A smokebox numberplate, 31739, from a South Eastern & Chatham Railway D Class 4-4-0 No 739 built at Ashford in January 1902 and rebuilt by the Southern Railway at Ashford in April 1927, re-classified to D1 Class and renumbered A739, later 1739, becoming BR 31739. Allocated to Faversham by January 1948, it had brief spells at Stewarts Lane, Tonbridge and Redhill before moving in June 1953 to Bricklayers Arms from where it was withdrawn in the week ending 11 November 1961 and cut up at Ashford Works in the week ending 13 January 1962. In ex loco condition, a weld repair between the 7 and 3, the letter A cast in the back by the weld. £350-500 |
