A worksplate, LONDON NORTH EASTERN RAILWAY, 2018, DONCASTER, 1948, from the Peppercorn A2 Class 4-6-2 numbered when new 527, with the regional E prefix before the number, later 60527, built in January 1948 and named SUN CHARIOT after the filly owned by the National Stud which won the 1942 triple crown of St Leger, Oaks and 1000 Guineas. Allocated new to Gateshead on 30 January 1948, it moved the following year to Dundee Tay Bridge where it spent eleven years before late spells at Perth, Aberdeen Ferryhill and Polmadie from where it was withdrawn on 24 April 1965 and sold for scrap to Motherwell Machinery & Scrap at Wishaw. Fully engraved brass, 13½"x7¾", in ex loco condition, the back stamped 527, with green paint to the rim and areas of bright yellow paint, evidence of a diagonal stripe to the cab, probably applied during its time at Polmadie. £3000-4000 |
