June 1950, a re-use of the name but not the nameplates originally bestowed on the Gresley A4 No 60003 until that engine was renamed after a LNER director. Allocated new to Kings Cross, it moved three years later to Grantham and in 1953 to Copley Hill where it spent over nine years before late spells at Ardsley and Neville Hill from where it was withdrawn on 4 October 1965 and despatched for scrap to T.W. Ward at Killamarsh on 25 November 1965. Cast brass 40¾", the front repainted. The back bears the names of other locomotives that had nameplates of the same length. Lot 170 A worksplate, L&NER, 1762, 1918, from a Great Northern Railway Class H3 2-6-0 No 1671 built by the North British Locomotive Co, Works No 21982, in June 1918. It became LNER K2 Class No 4671 and was renumbered 1761 in 1946, becoming BR 61761. Allocated to Stratford by January 1948, its later sheds included Lincoln GN, Darnall and Kings Cross from where it was withdrawn on 19 January 1961 and cut up at Doncaster Works. Lot 172 A worksplate, BUILT 1951, CREWE, from the BR Standard Britannia Class 7MT 4-6-2 No 70010 built at Crewe and named OWEN GLENDOWER after the Welsh chieftain who conducted war against the English on the Wales/England border. Allocated new on 5 May 1951 to Norwich where it spent more than ten years before moving to March and later Willesden, Crewe North, Crewe South and Carlisle Kingmoor from where it was withdrawn in the week ending 23 September 1967 and sold for scrap on 28 November 1967 to J. McWilliam at Shettleston. Cast iron, 10½"x6", the front lightly cleaned, the number 70010 painted on the back a long time ago. £200-300 - Sold for £880.

Lot 179 A single line One Engine in Steam train staff, SEATON JUNCTION-UPPINGHAM, (alloy/brass). The branch from Seaton on the Market Harborough to Peterborough route, closed to passengers in 1960, freight continuing until 1964. Length 18", with steel key fitted to the end. Lot 180 A worksplate, ARMSTRONG WHITWORTH, 1204, 1935, from a LMS Class 5 4-6-0 No 5163 which became BR 45163. Allocated new on loan to Crewe North on 29 July 1935, its first permanent shed was Perth the following October where it remained until 1950, moving to Corkerhill, and in 1952 to Carlisle Kingmoor from where it was withdrawn in the week ending 15 May 1965 and despatched for scrap to Woodham Bros at Barry on 25 November 1965. Lot 181 A Great Northern Railway semaphore signal repeater, brass case, 4¼" diameter, in original condition. £100-200 - Sold for £190.

Lot 182 A shedplate 12B Carlisle Upperby (1935 to June 1950), then Carlisle Canal (June 1950 to July 1951), then Penrith (October 1955 to February 1958), and finally Carlisle Upperby (February 1958 to closure to steam January 1968). This code is probably best known for its use as Carlisle Upperby, the ex LNWR shed having around 90 locos at the height of its importance. The ex NBR shed at Canal had the distinction of having four A3s and five D49s carrying this LMR code among its 60 occupants. Out of use between 1951 and 1955, only six locos at Penrith carried 12B until Upperby regained it in 1958. Ex loco condition. £100-200 - Sold for £440.

Lot 198 An exceptionally large, mid-19th century, 24", teak-cased, wall-hanging LC&DR longcase regulator clock of standard design from Dover Marine and latterly Tattenham Corner. Overall height 90 inches. Case in ex-station condition except both doors cleaned. Trunk with plinth supported by well carved ears, full length trunk door secured by a replaced lock and chisel base. Forward sliding pedimented hood secured by an internal turn, with glazed door containing cast brass sight ring; lock present but door now secured by a latch. Inside of trunk door stamped 1034 SE and with standard SECR brass number plate marked 1034. Backboard, lacking two peripheral wooden sections at top, also stamped 1034 S.E. Substantial, weight-driven, wire-line, six-pillar deadbeat regulator movement with Harrison’s maintaining power. 24" dial repainted and written with the standard BR(S)/ John Walker details and numbered 1034 SE. Rear of dial marked 1034 SE, Tattenham Corner and TC. Hands of unpainted brass, one with a well-executed repair; both counterbalanced in the movement. SR records show it was originally used on the Down Platform at Dover Harbour opened in the 1860s, a likely date for this clock, and was moved (presumably after the closure of this station in 1927) to Tattenham Corner which was fully reopened in 1928. There it was used in the Circulating Area where it would have been viewed by Derby crowds. Complete with wood-rod pendulum with 6" brass cased lenticular bob, 15 lb. lead weight £2000-3000 - Sold for £2400 to commission or postal bidder number 2681.

Lot 201 A nameplate, WARDOUR CASTLE, from the GWR 4073 Castle Class 4-6-0 No 5066 built at Swindon in July 1937 and named after the Wiltshire Castle four miles from Shaftesbury, a ruin in the care of English Heritage usually known as Old Wardour Castle. It was renamed Sir Felix Pole in April 1956 after the former General Manager of the GWR who died three months earlier. A long time Old Oak Common engine, it was withdrawn from there on 1 September 1962 and taken for scrap by Cashmores at Great Bridge on 19 December 1962. £8000-12000 - Sold for £7250.

Lot 203 A worksplate, NEILSON REID, 5697, 1900, from a South Eastern & Chatham Railway C Class 0-6-0 No 691 built in July 1900, becoming SR 1691 and BR 31691. Allocated to Faversham by January 1948, it moved in July 1951 to Hither Green from where it was withdrawn in the week ending 21 October 1961 and cut up at Ashford Works by the end of the following week. Lot 209 A shedplate 82A Bristol Bath Road (1950 to September 1960 for steam). This ex GWR shed was home to around 100 locos during the 1950s. The star studded allocation included 6 Counties, 9 Stars, 21 Castles, 14 Halls and a solitary King in 1950. On becoming a purpose built diesel depot in 1960, some of its allocation carried these codes before the alloy version was introduced. Repainted. £100-200 - Sold for £170.

Lot 220 A worksplate, BEYER PEACOCK, 1891, from a 5ft 6ins gauge 0-6-2 condensing tank supplied by Beyer Peacock, Works No 3123, to the Royal Portuguese Railway, their No 013. It was rebuilt as a 2-6-2T some time between 1923 and 1930 and became Portuguese State Railway No 032 in 1952. Two of the Class are preserved, the remainder, including this one, were scrapped between 1960 and 1975. Cast brass, 17"x8", the front repainted, the back marked 032. £500-700 - Sold for £520.

Lot 222 A worksplate, LB&SCR, BRIGHTON, 91, 1912, from a London Brighton & South Coast Railway I3 Class 4-4-2T No 91 which emerged from Brighton Works in June 1913. It became SR 2091 and BR 32091. Allocated new to Brighton, it was at Eastbourne by January 1948 and later Three Bridges and back to Brighton from where it was withdrawn in the week ending 10 May 1952. It was cut up at Ashford Works on 13 February 1953, the last of the Class to go with the highest recorded mileage. Lot 230 A (GWR) cabside numberplate, 7028, from the GWR 4073 Castle Class 4-6-0 CADBURY CASTLE built at Swindon in May 1950 and, according to Swindon records, named after an ancient earthwork at Thorverton near Exeter. Allocated new to Landore on 19 May 1950, it spent most of its working life there with a brief stay at Carmarthen and a final couple of years or so at Llanelly from where it was withdrawn on 28 December 1963 and sold for scrap to Barlborough Metals at Chesterfield on 19 March 1964. Cast brass, the front repainted. £3500-4000 - Sold for £3000.00.

Lot 231 A Caledonian Railway hire blanket, brown wool with the full company name in red and Perth, B13 woven in. These blankets were hired out to seated passengers on overnight trains. A rare survivor in good condition with just a little wear in places. £50-80 - Sold for £120.

Lot 232 A worksplate, VICTOR, and its matching numberplate, No 5, from a standard gauge 0-6-0DM built by Hudswell Clarke, Works No DM921, in 1955 and supplied new to John Lysaght Ltd at Scunthorpe as their No 5. Allocated to Hereford by January 1948, it finished its days at Bristol Bath Road from where it was withdrawn on 15 November 1951 and cut up at Swindon Works in the four weeks ending on 26 January 1952. Lot 238 A shedplate 66A Polmadie (1949 to May 1967 for steam). This ex CR shed had 182 locos allocated in 1959. They included 5 Royal Scots, 2 Princess Royals, 7 Coronations, 3 Britannias and 5 Clans. In just six years this number had dwindled to 40, but did include 3 A2 Pacifics. Lot 240 A tenderplate, LNER, 8245, STRATFORD, 1912, from a Great Eastern Railway 3500 gallon tender coupled new with GER Class E72 0-6-0 No 1245 which became LNER J18 Class No 8245 and was renumbered 4645 in 1946, becoming BR 64645 and withdrawn in December 1958. Tenders were, however, frequently exchanged during works visits to Stratford, especially between locos of the same class. Cast iron, 10"x6", the front repainted. £100-200 - Sold for £160.

Lot 241 A worksplate, BUILT 1955 DERBY. Locos built at Derby in 1955 were BR Standard Class 5 4-6-0 Nos 73075-99, a solitary BR Standard Class 4 2-6-4T No 80058 and BR Class 08 diesel shunters Nos 13097-124 and 13167-206, renumbered D3097-124 and D3167-206, most of which survived to be further renumbered in the 08XXX series. Cast brass, 10½"x6", in ex loco condition, a small section milled from the lower rim to clear a rivet. £150-300 - This lot did not sell at the auction. Lot 242 A signal box nameboard, RED HALL. The box was on the East Coast Main Line, between Welwyn Garden City and Brookmans Park. Cast letters on wood, with beading, length 45", repainted. £150-300 - Sold for £540.

Lot 243 A nameplate, WELSH GUARDSMAN, from the LMS Royal Scot Class 7P 4-6-0 No 6117, later BR 46117, built by the North British Locomotive Co, Works No 23612, in 1927 and named by April 1928 after the guards regiment raised in London in 1915. Allocated new to Crewe North in October 1927, and later Carlisle Upperby and Holyhead before moving in March 1944 to Holbeck where it remained until September 1961. It then moved to Low Moor and Mirfield and finally back to Holbeck from where it was withdrawn on 26 November 1962 and cut up at Crewe Works by 13 December 1963. Lot 244 A BR(W) totem sign, GOBOWEN, (f/f), from the Shrewsbury to Chester main line, the junction for Oswestry. Several small face chips neatly restored. £350-500 - Sold for £430 to commission or postal bidder number 7891.

Lot 245 A shedplate 64G Hawick (1949 to January 1966). This ex NBR shed had an allocation of 24 locos in early BR days, and by closure it was home to just 5. The front repainted. £150-300 - Sold for £1600.

Lot 246 A worksplate, ANDREW BARCLAY, 859, 1900, from a 0-4-0ST new to Langloan Iron & Chemical Co. Coatbridge, Lanarkshire, which closed in 1921. Taken over (with loco) in 1938 by Thos. W. Ward Ltd as a wagon repair depot. Sold to the War Department in 1942, becoming WD 222, later 70222 SAPPER at Weedon Technical Stores Depot, Northants. Sold February 1949 to Abelson (Engineers) Ltd, Sheldon, Birmingham for use as a hire locomotive. Sold July 1952 to Joseph Perrin, Haulage Contractor, Birkenhead, where it was named VULCAN. Sold for scrap January 1964 to Robert Smith & Sons, Birkenhead. Cast brass, 16¾"x11¾", in ex loco condition. £400-500 - Sold for £400.

Lot 247 A smokebox numberplate, 3846, from a GWR 2884 Class 2-8-0 built at Swindon in May 1942. Allocated to Reading by January 1948 and later Oxford, Cardiff Canton, Stourbridge, Banbury and Croes Newydd from where it was withdrawn on 1 November 1963 and despatched for scrap to T.W. Ward at Broughton Lane on 9 April 1964. Ex loco condition. £350-500 - Sold for £350.

Lot 250 A Pullman Car armchair. The design and carving suggest that it was originally used on one of the GWR Super Saloons built for the ocean liner traffic to Plymouth. Recovered in red, usable condition with minor wear. £400-600 - Sold for £650.

Lot 252 A worksplate, No. 2078, DONCASTER, 1951, from a (LMS) Class 4 2-6-0 No 43108 allocated new to New England on 25 May 1951. It moved a month later to South Lynn where it spent eight years working on Midland & Great Northern lines before departing in March 1959 to Boston and later Colwick, New England, Barrow Hill, Canklow and Langwith Junction from where it was withdrawn on 14 November 1965 and sold for scrap to Cox & Danks at Wadsley Bridge. Engraved brass, 12¼"x6½", the front lightly polished, the back marked 43108. £400-600 - Sold for £520 to commission or postal bidder number 3510.

Lot 253 A LNER seat back plate, BEVERLEY, from the Hull to York and Bridlington route. Cast iron, length 28", the front repainted. £400-600 - Sold for £500.

Lot 254 A GWR cabside numberplate, 6019, from the 6000 King Class 4-6-0 KING HENRY V built at Swindon in July 1928. Allocated to Laira by January 1948 and later Bristol Bath Road and Newton Abbot before arriving in July 1950 at Old Oak Common where it spent the next ten years. It then moved to Cardiff Canton returning to Old Oak Common for a final six months until withdrawal on 7 September 1962. It was taken for scrap by Cashmores at Newport on 30 April 1963. Cast brass, the front repainted. £7000-10000 - Sold for £11000 to commission or postal bidder number 1710.

Lot 255 A Caledonian Railway signal box shelf plate, GLASTERLAW STATION BOX. The box was on the Stanley to Kinnaber Junction route situated between Forfar and Bridge of Dun. Engraved brass, 4½"x1". £50-80 - Sold for £120.

Lot 256 A nameplate, TIMOUR, carried first by a Great Western Railway Broad Gauge Iron Duke Class 8ft single built at Swindon in August 1849 and which ceased work in November 1871, and secondly by an Iron Duke Renewal or Rover Class 4-2-2 8ft single built at Swindon in July 1873. The later engine worked between London, Swindon and Bristol and from 1876 to Newton Abbot. It remained in service until the abolition of the Broad Gauge was undertaken in May 1892 when 177 miles of track between Exeter and Penzance were altered over one weekend by over 4,000 men. The name is that of a Mongol Chief (1335-1405) who conquered much of Eastern Europe and Asia. The plate is 58" long. It was purchased from the GWR by Mr D. L. Evans for £2 2s in 1892 (the other side not recorded as sold, and not surviving.) A letter from Swindon Works to a member of the Evans family, dated 1959, answering an enquiry about the history of the plate is sold with this lot. The plate has been in the ownership of the same family for 125 years. £15000-25000 - Sold for £19000.

Lot 257 A Tyers No.6 single line tablet, DEREHAM WEST JUNCTION-SWAFFHAM, (alloy), from the Kings Lynn to Dereham route which closed in 1968. £100-200 - Sold for £210.

Lot 258 A worksplate, LONDON NORTH EASTERN RAILWAY, 1705, DONCASTER, 1928, from the LNER A3 Class 4-6-2 No 2748 built in December 1928 and named COLORADO after the racehorse owned by Lord Derby which won the 1926 2000 Guineas. Renumbered 94 in 1946, it became BR 60094. Although starting its life at Doncaster and Kings Cross, it moved in 1929 to Carlisle Canal, where it worked mainly over the Waverley route, followed by fourteen years at Haymarket before ending its days at St Margarets, Eastfield and St Rollox from where it was withdrawn on 24 February 1964 and sold for scrap to Hendersons at Airdrie. Fully engraved brass. 13½'x7¾", the front lightly polished, original green paint to the rim, the back stamped 2748 and 94. £3000-4000 - Sold for £6000.

Lot 259 A BR(M) totem sign, CASTLETHORPE, (f/f) from the Wolverton to Rugby section of the West Coast Main Line. The station closed in 1964. One small chip at the right side of the top panel. £400-600 - Sold for £720.

Lot 260 A locomotive headboard, THE HEART OF MIDLOTHIAN, as carried on the Kings Cross to Edinburgh (Waverley) service introduced on 3 May 1951 to coincide with the Festival of Britain. Its last titled run was on 4 May 1968. Cast aluminium, the front repainted, the back in original condition and marked Return to Kings Cross. The top of the rim is stamped EMP A3/2 (Eastern Motive Power A3 and A2), a reference to the classes of loco which could carry this headboard. £1500-2500 - Sold for £3200.

Lot 265 A LMS platform lamp case with name, BALDOVAN and DOWNFIELD. The station was north west of Dundee on the 1831 built Dundee and Newtyle Railway, closed in 1955 to passenger traffic and freight a decade later. The lamp is complete with its interior fitting and the copper body has been cleaned and polished, overall height 23". £250-400 - Sold for £320 to commission or postal bidder number 705.

Lot 266 A shedplate, 88D Merthyr (1949 to November 1964), then Rhymney (November 1964 to April 1965). The ex GWR shed at Merthyr had 55 locos in the 1950s. The ex RR shed at Rhymney had an allocation of 19 56xx 0-6-2T during its short time as a coded depot. Ex loco condition. £100-200 - Sold for £170.

Lot 270 A smokebox numberplate, 46257, from the (LMS) Princess Coronation Class 8P 4-6-2, CITY OF SALFORD, the last of the Class built at Crewe and allocated new on 19 May 1948 to Camden where it spent ten years before moving to Carlisle Upperby in September 1958 and finally in March 1963 to Carlisle Kingmoor from where it was withdrawn in the week ending 12 September 1964 and despatched for scrap to West of Scotland Ship breaking at Troon on 1 December 1964. Early in 1956 it was borrowed by the Western Region and allocated to Old Oak Common for three weeks when the King Class were temporarily taken out of service. Lot 272 A nameplate, AMINGTON. NO 3., from a standard gauge 0-6-0ST built by Bagnall, Works No 2508, in 1934. New to Glascote Colliery Co Ltd at Amington Colliery, Tamworth, where it was named. The Colliery became part of the National Coal Board in January 1947 and this loco moved to Pooley Hall (North Warwickshire) Colliery in June 1951 and later to Baddesley Colliery where it was subsequently scrapped. Cast brass, 40¼" long, the front repainted. £600-900 - Sold for £2200.

Lot 273 A worksplate, GREAT NORTHERN RAILWAY, DONCASTER, 1145, 1907, from a GNR/LNER N1 Class 0-6-2T, the first of the Class built in April 1907, GNR No 190. It became LNER No 3190 and was renumbered 9430 in 1946, becoming BR 69430. A long time Copley Hill engine, it was withdrawn from there on 10 December 1956 and cut up at Doncaster Works. Fully engraved brass, 17½"x9½", the front lightly polished, the back stamped 3190. £1000-1500 - Sold for £1200.

Lot 276 A nameplate, MARBLE HALL, from the GWR 4900 Hall Class 4-6-0 No 5907 built at Swindon in May 1931 and probably named after the London pleasure gardens demolished in about 1820 to make way for the Lambeth end of Vauxhall Bridge. Allocated to Tyseley by January 1948 and later Gloucester, Oxford, Old Oak Common and Reading from where it was withdrawn on 3 November 1961 and cut up at Swindon Works before the end of the same month. £6000-7000 - Sold for £5600.

Lot 277 A late 19th century LYR 12" mahogany roundhead clock from Brighouse. Overall height: 14¾" inches. Box back stamped L.Y three times, pin holes in the top where a location plate would have been fixed and many pinholes in the left side, an LYR characteristic. Single side door and replaced bottom door. Four piece dial surround a replacement but with original peg battens fitted. Dial written B.R. (N.E.) 15782 over the shadow of Agar & Sons L.Y.R. **** Bury, the LYR number scratched off. Old spun bezel with sight ring now soldered in place. Wire fusee movement between shaped plates with feet and knopped pillars. Front plate scratched 15782. Pendulum bob stamped 1755, possibly the LYR number. Dial number indicates an LMS clock taken over by the North Eastern region after nationalisation. Records show that it was used in the Parcels Office at Brighouse. Complete with pendulum, winder and copy of record card. £600-900 - Sold for £1150 to commission or postal bidder number 8383.

Lot 278 A shedplate 84G Shrewsbury (1950 to September 1960). The ex GWR/LNWR Joint shed had used 4 different BR codes by the time it closed to steam in November 1967. Formerly LMS 4A, a code which BR used until 1950; it became WR 84G then 89A, and finally 6D on transfer to the LMR in 1963. The late 1950s allocation using this code included 7 Counties, 15 Halls, 4 Castles and a pair of Manors. Lightly cleaned, the front repainted. £100-200 - Sold for £220.

A long time Dunfermline engine, it was withdrawn from there on 28 December 1963 and sold for scrap to Arnott Young at Old Kilpatrick. Lot 286 A worksplate, STALINA, 1497, 1950, from a 5ft gauge 0-10-0 class €r built for the Russian State Railways (SZD) No 785-91. This builder was the Cegielski factory in Poland which changed its name for 7 years in the 1950s for political reasons. Cast aluminium, 16"x8", the front cleaned but unpainted, and sold with its matching CCCP coat of arms, 12¼"x14". (2) £100-200 - Sold for £170.

Lot 293 A worksplate pattern, BEYER PEACOCK, 1950 with Australian Garratt patents. The only Garratts built in 1950 were ten 3'6" gauge 4-8-2+2-8-4s built for Queensland Government Railways, Works Nos 7341-50, and based on the War Department Light Garratt design, QGR Nos 1001-10. Normally the works number digits were placed in the recessed box of the pattern as each sequential plate was cast. Cast aluminium with brass rim to the rear, 19¼"x10", the works number sequence noted on the front of the plate. £150-300 - Sold for £140.

Lot 295 A GWR cabside numberplate, 5231, from a 4200 Class 2-8-0T built at Swindon in June 1924. Allocated to Carmarthen by January 1948 and then Llantrisant, it spent most of its BR days at Newport Pill, moving towards the end to Aberbeeg and Cardiff East Dock from where it was withdrawn in the week ending 18 April 1964 and taken for scrap by Cashmores at Newport on 2 September 1964. Cast iron, in ex loco condition. £300-500 - Sold for £480.

Lot 296 A worksplate, LMS BUILT 1927 DERBY. Locos built at Derby in 1927 were Class 3P 4-4-2T Nos 2125-34, which became BR 41943-52, Class 4 2-6-4T Nos 2300-3, which became BR 42300-3 and Class 4F 0-6-0 Nos 4288-301 and 4407-36, which became BR 44288-301 and 44407-36. Lot 297 A worksplate, BIRMINGHAM CARRIAGE & WAGON Co. DEL 127, 1960 from Class 33 D6535 later 33116. New to Hither Green in December 1960; withdrawn from Eastleigh in August 1998 and now preserved on the Great Central Railway, Loughborough. Chromed cast brass, 8"x5¾", cleaned but unpainted. £400-600 - Sold for £480.

Lot 298 A LNER seat back plate, LEEDS CENTRAL, as used on the concourse of the station. Cast iron, length 46½", the front repainted. An image is provided showing seats with such plates on the concourse; there is no evidence of their use on the main platforms. £800-1000 - Sold for £1250 to commission or postal bidder number 1128.

Lot 299 A worksplate, DUBS, 4257, 1902, from a Natal Government Railway 3ft 6ins gauge 4-10-2T No 203. It became South African Railways Class H No 280 in 1912 and was subsequently rebuilt as a 4-8-2T and re-classified to Class H2. In their original guise these massive tank engines became known as the Reid ten-wheelers after their designer and were used for shunting in many parts of the country. The last in service were retained until 1977. Cast brass, 13½"x5½", in ex loco condition. £250-400 - Sold for £300.

Lot 300 A British Tramways & Carriage Company notice, warning passengers to remain seated when passing under railway bridges, dated 1899. Enamel, 12½"x7½", edge chips in places. £400-600 - Sold for £560.

Lot 301 A Webb and Thompson single line train staff, HELSTON-NANCEGOLLEN CROSSING PLACE, (brass/steel), from the Gwinear Road to Helston branch which closed in 1962 to passengers and freight in 1964. The most southerly section of railway in Great Britain. £250-400 - Sold for £440.

Lot 302 A Tri-ang Railways illuminated advertisement, 21"x15". The device works from a 240v power supply and should be checked by a qualified electrician before a plug is fitted. £150-300 - Sold for £460.

Lot 303 An Evans O'Donnell signal finial with separate castings for top and base, the latter marked E.O.D & Co. Chippenham, L&SW. Cast iron 33¼" tall. Such finials were used on the Barry Railway and are known to have been used on the Somerset and Dorset line at Shapwick. £100-200 - Sold for £210.

Lot 304 A shedplate 52A Gateshead (1949 to June 1965 for steam, May 1988 totally). By the end of the 1950s this shed had a star studded allocation of 90 locos, including 8 A4s, 13 A3s, 14 A1s, 4 A2s, 2 Antelope B1s and 2 named V2s. Cast iron, in ex loco condition. £150-250 - Sold for £260.

Lot 305 A Tyers No.6 single line tablet, BOSCARNE JCN-BODMIN + carrier, (brass/steel), from the Wadebridge to Bodmin branch which closed in 1966. Lot 308 A worksplate, ARMSTRONG WHITWORTH, 1359, 1937, from a LMS Class 5 4-6-0 No 5304 which became BR 45304. Lot 313 A worksplate, HAWTHORN LESLIE, 3308, 1918, together with its numberplate 13, from a standard gauge 0-4-0ST new to British Cyanides Ltd, Oldbury, Staffs with running number 2. Sold in July 1946 to Gas Light & Coke Co, Beckton By-Products Works, Essex where it became No 13. The Works and its locos became part of the North Thames Gas Board in May 1949. Lot 317 A smokebox numberplate, 34019, from the Southern Railway Bulleid light pacific 4-6-2 No 21C119, BIDEFORD, built at Brighton in December 1945, becoming BR 34019, and one of the Class to retain its original streamlined casing to the end. Allocated new to Exmouth Junction, it was soon sent to Ramsgate but returned to Exmouth Junction before moving in 1951 to Nine Elms where it remained for over seven years until transferred to Brighton in 1958 where it spent five years. Withdrawn from Nine Elms on 19 March 1967, it was sold for scrap to Cashmores at Newport who took it on 11 September 1967. The front repainted, the back marked with the BR(S) Eastleigh triangle. £2000-3000 - Sold for £3500.

Lot 320 A nameplate, SIR VALENCE, with KING ARTHUR CLASS appendage below, from the Southern Railway N15 King Arthur Class 4-6-0 No 767, later BR 30767, built by the North British Locomotive Co, Works No 23213, in June 1925. Those of the class built by NBL were generally known as the Scotch Arthurs. It was originally intended to name this engine Sir Modred but this was changed when Eastleigh realised that in Arthurian legend he was the traitor responsible for the eventual destruction of the Court of King Arthur. Allocated to Dover by January 1948, it was transferred to Stewarts Lane in June 1951 where it spent eight years, moving at the very end to Eastleigh from where it was withdrawn in the week ending 27 June 1959 and cut up at Eastleigh Works in the week ending 12 September 1959. Lot 329 A worksplate, LONDON NORTH EASTERN RAILWAY, 2018, DONCASTER, 1948, from the Peppercorn A2 Class 4-6-2 numbered when new 527, with the regional E prefix before the number, later 60527, built in January 1948 and named SUN CHARIOT after the filly owned by the National Stud which won the 1942 triple crown of St Leger, Oaks and 1000 Guineas. Allocated new to Gateshead on 30 January 1948, it moved the following year to Dundee Tay Bridge where it spent eleven years before late spells at Perth, Aberdeen Ferryhill and Polmadie from where it was withdrawn on 24 April 1965 and sold for scrap to Motherwell Machinery & Scrap at Wishaw. Fully engraved brass, 13½"x7¾", in ex loco condition, the back stamped 527, with green paint to the rim and areas of bright yellow paint, evidence of a diagonal stripe to the cab, probably applied during its time at Polmadie. £3000-4000 - Sold for £2600.

Lot 334 A massive, early 20th century, 30", roundhead fusee clock supplied to the Midland Railway by Potts of Leeds and used in the circulating area at Morecambe Promenade which was rebuilt and reopened in 1907, a likely date for the clock. Overall height: 36¾" inches. Case entirely of solid pine, originally painted. Dovetailed box with two side doors and bottom door; all probably replaced, hanging plate replaced. Dial surround of standard sectional construction, permanently fixed to the box and not glazed. The vitreous enamel dial with minor repairs, written Potts & Sons, Leeds. Minute hand counterbalanced and with repairs; both hands ribbed. Substantial chain fusee movement between tapered plates supported on a seat board. Complete with replaced pendulum and cranked winder. £800-1200 - Sold for £1100 to commission or postal bidder number 3094.

Lot 335 A worksplate, BR-E, 60811, DARLINGTON, 1937, from a LNER V2 Class 2-6-2 No 4782 built at Doncaster in September 1937, renumbered 711 in 1946 and then 811 later the same year, becoming BR 60811. Allocated to Gateshead by January 1948 and later Heaton and Tweedmouth, returning to Heaton in April 1953 where it remained until withdrawal on 23 April 1962. It was cut up at Darlington Works. Cast brass, 9"x5", the front repainted. £400-500 - Sold for £400.

Allocated to Frodingham by January 1948 and later Langwith Junction, Doncaster for eleven years and Grantham from where it was withdrawn on 3 September 1963 and sold for scrap to William Rigley & Sons of Bulwell Forest. Lot 344 A nameplate, DEFIANCE, from the LMS Jubilee Class 4-6-0 No 5728, later BR 45728, built at Crewe in 1936 and named on 7 October 1936 after a Royal Navy vessel used at the time as a torpedo training school at Devonport. Allocated new to Willesden on 7 October 1936, it was at Perth by July 1937 and moved in March 1940 to Kingmoor where it spent most of its working life with brief stays towards the end at Upperby and Agecroft from where it was withdrawn on 15 October 1962 and cut up at Cowlairs Works. Cast brass, 29" long. £8000-10000 - Sold for £7500.

Lot 345 A South African Railways cabside numberplate, 1216, 8W, from a Cape Government Railway 3ft 6ins gauge 8th Class 4-8-0 built by Neilson Reid, Works No 6331, in 1903. It became SAR Class 8D No 1216 in 1912. The W suffix was added to the class designation when it was later fitted with a superheated boiler and inside admission piston valves. All were withdrawn by 1972. Cast brass, 19¾"x14", the front repainted. £350-500 - Sold for £300.

Lot 346 A BR(Sc) totem sign, ELGIN, (f/f) from the Inverness to Aberdeen route. The GNSR and Highland stations had totems, the former closing in 1968. Several face chips restored and blemishes to the enamel in places. £500-800 - Sold for £780 to commission or postal bidder number 8505.

Lot 347 A shedplate 87E Landore. A purpose built diesel depot opened in 1963, when locos started carrying these alloy plates. Carried by D6603, later 37303. Ex loco condition. £150-200 - Sold for £380.

Lot 348 Late 19th century GWR mahogany 12" drop case clock typical of many supplied by Kays of Worcester. Overall height: 27", moderate ex-station condition with the more recent insertion of a pendulum window into the drop. The Box with incurved base containing a door with standard GWR knob but lacking the normal ball latch closure. Left side with a standard Ivorine number plate marked G.W.R. 2178. Sides made in two parts both now split and base with some veneer repairs. Dial surround of standard sectional construction. Bezel replaced. 12" dial with minor damage & rusting, written G.W.R. with an indistinct shadow in the lower half probably Kays details. Rear of dial marked 2178 A and JK 1078. Hands of standard GWR broad design. Chain fusee movement between shaped plates with feet, stamped 19570 vertically, a common early GWR workshop reference. Complete with pendulum (rod replaced) and winder. £800-1200 - Sold for £800 to commission or postal bidder number 2681.

Lot 349 A worksplate, YORKSHIRE ENGINE Co, 2474, 1949, from a 0-4-0ST new to the National Coal Board at Wombwell Main Colliery, Wombwell, Yorkshire West Riding, named YORK No 1. Later worked at several other collieries in the area, ending up at South Kirkby. Sold September 1975 to the Yorkshire Dales Railway, Embsay, North Yorkshire for preservation where it still resides. Lot 353 A Tyers No.6 single line tablet, EGGESFORD-SOUTH MOLTON ROAD, (fibre) from the Exeter to Barnstaple Junction route. South Molton Road was renamed Kings Nympton in 1951 at which time the tablets would have been re-engraved: shortly after the five single line sections between Copplestone and Umberleigh were equipped with key token equipment for single line working. A rare survivor. £250-400 - Sold for £780.

Lot 354 A shedplate 66D Greenock Ladyburn (1949 to November 1966). This ex CR shed, formerly 27B from 1935 to 1949, was home to 40 locos throughout the 1950s. By 1965 this number had dwindled to just 12. Ex loco condition. £150-300 - Sold for £200.

Lot 355 A worksplate, LMS BUILT 1944, GWR. Stanier LMS Class 8F 2-8-0s built to Railway Executive Committee order by the GWR at Swindon in 1944 were Nos 8427-62 which became BR 48427-62. Cast brass, 10½"x6", in ex loco condition. £100-200 - Sold for £210.

Lot 356 A shedplate 40B Immingham (1949 to February 1966 for steam). The ex GCR shed housed over 120 locos in the 1950s being noted for its GCR D11 4-4-0s. Lot 363 A smokebox numberplate, 31739, from a South Eastern & Chatham Railway D Class 4-4-0 No 739 built at Ashford in January 1902 and rebuilt by the Southern Railway at Ashford in April 1927, re-classified to D1 Class and renumbered A739, later 1739, becoming BR 31739. Allocated to Faversham by January 1948, it had brief spells at Stewarts Lane, Tonbridge and Redhill before moving in June 1953 to Bricklayers Arms from where it was withdrawn in the week ending 11 November 1961 and cut up at Ashford Works in the week ending 13 January 1962. Its BR sheds were Colwick, Staveley GC, Grimesthorpe and Langwith Junction from where it was withdrawn on 16 January 1966 and cut up by Drapers at Hull in the week ending 14 May 1966. Lot 382 A nameplate, CEFNTILLA COURT, from the GWR 2900 Saint Class 4-6-0 No 2936 built at Swindon in November 1911 and named after the neo-Tudor mansion ten miles from Abergavenny, formerly the home of Lord Raglan. Allocated by January 1948 to Ebbw Junction from where it was withdrawn on 26 April 1951 and cut up at Swindon Works in the four weeks ending 16 June 1951. Lot 386 A worksplate, NORTH BRITISH LOCOMOTIVE Co, HYDE PARK WORKS, 24743, 1942, from a LMS Stanier type 8F 2-8-0 built in February 1942 to Ministry of Supply order for the War Department, WD No 550. Loaned new to the LMS in May 1942, it returned to the WD in July 1943 and was sold to the LMS the following November, LMS No 8265, becoming BR 48265. Allocated to Derby following its sale to the LMS, its later sheds included Coalville, Wellingborough, Royston, Mirfield and Wakefield from where it was withdrawn on 8 June 1967 and taken for scrap by Cashmores at Great Bridge on 13 October 1967. Lot 397 A cabside numberplate, SOUTHERN RAILWAY, A890, from a loco built by the SR at Ashford and ex-works 1st December 1925 as Class K1 2-6-4 tank locomotive numbered A890 with the name RIVER FROME. Based on Maunsell's 3-cylinder N1 class mogul, but with side tanks and a bunker in place of the tender and 6ft coupled wheels, together with a trailing bogie. As with the 2-cylinder K class tanks it was withdrawn from service over concerns regarding stability when running at speed and the fatal derailment at Sevenoaks in August 1927. A890 was subsequently rebuilt in 1928 as an unnamed 3-cylinder 2-6-0, the first of the U1 class. Cast brass, 13½"x7½", in ex loco condition. £900-1200 - Sold for £2700.

Lot 416 A nameplate, LORD RODNEY, from the Southern Railway LN Class Lord Nelson 4-6-0 No 863, BR 30863, built at Eastleigh in October 1929 and named after the 1st Baron Rodney (1718-1792), the English Admiral best known for his commands in the American War of Independence. A long time Bournemouth engine, it moved in 1956 to Eastleigh from where it was withdrawn in the week ending 10 February 1962 and cut up at Ashford Works by 24 February. £6000-9000 - Sold for £6100.

Lot 417 A LMS double royal poster, ISLE OF MAN, FOR HOLIDAYS, Three routes to Douglas, by Norman Wilkinson, 1878-1971. A view of the steamer, Lady of Man, issued in 1939. Laid down to conserve, a small area of restoration at the top. (3000-13-3-39) £200-350 - Sold for £210.

Lot 418 A shedplate,71G Bath Green Park (1948 to February 1958) then Weymouth (February 1958 to September 1963), with matching SC plate. The ex S&D shed in Bath was home to over 50 locos including the famous S&D 2-8-0s. Transferred to the WR, becoming 82F, it exchanged codes with ex GWR Weymouth shed, whose 20 GWR locos now sported the SR code! In September 1963 the depot received SR locos and was recoded 70G. Allocated to Oxley by January 1948 and later Stafford Road, Pontypool Road, Taunton, St Philips Marsh and Swindon from where it was withdrawn on 28 December 1963 and taken for scrap by Cashmores at Great Bridge on 17 June 1964. Lot 425 A Southern Railway target sign, KEW GARDENS, from the Richmond to Hammersmith route which became part of the District Line. Lot 426 A worksplate, LMS, BUILT 1932, CREWE, from a LMS Class 2P 4-4-0 No 698 which became BR 40698. Lot 431 A shedplate 70D Basingstoke (1950 to September 1963) then Eastleigh (closed to steam July 1967). The ex LSWR shed at Basingstoke was most noted for being home to the Remembrance class 4-6-0s in its small allocation in the 1950s. Eastleigh, also ex LSWR, took over the code when Basingstoke lost its allocation. Basingstoke however remained open for servicing until the end of SR steam. Eastleigh’s allocation of 100 locos contained no fewer than 36 Bullied Light Pacifics during this period. A SC plate accompanies this lot. Lot 435 A worksplate, LMS BUILT 1914, HORWICH, from a Lancashire & Yorkshire Railway 1546 Class 0-8-0 No 1583 built at Horwich in January 1914. It became LMS No 12877 and was allocated the BR number 52877 but was withdrawn from Aintree in the week ending 2 October 1948 without having acquired this number. It was scrapped at Horwich Works on 18 December 1948 and the vendor obtained this plate from the person who removed it from the engine. Cast brass, 10½"x6", the front repainted, a vertical crack at the top centre repaired. £100-200 - Sold for £540.

Lot 436 A Canadian Pacific Railway 20th century Napoleon Hat style German striking mantle clock. Overall height: 11¾". Mahogany case with mixed wood inlay on bun feet with back door and bezel both secured by press latches. 5½" silvered convex dial written Canadian Pacific Railways, Wate Street, Liverpool. Two train going barrel movement stamped with B within an extended crescent indicating the makers Badische Uhrenfabrik Gmbh, striking the hours and halves on a gong. Complete with pendulum and winding key. £200-300 - Sold for £580.

Lot 441 A South Eastern Railway guards cap badge, a pattern issued briefly in June 1897 in connection with the Queen's Jubilee celebrations and used solely by Guards on the special trains between Dover and London conveying foreign royalty and dignitaries attending the celebrations in London. Lot 459 A worksplate, LONDON & NORTH EASTERN RAILWAY, 63439, ARMSTRONG WHITWORTH, 1920, from a North Eastern Railway Class T2, LNER Q6 Class, 0-6-0 No 2282 built by Armstrong Whitworth, Works No 30, in June 1920, renumbered 3439 in 1946, becoming BR 63439. A long time Consett engine, it was withdrawn from there on 7 April 1964 and sold for scrap to Arnott Young at Fighting Cocks. Cast brass, 9"x5", cleaned and the front repainted. £300-500 - Sold for £520.

Lot 460 A London & North Western Railway 3 aspect handlamp, the side stamped LNWR BLETCHLEY P.WAY. Original condition; the top cover requires soldering. £100-200 - Sold for £80.

Lot 461 A South African Railways cabside numberplate, 1557, 4AR, from a SAR 3ft 6ins gauge 4-8-2 built by the North British Locomotive Co, Works No 20231, in 1913. The Class 4A locos were an improved version of the Cape Government Railways Class 4 built by NBL in 1911. All were withdrawn from the Reef, where they had spent most of their working lives performing a wide variety of duties, in 1974. Cast brass, 19¾"x14", in ex loco condition. £350-500 - Sold for £300.

Lot 463 A shedplate 12A Carlisle Kingmoor (1935 to 1949 and February 1958 to January 1968), also Carlisle Upperby (1950 to February 1958). The ex CR shed at Kingmoor used this code twice. During its second spell as a LMR shed it had 120 locos allocated. Patriots, Royal Scots, Princess Royals, Coronations, Clans, and no fewer than 51 out of 55 Britannias were allocated here during this period. Ex LNWR shed Carlisle Upperby had around 80 locos in the 1950s, and it too had a star studded cast of Patriots, Jubilees, Royal Scots and Coronations. Lot 464 A Furness Railway Company bridge weight notice, titled Motor Car Act 1896 & 1903, signed Barrow in Furness, 1908. A unique variation in shape to the standard style bridge diamond, and somewhat lighter. Cast iron, 38½"x21", in original condition. £300-500 - Sold for £780.

Lot 467 A worksplate, BEYER PEACOCK, 6686, 1931, from a GWR 5700 Class 0-6-0PT built in March 1931. Allocated to Llanelly by January 1948 and then Swansea Paxton Street, before returning to Llanelly from where it was withdrawn on 4 July 1961 and cut up at Swindon Works in the week ending 2 December 1961. Lot 478 A smokebox numberplate, 61291, from a LNER B1 Class 4-6-0 No E1291, the E prefix denoting the regional allocation, later 61291, built by the North British Locomotive Co, Works No 26192 in February 1948. Allocated new to Darlington on 24 February 1948 and later Borough Gardens, York North and Ardsley from where it was withdrawn on 20 May 1965 and sold for scrap to Ellis Metals at Swalwell. Lot 480 A Great Central Railway small three aspect sliding knob handlamp, complete with its original G.C.R. stamped vessel. Fine original condition, the location overpainted and replaced by C.R. Muncy, Inspector, Kings Cross goods, on the other side. It is likely the inspector took his lamp with him when he transferred. £100-200 - Sold for £280.

Lot 489 A late 19th century 10" oak-cased roundhead clock supplied to the GNR by Potts of Leeds and used in Connington North Cabin, Holme. Overall height 13" Dovetailed box with two side doors and bottom door lacking its lock. Sectional dial surround containing original spun brass bezel and sight ring. Dial with minor damage written LNER 12102 over shadow of W. Potts & Sons G.N.R. Leeds 8*2. Chain fusee movement between shaped plates with feet. Complete with replaced pendulum, winder and sheet confirming its location. £250-400 - Sold for £720.

Lot 497 A smokebox numberplate, 48276, from a Stanier type War Department 2-8-0 built to Ministry of Supply order by the North British Locomotive Co, Works No 24782, in June 1942, WD No 563. Loaned new to the LMS in July 1942 and allocated to Toton, it returned to the WD in July 1943 and was taken into LMS stock the following December as LMS 8276 and allocated to Holbeck, becoming BR 48276. Its later sheds were Stourton, Low Moor, Mirfield, Wakefield and Royston from where it was withdrawn on 4 November 1967 and despatched for scrap to Cashmores at Great Bridge, entering their yard on 11 April 1968.
