Auction Catalogue: Great Central Railwayana, 3 June 2017
Lot 320 |
A nameplate, SIR VALENCE, with KING ARTHUR CLASS appendage below, from the Southern Railway N15 King Arthur Class 4-6-0 No 767, later BR 30767, built by the North British Locomotive Co, Works No 23213, in June 1925. Those of the class built by NBL were generally known as the Scotch Arthurs. It was originally intended to name this engine Sir Modred but this was changed when Eastleigh realised that in Arthurian legend he was the traitor responsible for the eventual destruction of the Court of King Arthur. Allocated to Dover by January 1948, it was transferred to Stewarts Lane in June 1951 where it spent eight years, moving at the very end to Eastleigh from where it was withdrawn in the week ending 27 June 1959 and cut up at Eastleigh Works in the week ending 12 September 1959. Cast brass, length 39½", the front repainted, otherwise original condition; the back stamped 767. £7000-9000 |
