Lot 198 |
An exceptionally large, mid-19th century, 24", teak-cased, wall-hanging LC&DR longcase regulator clock of standard design from Dover Marine and latterly Tattenham Corner. Overall height 90 inches. Case in ex-station condition except both doors cleaned. Trunk with plinth supported by well carved ears, full length trunk door secured by a replaced lock and chisel base. Forward sliding pedimented hood secured by an internal turn, with glazed door containing cast brass sight ring; lock present but door now secured by a latch. Inside of trunk door stamped 1034 SE and with standard SECR brass number plate marked 1034. Backboard, lacking two peripheral wooden sections at top, also stamped 1034 S.E. Substantial, weight-driven, wire-line, six-pillar deadbeat regulator movement with Harrison’s maintaining power. 24" dial repainted and written with the standard BR(S)/ John Walker details and numbered 1034 SE. Rear of dial marked 1034 SE, Tattenham Corner and TC. Hands of unpainted brass, one with a well-executed repair; both counterbalanced in the movement. SR records show it was originally used on the Down Platform at Dover Harbour opened in the 1860s, a likely date for this clock, and was moved (presumably after the closure of this station in 1927) to Tattenham Corner which was fully reopened in 1928. There it was used in the Circulating Area where it would have been viewed by Derby crowds. Complete with wood-rod pendulum with 6" brass cased lenticular bob, 15 lb. lead weight £2000-3000 |
