Auction Catalogue: Great Central Railwayana, 3 June 2017
Lot 397 |
A cabside numberplate, SOUTHERN RAILWAY, A890, from a loco built by the SR at Ashford and ex-works 1st December 1925 as Class K1 2-6-4 tank locomotive numbered A890 with the name RIVER FROME. Based on Maunsell's 3-cylinder N1 class mogul, but with side tanks and a bunker in place of the tender and 6ft coupled wheels, together with a trailing bogie. As with the 2-cylinder K class tanks it was withdrawn from service over concerns regarding stability when running at speed and the fatal derailment at Sevenoaks in August 1927. A890 was subsequently rebuilt in 1928 as an unnamed 3-cylinder 2-6-0, the first of the U1 class. Cast brass, 13½"x7½", in ex loco condition. £900-1200 |
| This lot sold for £2700. |
