Lot 1 A LNER & LMS timetable header from the Great Northern and London & North Western Joint Line, as displayed over the small LNER style train departure posters. Enamel, 14"x2¾", a small chip between the L and E. £150-300 - Sold for £200.00.

Lot 2 A Great Western Railway Hotels egg cup. Height 2½", a hairline crack to the rim on the left, away from the company emblem. £80-120 - Sold for £100 to commission or postal bidder number 7541.

Lot 3 A worksplate, MIDLAND RAILWAY, 1922, DERBY. Locos built by the MR at Derby in the Company's final year were 483 Class 4-4-0 numbered between 370 and 480, most of which survived into BR service numbered in the 403XX and 404XX series, 1533 Class 0-4-0T Nos 1535-37, all of which survived into BR service numbered 41535-7, and 3987 Class 0-6-0 Nos 4014-26, all of which survived into BR service numbered 44014-26. £300-500 - Sold for £740.

Lot 4 An advertising sign, COOPERS SHEEP DIPPING POWDER, The King of Dips. Enamel, 20"x30", edge chips in the black border repainted, the face excellent. £400-600 - Sold for £400.

Lot 5 A shedplate 87B Duffryn Yard (1949 to March 1964). This ex PTR shed had an allocation of 60 locos throughout the 1950s. Ex loco condition. £100-200 - Sold for £280.00 to commission or postal bidder number 2506.

Lot 6 A Railway Signal Company single line gangers key, EARDISLEY JUNC-MOORHAMPTON, (brass head/steel shaft), the reverse inscribed GANGERS TOKEN TO BE USED ONLY FOR KEY OCCUPATION. A section on the Hereford to Hay-on-Wye and Three Cocks route closed in 1962. £200-350 - Sold for £560.

Lot 7 A GWR quad royal poster, SPEED TO THE WEST, by Charles H.J. Mayo, a classic image. Laid down to conserve. £800-1200 - Sold for £1450 to commission or postal bidder number 1695.

Lot 8 A small carriage board, HIRWAUN-MERTHYR, used on the route to Neath which closed in 1964. Wood, 32" long, a repair at one corner, otherwise in fine original condition. £150-300 - Sold for £230.

Lot 9 A Southern Railway block gong with enamel plate, LEWES JUNCTION. The box was east of Lewes on the route to Newhaven and Eastbourne. £150-300 - Sold for £230 to commission or postal bidder number 4555.

Lot 10 A single line key token, ABERMULE-NEWTOWN, (cast steel, engraved metal plate) from the Welshpool to Moat Lane section of the Cambrian Railways route through Mid Wales. £150-300 - Sold for £420.

Lot 11 A worksplate, BEYER PEACOCK (HYMEK) 7975, 1963, from Class 35 D7071. New to Bristol Bath Road in March 1963; withdrawn from Old Oak Common in January 1972 and cut up at Swindon Works in September 1972. Cast aluminium, 12¾"5¼", the front repainted. £300-500 - Sold for £520.

Lot 12 A GWR door plate, STATION MASTER. Cast iron, 24"x3½", in fine original condition. £100-200 - Sold for £290.00.

Lot 13 A smokebox numberplate, 2268, from a GWR 2251 Class 0-6-0 built at Swindon in June 1930. Allocated to Taunton by January 1948 and later Westbury and Machynlleth from where it was withdrawn in the week ending 22 May 1965 and sold for scrap the following 20 July to Birds Commercial Motors at Morriston. Ex loco condition. £300-500 - Sold for £1350.

Lot 14 A LNER seat back plate, ENFIELD CHASE, a station on the Hertford Loop. Cast iron, 40" long, the front repainted. £250-400 - Sold for £440.

Lot 15 A Great North of Scotland Railway silver plated tea pot by Elkington, 4½" tall, the side marked with the GNSR PALACE HOTEL garter. £150-300 - Sold for £200 to commission or postal bidder number 7541.

Lot 16 A Tyers No 6 single line tablet, GUNTON-NEWSTEAD LANE, (fibre) from the Norwich to Cromer route. £100-200 - Sold for £170.

Lot 17 A worksplate, NORTH BRITISH LOCOMOTIVE Co, HYDE PARK WORKS, No 23261, 1925, from a LMS Class 4F 0-6-0 No 4064 which became BR 44064. At Willesden by January 1935, its later sheds included Edge Hill, Stoke, Crewe South, Workington, Brunswick, Rugby and Stoke from where it was withdrawn on 25 November 1959 and, following a period in store at Uttoxeter, despatched for scrap to Cashmores at Great Bridge on 15 June 1961. Cast brass, 8" diameter, in ex loco condition. £150-300 - Sold for £380.00 to commission or postal bidder number 4815.

Lot 18 A North Eastern Railway doorplate, LADIES ROOM, FIRST CLASS. Enamel, 20"x5¼", chipping restored to the upper right end, the wording unaffected. £150-300 - Sold for £300.

Lot 19 A station stamp, PARTRIDGE GREEN STATION, LB&SCRy, from the Christ's Hospital to Shoreham route which closed in 1966. Wooden handle with brass head, 3½" high. £100-200 - Sold for £340 to commission or postal bidder number 4951.

Lot 20 A BR(NE) totem sign, MORLEY TOP, (flangeless) from the Wakefield to Bradford route. The station closed in 1961. Face chips neatly restored, otherwise excellent. £1000-1500 - Sold for £1050.

Lot 21 A North Eastern Railway presentation shield for the Ladies Swimming Club Championship, featuring an engraved scene of the ladies in and around the pool, overall size 14"x18". £80-120 - Sold for £20.

Lot 22 A worksplate, BRCW DEL 174 1961, from Class 33 D6570, later 33052. New to Hither Green in September 1961; the loco was named ASHFORD at the station of the same name in May 1980. The plates were removed in September 1996 and the loco was cut up at Stewarts Lane by MRJ Phillips in January 1997. Cast brass, 4"x3", in original condition as fitted in the loco cab. £150-300 - Sold for £340.

Lot 23 A GWR signal lever plate, 24, CARDIFF GENERAL DOWN LINE/SOUTH SIDINGS, engraved brass, length 6", together with a trafolite plate, 20 CARDIFF GENERAL DOWN LINE/EXCHANGE SIDINGS. (2) £200-350 - Sold for £480.

Lot 24 A station direction sign, LMS STATION, TAYNUILT, (flangeless, double sided) from the Callander and Oban line. Enamel 24¾"x 9¾", a few chips neatly repaired. £300-500 - Sold for £960.

Lot 25 A BR(Sc) double royal poster, LOCH AWE, ARGYLL, by Gilfillan, d 1961; restoration of lower left edge, laid down to conserve. £150-300 - Sold for £340.

Lot 26 A nameplate, SWIFTSURE, from a LMS Class 6P Jubilee 4-6-0 No 5716, BR 45716, built at Crewe in 1936 and named on 4 July 1936 after a Royal Navy vessel built the same year. Allocated new on loan to Crewe North on 4 July 1936, it spent most of its working life at Carlisle Kingmoor before moving towards the end to Agecroft, Newton Heath and Holbeck from where it was withdrawn on 7 September 1964 and soon cut up at Crewe Works by 25 September. Cast brass, 28¾" long, the front repainted. £7000-9000 - Sold for £10500 to commission or postal bidder number 8283.

Lot 27 A Metropolitan Railway, Beware of Trains notice. Cast iron, 14¼"x11¼", in fine original condition. £200-350 - Sold for £780.

Lot 28 A BR(S) totem sign, MINSTER, THANET, (f/f) from the Canterbury to Ramsgate route. One small face chip restored on the second T. £300-500 - Sold for £290.

Lot 29 A GWR signal box shelf plate, ROWINGTON JUNC. The box was north of Hatton on the Leamington to Birmingham main line, junction for the original route to Henley-in-Arden, closed in 1917. Engraved brass, 4¾"x1½". £100-200 - Sold for £180.

Lot 30 A LNER quad royal poster, EAST COAST, Whitby & Sandsend, by Frank Henry Algernon Mason, 1875-1965, a dramatic view of the coast at Whitby, the moors beyond. Laid down to conserve. £500-800 - Sold for £1650.00 to commission or postal bidder number 1999.

Lot 31 A London Brighton & South Coast Railway Sykes banner repeater, 4" diameter. Brass cased, the original face marked W.R.Sykes, LB&SCR 1856. £200-350 - Sold for £1150.

Lot 32 A shedplate 88D Merthyr (1949 to November 1964), then Rhymney (November 1964 to April 1965). The ex GWR shed at Merthyr had 55 locos in the 1950s. The ex RR shed at Rhymney had an allocation of 19 56xx 0-6-2T during its short time as a coded depot. The front repainted. £100-200 - Sold for £180.

Lot 33 A large GWR Hotels silver plated tea pot by Walker and Hall, 7" tall. £100-200 - Sold for £380.

Lot 34 A GWR cabside numberplate, 2845, from a 2800 Class 2-8-0 built at Swindon in November 1912. Allocated to Old Oak Common by January 1948, its later sheds included Reading, Southall, St Philips Marsh, Ebbw Junction, Pontypool Road and Banbury from where it was withdrawn on 24 May 1963 and taken for scrap by Cashmores at Great Bridge on 13 December 1963. Cast brass, the front repainted. £800-1200 - Sold for £1200.

Lot 35 A single line key token, ROGART-GOLSPIE, (brass) from the Far North Line to Wick and Thurso. A rare example as these keys were re-engraved following the closure of Golspie signal box. £150-300 - Sold for £660 to commission or postal bidder number 1380.

Lot 36 A GWR pre-grouping doorplate, GUARDS. Cast iron, 17¾"x3½", the front repainted. £100-200 - Sold for £380.

Lot 37 A smokebox numberplate, 63453, from a North Eastern Railway Class T2, LNER Q6 Class, 0-6-0 No 2296 built by Armstrong Whitworth, Works No 44, in December 1920. It was renumbered 3453 in 1946 and became BR 63453. At Newport NER by January 1948, its later sheds included Selby, Blaydon and Tyne Dock from where it was withdrawn on 2 October 1966 and cut up by Drapers at Hull in the week ending 17 December 1966. Ex loco condition but with a weld repair. £300-500 - Sold for £200.

Lot 38 A LMS double royal poster, FLEETWOOD, by W.E.N. McCorquodale Studio, a classic 1930s image, laid down to conserve. £600-900 - Sold for £780.

Lot 39 A worksplate, KITSON & Co, 1899 (no number). Regrettably the origin of this plate has been lost but in 1899 Kitson supplied locomotives to the Cardiff Railway, the Lancashire, Derbyshire & East Coast Railway, the Midland Railway, the Midland & Great Northern Railway, India and Ireland as well as certain UK industrial concerns. Engraved brass, 6¼"x3¾", the front lightly polished. £400-600 - Sold for £560.

Lot 40 A London Brighton & South Coast Railway Harpers semaphore block instrument, in fine original condition. £400-600 - Sold for £2200.

Lot 41 A smokebox numberplate, 48352, from a LMS Class 8F 2-8-0 No 8352 built at Horwich and allocated new to Normanton on 26 May 1944. Its later sheds were Wakefield, Mirfield, Stourton and Royston from where it was withdrawn on 4 November 1967 and despatched for scrap to Cashmores at Great Bridge on 13 April 1968. Ex loco condition. £300-500 - Sold for £760.

Lot 42 A signal box nameboard, WARKWORTH, from the Morpeth to Alnmouth section of the East Coast main line, the station closing in 1958. Cast letters on wood, 50" long with beading (a little loss to the end beading). £150-300 - Sold for £840.

Lot 43 An advertising sign, SPRATTS. Enamel (flanged), 20"x4", a small face chip repainted to the right. £200-350 - Sold for £400 to commission or postal bidder number 2144.

Lot 44 A GWR safety valve bonnet from a Pannier Tank locomotive. Brass, 21" high with a plate glass inset for the top so as to be used as a coffee table. £350-500 - Sold for £260.

Lot 45 A Great Eastern Railway signal box instrument plate, MAGDALEN ROAD, a box on the Ely to Kings Lynn route. Engraved brass, 8¼" long. £100-200 - Sold for £130.00 to commission or postal bidder number 541.

Lot 46 A BR(W) totem sign, ACOCKS GREEN & SOUTH YARDLEY, (f/f), from the Leamington to Birmingham main line. Loss of shine and a couple of face chips repainted. £250-400 - Sold for £710.

Lot 47 A BR standard class tritone chime whistle, from a Britannia class locomotive. Cast brass, 15½" tall, complete with square base plate, fulcrum and feed pipe fittings, in ex loco condition. £600-900 - Sold for £4700.

Lot 48 A ceremonial trowel inscribed to Sir Harry Mainwaring, Vice Chairman of the Cheshire Quarter Sessions, Chairman of the CHESHIRE MIDLAND RAILWAY, on laying the foundation stone of the KNUTSFORD GRANDSTAND, March 6th 1865. Silver plate, ivory handle, 11½" long. £150-300 - Sold for £100.

Lot 49 A London & South Western Railway pull bar platform ticket machine, with its original enamel plate, makers plate and key. Original condition and in working order with a supply of old pennies to operate. £2000-3000 - Sold for £6100.

Lot 50 A LNER double royal poster, ULLSWATER, ENGLISH LAKELANDS, via Darlington and Penrith, by Ernest William Haslehurst, 1866-1949. Laid down to conserve. £200-350 - Sold for £290.

Lot 51 A worksplate, ALCO, 71740, SCHENECTADY, 1944, from a Russian 5ft gauge 2-10-0, SZD No Ea 2071, one of a batch of two hundred locos supplied by ALCO to the Soviet Union during WW2. Cast iron, 14"x7½", the front repainted. £200-350 - Sold for £180.

Lot 52 A LNER seat back plate, KIRKHAM ABBEY. The station was on the York to Scarborough route and closed to passengers in 1930. Cast iron, 45" long, in original condition. £400-600 - Sold for £840.

Lot 53 A BR(Sc) double royal poster, ISLAND OF ARRAN, BRODICK BAY, by Jack Merriott, 1901-1968. (B18542) £150-300 - Sold for £260 to commission or postal bidder number 7355.

Lot 54 A depot plaque for CREWE DIESEL DEPOT depicting a Cheshire Cat. Cast aluminium 17¾" square, in ex loco condition. £200-350 - Sold for £200 to commission or postal bidder number 4295.

Lot 55 A carriage print, EYNSFORD, KENT, by Alan Gray, from the Southern Region B series. £80-120 - Sold for £150.

Lot 57 A BR(W) sign, BEWARE OF THE TRAINS, (f/f). Enamel, 24"x18", minor edge chips, blemishes to the face. £100-200 - Sold for £320.

Lot 58 A Tyers No 6 single line tablet, LAUNCESTON-EGLOSKERRY, (brass/steel), from the North Cornwall Line between Okehampton and Padstow, which closed in 1966. The face stamped, Not in Use, as was the practice at Exeter S&T Depot when withdrawn tablets were sold. £150-300 - Sold for £300 to commission or postal bidder number 3794.

Lot 59 A Hull & Barnsley Railway wagon plate, H & BR, 226, 7 TONS. Cast iron, 9"x5½", repainted. £100-200 - Sold for £230 to commission or postal bidder number 1972.

Lot 60 A BR(S) double royal poster, WORTHING, by Kenneth Bromfield, minor edge blemishes restored, laid down to conserve. (AD7283. 57/58) £150-300 - Sold for £140.

Lot 61 A worksplate, LONDON & NORTH EASTERN RAILWAY, 8117, COWLAIRS WORKS, 1897, from a North British Railway Class G 0-4-0ST No 63 built at Cowlairs in December 1897. It became LNER Y9 Class No 9063 and was renumbered 8117 in 1946, becoming BR 68117. It was allocated to Kipps throughout its BR days but spent numerous periods on hire to various industrial concerns in central Scotland. Following withdrawal from Kipps on 16 July 1962, it was cut up at Cowlairs Works. Cast brass, 9"x5", the front cleaned and repainted. £150-300 - Sold for £190.

Lot 62 A Great Western Railway ashtray, GWR, WREXHAM PILSNER LAGER, by Royal Doulton, china, 4" diameter. £80-120 - Sold for £190.

Lot 63 A GWR cabside numberplate, 1013, from 1000 County Class 4-6-0, COUNTY OF DORSET, built at Swindon in February 1946 and named in January 1947. At Bristol Bath Road by January 1948, it spent most of its BR days at Shrewsbury with spells at Laira, Truro, Penzance, Stafford Road and Swindon from where it was withdrawn in the week ending 18 July 1964 and sold for scrap to Cashmores at Newport on 4 September 1964. Cast brass, in ex loco condition. £2500-3000 - Sold for £1850.

Lot 64 A Midland Railway notice to engine drivers crossing the weighbridge, dated Derby 1910. The sign relates to the weighing of engines at the works. Cast iron, 34"x19", the front repainted. £100-200 - Sold for £230.

Lot 65 A worksplate, ROBERT STEPHENSON & HAWTHORNS, 7530, 1950, from a (LNER) L1 Class 2-6-4T No 67796. Allocated new to Kings Cross on 16 August 1950 and later Neasden, Colwick, Gorton, New England and Grantham from where it was withdrawn on 6 November 1962 and cut up at Darlington Works. Engraved brass, 11½"x5½", the front lightly polished. £250-400 - Sold for £440.

Lot 66 A signal box nameboard, ENTHORPE, from the Driffield to Selby route. The station closed in 1954, the whole route in 1965. Cast letters on wood, 45" long, repainted. £200-350 - Sold for £390.

Lot 67 A worksplate, BUILT 1953 BRIGHTON. The only locos built by BR at Brighton in 1953 were BR Standard Class 4 2-6-4T Nos 80059-76. Cast iron, 10½"x6", in ex loco condition. £150-300 - Sold for £380.

Lot 68 An underground double royal poster, EDGWARE, by Walter E. Spradbery, 1889-1969. Laid down on linen. (1207.1000.22.7.24) £150-300 - Sold for £300.

Lot 69 A nameplate, IRON DUKE, from the BR Standard Class 7 Britannia 4-6-2 No 70014 built at Crewe and taking its name from the nickname of the 1st Duke of Wellington. Allocated new to Norwich on 2 June 1951 and later Stewarts Lane, where it regularly worked the Golden Arrow express, Trafford Park, Neasden, Annesley, Llandudno Junction, Willesden, Crewe North and South and Carlisle Kingmoor from where it was withdrawn on 30 December 1967 and despatched for scrap to T.W. Ward at Inverkeithing on 12 March 1968. Cast brass, 34½" long, the front repainted. The engine record card for the loco is in the March Postal Auction. £10000-12000 - Sold for £15500.

Lot 70 A Midland Railway Hotels silver plated coffee pot by Elkington, an elegant design, 8½" tall. £100-200 - Sold for £340.

Lot 71 A worksplate, ENGLISH ELECTRIC/VF 3113/D663 1961, from Class 40 D367, later 40167. New to Haymarket in November 1961; withdrawn from Longsight in February 1984, and cut up at Doncaster Works in May 1984. Chromed cast brass, 10"x4½", the front cleaned and repainted. £400-600 - Sold for £600.

Lot 72 A BR(Sc) totem sign, WEMYSS BAY, (h/f), the terminus of the branch from Greenock. The station a superb example of an original Caledonian Railway terminus; excellent condition. £800-1200 - Sold for £800.

Lot 73 A worksplate, RESITA, 242, 1933, from a standard gauge Roumanian State Railways loco, probably a 4-6-0 licensed copy of the Prussian P8 Class which was Resita's main product at that time. Cast brass, 8¼"x5¼", the front repainted. £150-300 - Sold for £150.

Lot 74 A GWR cabside numberplate, 3180, from a 3150 Class 2-6-2T built at Swindon in November 1907. Allocated to Tyseley by January 1948, it moved in February 1953 to Gloucester WR from where it was withdrawn on 23 October 1957 and cut up at Swindon Works in the four weeks ending 30 November 1957. This left hand side plate was damaged by shrapnel during an air raid at Newton Abbot on 20th August 1940; repairs can be seen in the lower right hand corner. Cast brass, the front repainted. £500-800 - Sold for £2300.

Lot 75 A LNWR three aspect handlamp, the side stamped LANCASTER ENGINEERS, 30378, and plated, PWND, 122F, (Permanent Way, Northern Division). The lamp is in completely original condition, retaining its Carr Dept Wol LNW vessel and LNWR ceramic burner, the top stamped LNWR Wolverton. The blue glass is absent. £150-300 - Sold for £230.

Lot 76 A shedplate 6C Birkenhead Mollington Street (1935 to September 1963), then Croes Newydd (September 1963 to June 1967). This ex GWR/LNWR Joint shed was home to a wide variety of classes in the 1950, including GWR pre grouping 0-6-0 pannier tanks, and Granges as well as the exotic LMS 0-6-0 2F tanks in its total of 100 locos. It became 8H in 1963, when ex GWR shed Croes Newydd, formerly 84J and 89B, took on this code. Its allocation of around 40 locos continued the 6C tradition of housing former GWR, LMS and BR standard classes. Ex loco condition. £100-200 - Sold for £60.

Lot 77 A group of GWR signal lever plates, (a) 22 Gates Unlocked/Locked Across Line 23/wheel, 6¾"; (b) 23, Gates Locked Across Road/Unlocked, 5½", both from Dolcoath Sidings Box, east of Camborne; (c) Down Main Detonators, ex Bodmin Road, 3"x5"; also (d) 19 Down Main Distant, 6", and (e) 124, Down Main Inner Home, 5". (5) £150-300 - Sold for £420.

Lot 78 A worksplate, ENGLISH ELECTRIC, 2130/D230, 1956, from a Dutch Railways standard gauge 0-6-0DE, one of a batch of fifty-five 350hp diesel shunters built for Nederlandsce Spoorwegen. Cast brass, 10"x4½", in ex loco condition. £100-200 - Sold for £290.

Lot 79 A Swiss Federal Railways double royal poster, THE ELECTRIC ST. GOTTHARD LINE, by Baumberger. A little loss to lower right border. £150-300 - Sold for £260 to commission or postal bidder number 2892.

Lot 80 A worksplate, LONDON & NORTH EASTERN RAILWAY, 2279, N.B. LOCO Co, 1920, from a Great North of Scotland Railway Class F 4-4-0 No 52 built by the North British Locomotive Co, Works No 22565, in October 1920 and named GLEN GRANT after the residence of James Grant, a GNSR Director. It became LNER No 6852 and was renumbered 2279 in 1946, becoming BR 62279. At Kittybrewster by January 1948, it was withdrawn from there on 19 May 1955 and cut up at faraway Kilmarnock Works. Cast brass, 9"x5", the front repainted. £300-500 - Sold for £740.

Lot 81 An LNER seat back plate, HEXHAM, from the Newcastle and Carlise route, 22" long, in original condition. £300-500 - Sold for £660 to commission or postal bidder number 4059.

Lot 82 A smokebox numberplate, 32511, from a London Brighton & South Coast Railway E4 Class 0-6-2T No 511 built at Brighton in February 1901 and named LINGFIELD after a village in the Company's territory, although the name was removed before the end of 1910. It retained its LBSCR number in SR days, later renumbered 2511 and became BR 32511. A long time Horsham loco, it moved in 1951 to Brighton from where it was withdrawn in the week ending 15 September 1956 and cut up at Brighton Works in the week ending 3 November 1956. Ex loco condition. £500-800 - Sold for £780.

Lot 83 A LMS quad royal poster, NORTH WEST ENGLAND, by Freda Marston, 1895-1949, a view of the Buttermere Valley looking towards Fleetwith Pike and High Stile. Pin holes at corners. (ER053351) £250-400 - Sold for £300.

Lot 84 A shedplate 9G Northwich (1949 to February 1958), then Gorton (February 1958 to June 1965). The ex CLC shed at Northwich housed 40 locos during this period, three of which were ex GCR 4-4-0 Directors. It was then recoded 8E in 1958. The ex GCR shed at Gorton was transferred from the ER (39A) and all 110 of its charges carried the 9G code until closure in 1965. Repainted. £100-200 - Sold for £220.

Lot 85 A single line key token, PONTLOTTYN NORTH-RHYMNEY, (alloy), the final section of the branch from Bargoed. £100-200 - Sold for £120.

Lot 86 A GWR cabside numberplate, 3622, from a 8750 Class 0-6-0PT built at Swindon in May 1939. A long time Didcot engine, it moved to Southall at the end of 1960 with a final few weeks at Old Oak Common from where it was withdrawn in the week ending 29 August 1964 and despatched for scrap to George Cohen at Kettering on 12 November 1964. Withdrawn from Newton Heath in the week ending 29 June 1968, it was cut up by Drapers at Hull in the week ending 22 February 1969. Lot 92 A GWR cabside numberplate, GWR 3028, from a 2-8-0 built to Robinson's Great Central Railway design by Nasmyth Wilson, Works No 1281, in 1918, for the Railway Operating Division of the Royal Engineers, ROD No 1725. Loaned new to the Great Central, it returned to the ROD in August 1921 and was stored at Royds Green until purchased in August 1925 by the GWR who numbered it 3024, later changed to 3028. Allocated to Croes Newydd by January 1948 and later Stourbridge and Oxley from where it was withdrawn in March 1956, only to be reinstated before final withdrawal from Oxley on 9 August 1956. It was cut up at Swindon Works in the four weeks ending 3 November 1956. Cast brass, in ex loco condition. £1500-2000 - Sold for £2700.

Lot 94 A worksplate, LMS BUILT 1945 HORWICH. Locos built at Horwich in 1945 were LMS Class 5 4-6-0 Nos 4932-43 which became BR 44932-43 and Class 8F 2-8-0 Nos 8382-99 and 8490-5 which became BR 48382-99 and 48490-5. Cast iron, 10¼"x6", repainted. £150-300 - Sold for £210 to commission or postal bidder number 4137.

Lot 97 A smokebox numberplate, 61915, from a LNER K3 Class 2-6-0 No 1158 built by Armstrong Whitworth, Works No 1127, in May 1931, renumbered 1915 in 1946, becoming BR 61915. Allocated to New England by January 1948 and later Doncaster and March from where it was withdrawn on 16 September 1962 and sold for scrap to Central Wagon Co at Wigan. Lot 101 A worksplate, ROBERT STEPHENSON & Co Ltd, 3391, 1910, from a Rhymney Railway A Class 0-6-2T, RR No 14, one of a class designed for freight traffic. When the Rhymney was absorbed by the GWR in January 1922 the loco was taken into GWR stock, renumbered GWR 56 and allocated to Dowlais. Its later years were spent at Cardiff Cathays and Cardiff East Dock from where it was withdrawn on 28 September 1953 and cut up at Swindon Works in the four weeks ending 30 January 1954. Cast brass, 11"x5¼", the front lightly cleaned. £400-600 - Sold for £720.

Lot 102 A London, Brighton & South Coast Railway Tyers one wire block instrument with brass plate, HARDHAM JCN. The box was between Pulborough and Amberley on the Horsham to Littlehampton route, the junction for Midhurst. £400-600 - Sold for £1500.

Lot 103 A worksplate, KITSON & Co, 1918. In 1918 Kitson constructed 32 2-8-0 locos for the ROD which were numbered 1691 to 1632 (works numbers 5183 to 5194 and 5199 to 5218) and also examples for the Furness Railway and India. Although there is no direct evidence, it is highly likely that this plate is from one of the ROD locos. Cast iron, 10¾"x6½", repainted. £350-500 - Sold for £210.

Lot 107 A poster, MEDMENHAM ABBEY, by Paul Emile Lecompte, (1877-1950), a view of the historic building situated between Marlow and Henley-on-Thames. Lot 108 A GWR cabside numberplate, 6691, from a 5600 Class 0-6-2T built by Armstrong Whitworth, Works No 979, in October 1928. At Cardiff Canton by January 1948, it spent most of its BR days at Duffryn Yard with brief stays at Neyland, Merthyr, Rhymney and Llanelly from where it was withdrawn in the week ending 19 June 1965 and sold for scrap to Hayes at Bridgend on 28 July 1965. Cast brass, in ex loco condition. £300-500 - Sold for £620.

Lot 109 A Tyers No 6 single line tablet, ANNFIELD EAST-OXHILL, (fibre), a section on the Stanhope and Tyne Railway of 1834. The route east of Oxhill was abandoned in 1946, while this section was retained until 1969. £80-120 - Sold for £160.

Lot 110 A nameplate, LADY OF LYONS, from the GWR 2900 Saint Class 4-6-0 No 2903 built at Swindon in May 1906 and named in April 1907 after Pauline Descharpelles, the heroine of a novel by Bulwer Lytton, and one of only five Saints named after Ladies which survived beyond the early 1930s. It finished its days at Tyseley from where it was withdrawn on 4 November 1949 and cut up at Swindon Works in the four weeks ending 20 May 1950. Its later sheds were Hull Botanic Gardens, Middlesbrough, Thornaby, West Hartlepool and Low Moor from where it was withdrawn on 8 October 1962 and cut up at Darlington Works. Lot 115 A worksplate, LMS BUILT 1900, HORWICH. Locos built by the Lancashire & Yorkshire Railway at its Horwich Works in 1900 included 1008 Class 2-4-2T, some of which survived into BR service as Class 2P numbered in the 50XXX series, and 11 Class 0-6-0, many of which survived into BR service as Class 3F numbered in the 52XXX series. Cast brass, 10½"x6", characters cleaned but otherwise unrestored. £150-300 - Sold for £210.

Lot 117 A smokebox numberplate, 90096, from a War Department Austerity 2-8-0 built to Ministry of Supply order by the North British Locomotive Co, Works No 25364, in December 1944, WD No 78603. Loaned to the LNER in October 1946 and purchased by them in April 1947, it became their Class O7 No 3096 and was allocated to Heaton. It became BR 63096 and was renumbered 90096 in December 1951. Its BR sheds were March, Stratford, New England and Doncaster from where it was withdrawn on 19 September 1965 and cut up by Drapers at Hull in the week ending 11 December 1965. Repainted; a weld repair between the second 0 and the 9. £250-400 - Sold for £460.

Lot 131 A post box of the type mounted on a telegraph pole, George V vintage, with an enamel plate, EDDYS BRIDGE, showing collection times. Eddy Bridge, a stone bridge on the Tyne, is near Mugglewick, south of Consett in County Durham. Lot 132 A signal box nameboard, HANSLOPE. The box was on the West Coast main line between Wolverton and Roade. Cast letters on wood with beading, 48½" long, in original condition. £200-350 - Sold for £320.

Lot 133 A shedplate 61C Keith (1949 to January 1961 to steam, September 1966 completely). This former GNSR shed had 23 locos allocated in 1950, and in its final month had 26 locos on its books. On closure to steam the shed housed a small number of diesel shunters. Repainted. £100-200 - Sold for £210.

A long time North Blyth engine, it spent its final few months at Sunderland from where it was withdrawn on 1 July 1967 and sold for scrap to Hughes Bolckow at Blyth. Lot 140 A smokebox numberplate, 55231, from a Caledonian Railway 439 Class 0-4-4T No 418 built at St Rollox in 1922, becoming LMS No 15231 and BR Class 2P No 55231. At Dundee West by January 1935, its BR sheds were Dundee Tay Bridge, Inverness, Ayr and Corkerhill from where it was withdrawn on 6 June 1961 and cut up at Heatheryknowe. Area) Director (1944-47) who died on 16 April 1980. Allocated new to York and later Neville Hill, Thornaby, Ardsley and Wakefield from where it was withdrawn on 6 December 1966 and sold for scrap to Arnott Young at Parkgate & Rawmarsh on 16 February 1967. Lot 144 A worksplate, HAWTHORN LESLIE, 3169, 1916, from a standard gauge 0-4-0ST new to W. Bell & Co Chemical Works, Port Clarence, County Durham, as their No 9. Taken over by Dorman Long Ltd on 2 May 1923 and transferred in April 1932 to Dorman Long's Acklam Steelworks, Middlesbrough. Renumbered 14 and later still 18. Scrapped in June 1961. Cast brass, 13"x8½", the front cleaned but unpainted. £150-250 - Sold for £260.

Lot 145 A Rhymney Railway notice warning platelayers not to damage the asphalte on bridges. Cast iron, 16½"x9½", the front repainted. £200-350 - Sold for £160.

Lot 146 A mid-20th century SR 7" metal cased, going barrel drum clock used in Southampton Docks. Overall diameter: 8". Cast aluminium bezel, sight ring and drum with brass back. With integral wall fixing lugs, bezel securing lug with turn: the rear stamped 10882. The dial written SR John Walker 1, South Molton St. London 10882 with some retouching and with seconds ring and hand. Small going barrel balance spring movement, rear plate stamped Coventry Astral. Bought from Walkers in Oct.1947 for £7-10-0. Complete with winding key and copy of SR record. £250-400 - Sold for £1050.

Lot 147 A LB&SCR three aspect handlamp, complete with oval brass company nameplate and steel plates, MAYFIELD and M FIRBANK, PW DEPT. The lamp is complete with its interior, including a S(B)R vessel and embossed B plate, (Brighton), on the front. The lamp has been cleaned and tastefully restored. Mayfield was on the Eridge to Polegate route, closed in 1965. £500-600 - Sold for £880.

Lot 148 A nameplate, TRIGO, from the LNER A3 Class 4-6-2 No 2595 built at Doncaster, Works No 1731, in February 1930 and named after the racehorse owned by Mr W. Barnett which won the 1929 Derby and St Leger. Renumbered 84 in 1946, it became BR 60084. Always a North Eastern Area engine, it was allocated new to Gateshead, moving in 1943 to Heaton, back to Gateshead in 1945, then in 1949 to Neville Hill where it spent fourteen years before a final year back at Gateshead. Withdrawn from Gateshead on 23 November 1964, it was sold for scrap to Hughes Bolckow at Blyth, received there on 21 January 1965. Cast brass 56½" long, the front repainted. The plate is presented on and sold with a wooden splasher. £8000-10000 - Sold for £7000.

Lot 153 A LNER double royal poster, FACTORY SITES ON THE LNER, by Frank Newbold, 1887-1951, a striking 1930's image. Laid down on linen. £200-350 - Sold for £660.

Lot 154 A worksplate, LONDON NORTH EASTERN RAILWAY Co, No 1864, DONCASTER 1937, from the LNER A4 Class 4-6-2 No 4462, named GREAT SNIPE after the long-billed British bird when built in November 1937. It was renamed WILLIAM WHITELAW at a wartime meeting of the Directors at York on 24 July 1941 where the new nameplates were unveiled by the former Company Chairman in person. Renumbered as No 4 in August 1946, then E4 in January 1948, it became BR 60004 the following May. A long time Haymarket engine, it moved in May 1963 to Aberdeen Ferryhill where it worked on the Aberdeen to Glasgow expresses. Withdrawn from Ferryhill on 17 July 1966, it was sold for scrap to Motherwell Machinery & Scrap at Wishaw. Fully engraved brass, 13½"x7¾", the front polished. £5000-7000 - Sold for £5200.

Lot 155 An impressive good quality late 19th century South Eastern Railway 18" wall-mounted oak longcase regulator clock used at Walmer, Up Platform. A style rarely seen at auction and in good general condition. Overall height: 57". Drum top containing side door and supported by scroll decorated plinth above ogee moulding all fixed to the trunk. Trunk with full-length arched door secured by a lock, above half round moulding. The whole apparently supported by a pair of shaped brackets, but actually wall-hung. Backboard branded SER and with standard SER brass plate stamped 299 fixed inside the trunk door. Dial covered by substantial, glazed cast brass bezel hinged to allow winding. Dial written BR(S) John Walker 1, South Molton St., London 299 SE. Heavy weight driven regulator movement between rectangular plates with deadbeat escapement and Harrison’s maintaining power, rear plate stamped with standard SER scrolled cartouche. Mounted on replaced seat-board. Complete with wire-rod pendulum with cast Iron bob, lead weight (all replaced), cranked winder, door key and copy of SR records. Further notes on line. £2000-3000 - Sold for £1000.

Lot 161 A smokebox numberplate, 5692, from a GWR 5600 Class 0-6-2T built at Swindon in January 1927. Allocated to Merthyr by January 1948, its later sheds included Cardiff Cathays, Llanelly and Radyr from where it was withdrawn in the week ending 17 July 1965 and taken for scrap by Cashmores at Newport on the following 21 September. Lot 168 A worksplate, LMS BUILT 1894, ST ROLLOX. Although some other locos were built by the Caledonian Railway at St Rollox Works in 1894, this plate is almost certainly from a Drummond 294 Class Standard Goods 0-6-0, all bar one of which survived into BR service numbered in the 573XX series. Lot 170 A worksplate, LMS REBUILT 1910, ST ROLLOX. The works only rebuilt four locomotives in this year, all Caledonian Railway class 294 0-6-0 Jumbos, their BR numbers, last shed and withdrawal dates being as follows; 57271, Polmadie, October 1961; 57278, Motherwell, June 1963; 57292, Polmadie, November 1961; and 57323, Carstairs, June 1951. All were originally built at St Rollox except 57278 which was supplied by Neilson. Cast brass, 10½"x6", the front repainted. £400-500 - Sold for £400.00.

Lot 172 A shedplate 84C Banbury (1949 to September 1963), then Truro (September 1963 to November 1965). The ex GWR shed at Banbury housed between 50 and 70 locos during this period, before it was transferred to the LM region, becoming 2D. By the time the ex GWR shed at Truro had gained this code, it had lost its steam allocation and was being used as diesel stabling point. Closure came in November 1965. Lot 178 A smokebox numberplate, 48457, together with its worksplate, LMS BUILT DERBY, and its Stanier hooter whistle, from a LMS Class 8F 2-8-0 No 8457 built at Swindon to Railway Executive Committee order and allocated new to Oxley on 23 October 1944. In June 1947 it moved to Crewe South but spent most of its BR days from 1949 at Edge Hill with a final year or so at Speke Junction from where it was withdrawn in the week ending 1 October 1966 and cut up by Drapers at Hull in the week ending 18 February 1967. Lot 180 A worksplate, ANDREW BARCLAY, 1918, 1927, from a LMS Class 4F 0-6-0 No 4374 which became BR 44374. Allocated to Plodder Lane by January 1935 and later Carnforth, Barrow and Stoke. It spent its last five years at Crewe Works where it was used as a Works shunter and from where it was withdrawn in the week ending 2 February 1963 and cut up at the Works by 17 May 1963. Lot 188 A worksplate, LONDON & NORTH EASTERN RAILWAY, 3291, GATESHEAD WORKS, 1903, from a North Eastern Railway Class T, LNER Q5 Class, 0-8-0 No 1669 built at Gateshead in December 1903 and renumbered 3291 in 1946. It was allocated the BR number 63291 but this number had not been applied when it was withdrawn from its final shed, Middlesbrough, on 7 February 1949 and cut up at Darlington Works. Lot 190 A shedplate 81B Slough (1949 to June 1964). This ex GWR shed was home to 50 locos in the 1950s, which had dwindled to 25 in the early 1960s. Ex loco condition, the back marked 6143 in yellow crayon. £100-200 - Sold for £410.

Lot 191 A cabside numberplate, GWR 42, from a Rhymney Railway R Class 0-6-2T No 46 built by Beyer Peacock, Works No 6102, in December 1921. When the Railway and its locomotives was absorbed by the GWR in January 1922, it became GWR 42. Allocated to Cardiff Cathays by January 1948, it moved at the end of 1953 to Cardiff East Dock from where it was withdrawn on 16 September 1957 and cut up at Swindon Works in the week ending 1 February 1958. Cast iron, the front repainted, a hairline crack in the rim upper right, only visible on the back. £700-1000 - Sold for £1000.

Lot 196 A smokebox numberplate, 6135, from a GWR 6100 Class 2-6-2T built at Swindon in October 1932. A long time Old Oak Common engine, it moved in August 1964 to Reading and then Southall and Oxford from where it was withdrawn in the week ending 18 December 1965 and taken for scrap by Cashmores at Newport on 17 February 1966. In ex loco condition, retaining its original bolts. £300-500 - Sold for £840.

Allocated new to Crewe North on 8 September 1934 and later Carlisle Upperby, Camden, Willesden, Trafford Park and Millhouses, moving in April 1946 to Holbeck where it remained until withdrawal on 1 September 1965. Lot 202 A nameplate, JAMAICA, from the GWR 3300 Bulldog Class 4-4-0 numbered 3464 when built but renumbered 3402 under the GWR 1912 renumbering scheme. It was named when built, one of a group of Bulldog Class locos which took their names from Commonwealth countries and states. Lot 206 A worksplate, LONDON & NORTH EASTERN RAILWAY, 2858, DARLINGTON WORKS, 1936, from a LNER B17 Class 4-6-0 No 2858 built at Darlington in May 1936, renumbered 1658 in 1946, becoming BR 61658. Originally named NEWCASTLE UNITED when built, it was renamed THE ESSEX REGIMENT just one month later. At Stratford by January 1948, it moved in 1951 to March and in 1955 to Colchester where it spent most of its remaining days before moving back to Stratford from where it was withdrawn on 3 December 1959 and cut up at Doncaster Works. Lot 210 An industrial nameplate, COLWYN, from a standard gauge 0-6-0ST built by Kitson, Works No 5470, in 1933, and new to Lloyds Ironstone Co Ltd at Corby Quarries in March 1933 as their No 45. The Company became Stewarts & Lloyds Minerals Ltd in November 1949 and part of the British Steel Corporation in March 1970. The loco moved to Storefield Quarries in February 1969, still as No 45, but having lost its name. It was moved to Glendon East in June 1971 for loading for the North Norfolk Railway where it worked at Sheringham. It was sold in 1985 and arrived at the Northampton & Lamport Railway in July 1985 and is currently undergoing restoration at Pitsford & Brampton station. Cast brass, 27¾" long, the front repainted. Lot 218 An LB&SCR 10" early 20th century mahogany cased roundhead clock number 1103 B used at Brighton. Overall height: 12¼". Dial surround with several glued splits and now pinned to the box but with pegs and battens still present. Cast brass bezel. Rear of box stamped 1103 B. door with original lock (no key). Dial written in standard Walker/BR(S) style including red Arabic 24 hour figures. Chain fusee movement between plain rectangular plates, rear plate stamped Jos J. Complete with pendulum with replaced bob, winding key and copy of the SR records showing it was supplied in 1914 by the Clerkenwell firm of J. Jennens for £2-0-6 and used in the waste cleaning shop at Brighton, later moved to the telephone repair hut. £500-800 - Sold for £450.

At Darlington by January 1948, its later sheds were Neville Hill, Selby, Thornaby, Malton and Hull Dairycoates from where it was withdrawn on 3 December 1962 and cut up at Darlington Works. Lot 222 A Great Western Railway Hotels wine bottle cooler in Regency style, used at the Tregenna Castle Hotel, St Ives. Wooden with brass banding, the upper band engraved with the company name, 25½"x16", height 24½". The original zinc interior absent. £300-500 - Sold for £2700.

Lot 223 A smokebox numberplate, 61037, from the LNER B1 Class 4-6-0 No 1037 built at Darlington, Works No 2017, in November 1947, becoming BR 61037, and named JAIROU after a species of Indian antelope found only on the remote higher steppes of Tibet. Allocated new to Darlington, it soon moved to Stockton, where it spent ten years, and later Haverton Hill, Thornaby and finally back to Darlington from where it was withdrawn on 18 May 1964 and sold for scrap to Hughes Bolckow at Blyth. Repainted. £600-900 - Sold for £1100.

Lot 224 A mid to late 19th century 10" LYR drop-case clock No. 2105 in mahogany case. Overall height: 17". With replacements and repairs. The convex moulded one piece dial surround with repaired splits and holding a replaced bezel with clip-in sight ring. The box, lacking case stop, the top with standard LYR steel plate stamped 2105, the left side possible sanded but still with some pin holes (a common LYR feature) and the rear with typical BR E/NE repair notes suggesting possible transfer to this region after nationalisation. Dial repainted and written JNo. Agar L.Y.R. 2105 Bury in an approximation to the standard LYR style. Hands replaced. Wire fusee movement, requiring cleaning, between shaped plates with feet. Complete with replaced pendulum with large bob stamped 376 in typical LYR style and winding key. Est: £400-600 £500-800 - Sold for £1120.

Lot 235 A smokebox numberplate, 62022, from a Peppercorn K1 Class 2-6-0 built by the North British Locomotive Co, Works No 26626, and allocated new to Blaydon on 4 August 1949. Its later sheds were Consett and North Blyth from where it was withdrawn on 4 September 1966 and sold for scrap to Hughes Bolckow at Blyth. Notably the loco hauled the last train on the Border Counties Line. Repainted, a small section milled from the top rim to clear the smokebox door handle. Lot 236 A shedplate 87G Carmarthen (1949 to April 1964). This ex GWR shed was home to 40 locos during the 1950s. In the early 60s it housed 5 Manors and, surprisingly, the same number of ex WD 2-8-0s. Ex loco condition. £100-200 - Sold for £120.

Lot 237 A worksplate TANGSHAN, CHINA, October 1974, from a Class SY 2-8-2 in the number range 0892-0905. This is one of the rarer plates from the period when the railways and workshops came under the Ministry of Communications (rather than a separate Ministry of Railways). It is also very unusual for being made of cast iron - most were aluminium, 15¾"x7"; the plate has been broken and the current owner has made a repair by screwing a steel plate to the back, but it is otherwise in ex-loco condition. £150-300 - Sold for £150 to commission or postal bidder number 7078.

Lot 239 A smokebox numberplate, 80028, from a BR Standard Class 4MT 2-6-4T built at Brighton and allocated new to Kittybrewster in January 1952. A regular performer on the Killin branch, it was withdrawn from Perth on 26 September 1966 and sold for scrap to Campbells at Airdrie. The plate has been repainted. £400-600 - Sold for £820.

Allocated new to Gateshead, it moved in July 1946 to Heaton where it spent almost all its working life with a final year at Tweedmouth from where it was withdrawn on 12 November 1962 and cut up at Doncaster Works. Lot 246 A nameplate badge from Class 50 50005 COLLINGWOOD. New to London Midland Western Lines in January 1968 as D405 EE/VF 3775/D1146; it was named at Laira depot in April 1978. In November 1987 it was twinned with the warship of the same name and this badge was displayed below the nameplate. It was withdrawn in November 1990 and cut up at Old Oak Common by Coopers Metals. Lot 250 A GWR cabside numberplate, 2930, from the 2900 Saint Class 4-6-0, SAINT VINCENT, built at Swindon in September 1907 and named when built, probably after the Spanish martyr Vincent of Saragossa. Allocated by January 1948 to Chester GW from where it was withdrawn on 31 October 1949 and cut up at Swindon Works in the four weeks ending 3 December 1949. Cast brass, the front repainted. £1500-2000 - Sold for £1700.

Lot 251 An attractive early 20th Century, 12" Caledonian Rly oak-cased drop-case fusee clock probably from Airdrie. Overall height: 20 inches. Recently restored with replacements including bezel, pendulum and side door. Box with bottom door with lock, shaped, brass edged, glazed pendulum window, flanked by carved ears and the rear chalk marked Ex Airdrie with more indistinct detail. Dial repainted and written Caledonian Railway Coy; the rear with repair notes from the 1930s and later. Small plastic covered wire fusee movement between rectangular plates. Clock typical of a number bought by the Caledonian from Smiths of Clerkenwell during and after the First World War this one possibly for the reopening of their station at Airdrie in 1919. Lot 257 A smokebox numberplate, 32565, from a London Brighton & South Coast Railway E4 Class 0-6-2T No 565 built at Brighton in May 1902 and named LITTLETON after a village in the Company's territory, although the name was removed before the end of 1910. It retained its LBSCR number in SR days but was later renumbered 2565 and became BR 32565. It spent all its BR days at Bricklayers Arms from where it was withdrawn in the week ending 1 July 1961 and cut up at Ashford Works by the following 5 August. In ex loco condition; a weld repair between the numbers 2 and 5. £500-800 - Sold for £350.

Lot 259 A shedplate 9F Heaton Mersey (May 1950 to December 1956, then February 1958 to May 1968). This ex Cheshire Lines shed, formerly 19D and 13C, was home to 2 GCR D11 Directors in a total of around 60 locos during the 1950s. A long time Bournemouth engine, it moved in 1956 to Eastleigh from where it was withdrawn in the week ending 10 February 1962 and cut up at Ashford Works by 24 February. Lot 269 A Worksplate HAWTHORN LESLIE, 2812, REBUILT 1957, from a standard gauge 0-6-0T built by Kitson, Works No 4294, in 1905 and new to Lambton, Hetton & Joicey Collieries Ltd at Beamish Pit, their No 5, and named MAJOR. Rebuilt by Hawthorn Leslie in 1931 under repair job number 2812, it became National Coal Board property in January 1947 at Beamish Engine Works. Rebuilt a second time by Robert Stephenson & Hawthorns in 1957 when this plate was attached. It moved to the NCB's Handen Hold Colliery at West Pelton in July 1963 and to Derwenthaugh Loco Shed in April 1966 and was scrapped in May 1970. Lot 274 A smokebox numberplate, 90586, from a War Department Austerity 2-8-0 built to Ministry of Supply order by Vulcan Foundry, Works No 4951, in November 1943, WD No 77135, and loaned new to the LNER, allocated to Newport NER, and in September 1944 to the GWR, allocated to Severn Tunnel Junction. Returned to the WD in February 1945 and again loaned to the LNER in October 1947, allocated to Neville Hill. Following acquisition by BR its later sheds were Hull Springhead and Hull Dairycoates from where it was withdrawn on 13 February 1966 and cut up by Drapers at Hull by 25 June 1966. Allocated to Southall by January 1948 and later Pontypool Road, Cardiff Canton, Banbury, Oswestry and Croes Newydd from where it was withdrawn in the week ending 21 August 1965 and sold for scrap to Woodham Bros at Barry on 1 October 1965. Lot 278 A nameplate, EARL OF DUCIE, which was first carried by the GWR 3200 (later 9000) Earl Class 4-4-0 No 3211 (9011 from August 1946) built at Swindon in March 1937, using parts from the Bulldog Class 4-4-0 No 3415, and named after the Earl who lived at Tortworth Court in South Gloucestershire. In 1937 the GWR decided to remove the Earl names from the 4-4-0s and transfer these to recently built 4073 Castle Class 4-6-0s and No 5054 (named Lamphey Castle when built in June 1936) was renamed EARL OF DUCIE in September 1937. Allocated to Cardiff Canton by January 1948 and later Bristol Bath Road, Old Oak Common, Carmarthen, Neath Court Sart, Llanelly, Hereford, Worcester and Gloucester from where it was withdrawn in the week ending 24 October 1964 and cut up at Swindon Works. The bottom of the splasher of this left hand plate clearly shows where the radius has been altered to accommodate the larger driving wheels of the Castle Class engine. £7000-10000 - Sold for £13600 to commission or postal bidder number 4037.

Lot 283 A worksplate, VULCAN, 6050, 1953, from a 5ft 3ins gauge Victorian Railways Class J 2-8-0 No 504. Fifty were built but they were overtaken by modernisation and by the late 1960s were largely relegated to shunting at various country yards with many losing their cowcatchers and gaining shunter's steps on the tender sides. The last of the Class was withdrawn in 1972 and eleven have been preserved. Cast brass, 9"x5¼", the front lightly cleaned. £150-250 - Sold for £370.

Lot 296 A GWR cabside numberplate, 5669, from a 5600 Class 0-6-2T built at Swindon in June 1926. At Barry by January 1948, it spent of its BR days at Cardiff Cathays and Radyr with brief stays at Abercynon and Treherbert. It was withdrawn from Radyr in the week ending 5 September 1964 and sold for scrap to Woodham Bros at Barry on 19 November 1964. Cast iron, repainted. £300-500 - Sold for £340.

Lot 297 A Pullman Car table lamp, from a third class car used on the Brighton Belle. Although a relatively plain design, it is of the classic Pullman style, stamped T.C.87. A replacement top nut is required. £250-400 - Sold for £200.

Lot 298 A worksplate, HAWTHORN LESLIE, 3878, 1936, from a standard gauge 0-6-0ST named PEMBERTON new to Pemberton Colliery Ltd (later National Coal Board) at Pemberton Colliery, Lancashire. It moved to Ince Moss Colliery in 1947 and was loaned to Chiswell Hall Colliery in 1950 before being temporarily stored at Welch Whittle Colliery in 1960. Circa December 1960 it was transferred to Huncoat Colliery where it was renamed FALCON. In March 1968 it was sent to William Pit at Whitehaven where it was scrapped by John Roper (Workington) Ltd in April 1969. Cast brass, 13"x8½", the front repainted. Lot 299 A locomotive headboard, THE MID-DAY SCOT, as used from Summer 1951 on the Euston to Glasgow Central express. The title was introduced by the LMS in 1927 but withdrawn during the war years and not reinstated until 1949. It last ran in June 1965. Cast aluminium, 33¼"x15¾", repainted, though plenty of the usual service knocks. £1500-2000 - Sold for £2300.

Lot 301 A LNER locomotive whistle from V2 class 60872, KING'S OWN YORKSHIRE LIGHT INFANTRY, built at Doncaster, Works No 1898, in April 1939, as No 4843. It spent most of its working life at Doncaster from where it was withdrawn on 22 September 1963 and cut up at the nearby Works. Cast brass, mounted on a wooden stand, height 6½", a style unique to the V2 class. £300-500 - Sold for £870.

Lot 303 A late 19th century Hull & Barnsley Railway 12" roundhead clock in mahogany case from the Time Office, Springhead Loco. Running Shed, Hull. Overall height: 14¾". Box with single side door and bottom door secured by a key-operated lock. Convex moulded one-piece dial surround with repaired split and abraded in places, originally with bezel lock- now removed, containing a replaced old style spun bezel with soldered sight ring. Dial with minor damage and crazing, written LNER 4648, with the partial shadow of H B & WR Jn Ry in the upper half, Cooke & Son Hull clearly visible in the lower. The rear with repair notes from 1885 and later, also in pencil No. 16, perhaps the H&B number once on the dial but now leaving no obvious shadow. Chain fusee movement between rectangular plates. 4648 marked in various places on case and movement. Complete with pendulum, winding key, door key and copies of the LNER records confirming location. Lot 311 A worksplate, KERR STUART, 4371, 1926, from a LMS Class 4F 0-6-0 No 4343 which became BR 44343. At Stoke by January 1935, its later sheds included Watford and Workington from where it was withdrawn in the week ending 12 March 1960 and subsequently scrapped, possibly at Horwich Works where it was noted on 23 September 1961 although Horwich records do not verify this. Cast brass, 12¾"x6¾", the front repainted. £500-600 - Sold for £550.

Lot 312 A London & South Western Railway poster, LONDON & BUDE, announcing a fast four horse coach from Bideford Station via Clovelly. 22½"x35½", laid down to conserve. The railway reached Bideford in 1882, the year this poster was issued. Although a route from Okehampton to Holsworthy opened in 1879 this was not extended to Bude until 1898. £150-300 - Sold for £210.

Lot 315 A nameplate, KING LEODEGRANCE, with KING ARTHUR CLASS appendage below, from the London & South Western Railway N15 King Arthur Class 4-6-0 No 739 designed by Robert Urie and named after the father of Queen Guinevere in Arthurian legend. As BR 30739 it was allocated to Eastleigh by January 1948 and later Salisbury and Nine Elms before moving in December 1950 to Bournemouth from where it was withdrawn in the week ending 4 May 1957 and cut up at Eastleigh Works by 18 May. Lot 318 A smokebox numberplate, 47230, from a Midland Railway 2441 Class 0-6-0T No 2751 built by Vulcan Foundry, Works No 1783, in 1902. Re-boilered in 1919, it was renumbered 1930 in 1907 and retained this number in LMS days until renumbered 7230 in 1934, becoming BR Class 3F No 47230. Allocated to Stoke by January 1935, it moved the following year to Upper Bank where it spent fourteen years before moving to nearby Swansea Paxton Street for a further seven years. Its later sheds included Bank Hall, Agecroft, Edge Hill and Carlisle Kingmoor from where it was withdrawn in the week ending 7 November 1964 and despatched for scrap to Hughes Bolckow at Blyth on 8 February 1965. At Gateshead by January 1948 and later Hull Dairycoates and Tyne Dock before finishing its days back at Gateshead, sub-shedded at Bowes Bridge, from where it was withdrawn on 9 February 1959 and cut up at Darlington Works. Lot 321 A Midland & Great Northern Railway platform wall lamp with blue glass panel, WEYBOURNE. The copper body has been repainted and the lamp is complete with vessel, burner and glass chimney. The station was on the Melton Constable to Cromer route. £300-500 - Sold for £420.

Lot 323 A GWR cabside numberplate, 2260, from a 2251 Class 0-6-0 built at Swindon in April 1930. A long time Machynlleth engine, it was withdrawn from there on 3 November 1961 and cut up at Swindon Works in the four weeks ending 24 February 1962. Lot 325 A worksplate, NORTH BRITISH LOCOMOTIVE Co, HYDE PARK, 20628, 1914, from a Standard Gauge New South Wales Government Railways Class D50 2-8-0 which was initially classified T and numbered 1294 and later became D50 No 5267. This large Class of 280 engines were built between 1896 and 1916, 84 of them by North British. No 5267 was withdrawn in July 1962 and condemned the following May. Four of the Class have been preserved. Cast brass, 7¾" diameter, the front lightly cleaned. £200-350 - Sold for £200.

Lot 326 A GWR early 20th century 12" mahogany drop case clock of standard GWR style. Overall height: 28", the case stripped and re-finished. Box with incurved base containing door, the lock replaced by the normal GWR spring loaded ball latch and two side doors. Ivorine plate marked G.W.R. 2984 screwed to left side of box. Four piece convex moulded dial surround containing a replaced clip-in, spun brass bezel. Dial repainted and written G.W.R. Kay & Co. Makers. Chain fusee movement between plain rectangular plates. Complete with pendulum and winder. £1200-1500 - Sold for £1250.

Lot 327 A shedplate 34E Neasden (1949 to February 1958) then New England until January 1965 for steam, and September 1968 completely. The ex GCR shed at Neasden was home to over 80 locos in the 1950s, including several A3s and a handful of B1 Antelopes. It was transferred to the LMR (14D), and the ex GNR shed at New England (35A) took over the code. Well over 100 locos were housed at New England. It was noted for its A2s and latterly the displaced A3s and A4s from Kings Cross. Ex loco condition. £100-200 - Sold for £270.

Lot 330 A worksplate, LONDON NORTH EASTERN RAILWAY, 1873, DONCASTER, 1938, from the LNER A4 Class 4-6-2 No 4500 built in April 1938 and originally named GARGANEY after a type of duck but renamed SIR RONALD MATTHEWS after the Chairman of the LNER Board of Directors following a Director's meeting in London on 27 April 1939. It received the prestigious No 1 in 1946, becoming BR 60001. From new always a Gateshead engine, it was withdrawn from there on 12 October 1964 and received for scrap by the breakers Hughes Bolckow at Blyth on 10 December 1964. Fully engraved brass, 13¼"x7½", the front lightly polished, the back rim neatly stamped with loco details. £5000-8000 - Sold for £5100.

Lot 347 A Blackpool, St Annes & Lytham Tramways poster board complete with enamel header, LYTHAM TRAMS, 27"x7" with poster attached, I'M GOING TO LYTHAM BY ELECTRIC CAR. Overall size, 28¾"x50½"; a remarkable survivor. £400-600 - Sold for £750.

Lot 348 An attractive mid to late 19th century 14" mahogany drop-case fusee clock possibly of Furness Railway origin, and recovered from Harrington along with much other railway material. Overall height: 26¼". Box with shaped, glazed, brass-edged pendulum window and fan-carved ears. Side and bottom doors replaced, case stop and section of backboard missing. Right side of box with pairs of pin holes neither from an LMSR number plate. Dial with the shadow of Spittall, Whitehaven, and joined to the movement by a false plate. Replaced, undersized spun bezel with clip-in sight ring. Replaced 20th century chain fusee movement in need of cleaning, between plain rectangular plates with slave drive and requiring work. John Spittall born in Whitehaven about 1834 son of James a clockmaker, worked in Whitehaven all his life, a supplier or contractor to the Furness and possibly other local railway companies. Lot 367 An East Coast Route double royal poster, Great Northern, North Eastern and North British Railways depicting the territorial areas of the Clans of Scotland. Lot 394 A shedplate 10D Plodder Lane (1935 to October 1954), then Sutton Oak (October 1954 to February 1958), and Lostock Hall (September 1963 to August 1968). The ex LNWR shed at Plodder Lane had just 17 locos on its books. On closure the code was adopted by ex LNWR shed Sutton Oak, formerly 10E, which looked after 35 locos. It became 8G and closed in June 1967. Finally, ex LYR shed Lostock Hall, formerly 24C, had an allocation of 30 when using this code. Ex loco condition. £100-200 - Sold for £260.

Lot 396 A nameplate, THE BEDALE, from a LNER D49 Hunt Class 4-4-0 No 235 built at Darlington in June 1932 and named after the foxhunt operating in the Bedale and Leeming Bar area. Renumbered 2740 in 1946, it became BR 62740. Allocated to York North by January 1948 and later Starbeck, Neville Hill and Hull Dairycoates from where it was withdrawn on 1 August 1960 and cut up at Darlington Works. Cast brass, 33" long, the front repainted. £12000-15000 - Sold for £10200.

Lot 397 A North British Railway cash bag with brass plate N.B.R, SALTOUN, a station on the Gifford and Garvald Light Railway, south east of Edinburgh, which closed to passengers in 1933. £150-300 - Sold for £220 to commission or postal bidder number 705.

Lot 398 A shedplate 53C Hull Springhead (1949 to December 1958). This shed was adjacent the H&BR works of the same name. Its 1950 allocation of 55 locos dwindled to just 16 at closure in 1958. The front repainted. £100-200 - Sold for £310.

Lot 399 A locomotive tritone chime whistle from LNER A4 class 60017, SILVER FOX built at Doncaster, Works No 1823, in December 1935, as No 2512. It spent almost all its life at Kings Cross with a final few months at New England from where it was withdrawn in October 1963. The whistle is accompanied by its original BR receipt and associated paperwork, dated August 1964, to Mr W.J.Eccles of Farnborough, showing the loco number 60017. Chromed cast brass, 13" tall, diameter 4½". £3000-4000 - Sold for £4900.

Lot 401 A worksplate, HUNSLET, 4342, 1952, and its matching numberplate 203, from a 2ft gauge 120hp 0-8-0 diesel, one of a batch of four supplied to the Sudan Gezira Board for use on the Gezira Light Railway which served the Board's extensive cotton plantations. The worksplate, cast brass, 11½"x8", the numberplate, cast aluminium, 14"x7½", both in ex loco condition. (2) £200-500 - Sold for £200.

Lot 403 A GWR signal box shelf plate, FROM HARTLEBURY STATION. The box was on the Birmingham Snow Hill to Worcester route. Engraved brass, 4¾"x1½". £100-200 - Sold for £120.

Lot 404 A worksplate, LONDON NORTH EASTERN RAILWAY, No 1842, DONCASTER, 1936, REBUILT 1944, from the LNER P2 Class 2-8-2 No 2006 built at Doncaster in September 1936, one of a class of six Mikados designed specifically for working the severely graded main line from Edinburgh to Aberdeen. All were given Scottish themed names, No 2006 being named WOLF OF BADENOCH after Sir Alexander Stewart, the Earl of Buchan, who earned this nickname by his harrowing raids on the bishopric of Moray. Allocated new to Haymarket, it moved to Aberdeen Ferryhill in November 1936, returning to Haymarket in October 1942. The whole class were converted to 4-6-2s and re-classified as Class A2/2 in 1943/4, this loco being rebuilt in May 1944. It remained at Haymarket in its new guise until moving south in November 1949 to New England from where it was withdrawn on 4 April 1961 and cut up at Doncaster Works. Fully engraved brass, 13¼"x7¾", with cast rebuild plate, the front lightly polished, the back stamped 506. £7000-8000 - Sold for £8200.

Lot 405 A single line gangers occupation key, WOODBURN-SCOTSGAP, (brass), from the Wansbeck branch between Morpeth and Reedsmouth, closed to passengers in 1952 and freight 1966. £250-400 - Sold for £500 to commission or postal bidder number 8417.

Lot 406 A shedplate 10A Springs Branch, Wigan (1935 to February 1958), then Carnforth (September 1963 to August 1968). This ex LNWR shed at Wigan had over 50 locos during this period. The ex LNWR shed at Carnforth, formerly 11A and 24L, had just 3 Jubilees when it adopted this code, but its most famous charge was undoubtedly the last Britannia, 70013, which worked 1T57 on the final day of mainline steam. The front repainted, a weld repair to the right. £100-200 - Sold for £50.

Lot 414 An industrial nameplate, WARWICKSHIRE, from a 0-6-0ST built by Robert Stephenson & Hawthorns, Works No 7752, in 1953. It spent all its working life at the National Coal Board's Baddesley Colliery, Baxterley and in February 1968 went to Bush Ltd at Alfreton for scrap. Cast brass, 32½" long, shaped to fit the saddle tank, the front cleaned but unpainted; the back marked 7752. £400-600 - Sold for £1000.

Lot 417 A worksplate GREAT NORTHERN Ry Co, No 1281, MAKERS, 1910, DONCASTER WORKS, from a GNR Ivatt Class C1 4-4-2 Atlantic No 1457 new in October 1910, renumbered 4457 in 1924 and allocated the number 2887 under the 1946 renumbering scheme although not actually renumbered before the loco was withdrawn in March 1946 and subsequently scrapped. Lot 422 A Great Western Railway leather document pouch with brass plates, GWR, TETBURY and AUDIT OFFICE, PADDINGTON. Excellent condition, overall size 15¼"x10", complete with straps and buckle. Lot 423 A (GWR) cabside numberplate, 6995, from the 6959 Modified Hall Class 4-6-0, BENTHALL HALL, built at Swindon in December 1948 and named when built after the National Trust property four miles from Much Wenlock in Shropshire. Allocated new to Taunton on 21 December 1948 and later Cardiff Canton, Cardiff East Dock, Gloucester LMR, Gloucester WR and Worcester from where it was withdrawn on 26 March 1965 and sold for scrap to Birds Commercial Motors at Long Marston on 4 May 1965. Lot 425 A smokebox numberplate, 48543, together with its Stanier hooter, from a LMS Stanier type 2-8-0 built to Railway Executive Committee order by the LNER at Darlington, Works No 1949, in 1945. Allocated new to Aberdeen Ferryhill on 11 January 1945 and then St Margarets, it moved south of the border in 1947 to Derby and its later sheds included Coalville, Wellingborough, Toton, Heaton Mersey, Warrington Dallam and Newton Heath from where it was withdrawn in the week ending 12 February 1966 and despatched for scrap to T.W. Lot 433 A nameplate, CONDOVER HALL, from the GWR 4900 Hall Class 4-6-0 No 4915 built at Swindon in February 1929 and named after the building four miles south of Shrewsbury, now a school for the blind, where the other nameplate resides. Allocated to Carmarthen by January 1948, its later sheds included Shrewsbury, Didcot and Reading from where it was withdrawn in the week ending 23 February 1963 and cut up at Swindon Works in the week ending 11 May 1963. £5000-6000 - Sold for £7200 to commission or postal bidder number 3142.

Lot 435 A worksplate, NASMYTH WILSON, 1425, 1924, from a 5ft 3ins gauge 4-4-2T built for the Great Northern Railway of Ireland, their Class T2 No 115. It was converted to oil burning in 1946 but reverted to coal in 1948. It was taken over by the Great Northern Railway Board in 1953 and became part of CIE (Coras Iompair Eireann) stock in 1958, before being withdrawn the following year. Cast brass, 14"x5½", lightly cleaned but unpainted. Loss to right lug surrounding bolt hole. £450-700 - Sold for £720.

Lot 436 A pair of Stratford upon Avon and Midland Junction Railway signal lever plates, from Kineton box, 5,POINTS TRAP IN HORSE BOX SIDING and SIGNAL UP PLATFORM STARTING. Each engraved brass, 2"x6", the face polished. (2) £100-200 - Sold for £100.

Lot 437 A smokebox numberplate, 51246, from a Lancashire & Yorkshire Railway 260 Class 0-4-0ST No 56 built at Horwich in June 1910, becoming LMS Class 0F No 11246 and BR 51246. These small tank engines were almost always known as Pugs. Allocated to Bank Hall by January 1935, where it spent all its later life apart from three years at Goole from 1947 until 1950. It was withdrawn in the week ending 7 October 1961 and cut up at Horwich Works on 27 October. Ex loco condition. £500-800 - Sold for £2100.

Lot 439 A worksplate, KITSON, 1903, 1873, from a 3ft 9ins gauge 4-6-0T No 2 (formerly named FOWLER) supplied new to the Bilbao Iron Ore Co Ltd in Northern Spain for use on the line which connected the iron ore mines near Galdames to Staithes at La Iberia near Sestao. There was considerable cannibalisation of parts with the result that several locos did not necessarily carry their original identities. By the mid-1960s there was little iron ore traffic and sometime after then the loco was scrapped. Engraved brass, 10¾"x6½", the front lightly polished. Lot 449 A worksplate, LONDON & NORTH EASTERN RAILWAY, 69774, Darlington, 1910, from a North Eastern Railway Class Y, LNER A7 Class, 4-6-2T No 1136 built at Darlington in December 1910, renumbered 9774 in 1946, becoming BR 69774. A long time Hull Springhead loco, it was withdrawn from there on 23 August 1954 and cut up at Darlington Works. Cast iron, 9"x5", the front repainted. Lot 450 A depot plaque for IMMINGHAM depicting a star and garter. Cast aluminium, 17¾" square, in ex loco condition. £200-350 - Sold for £330 to commission or postal bidder number 3469.

Lot 451 A nameplate, THE PRINCE OF WALES'S VOLUNTEERS SOUTH LANCASHIRE, from the LMS Royal Scot Class 7P 4-6-0 No 6137 built by the North British Locomotive Co, Works No 23632, in 1927, becoming BR 46137 and the last of the Class to be rebuilt with tapered boiler in March 1955. Originally named VESTA in 1928 after the pioneer loco built by Robert Stephenson, it was renamed after the locally based regiment at Warrington Bank Quay station on 14 October 1936. Allocated new to Crewe North on 1 October 1927, its later sheds included Upperby, Camden, Crewe North, Edge Hill, Longsight, Saltley and finally back to Upperby from where it was withdrawn on 31 October 1962 and cut up at Crewe Works by 9 May 1963. Cast brass, 50½" long, the front repainted. £9000-12000 - Sold for £11200.

Lot 452 A Taff Vale Railway boundary post. Cast iron, 38½" tall, repainted. £100-200 - Sold for £130.

Lot 453 A North Eastern Railway 12" roundhead clock in mahogany case of uncertain origin and date but probably in use at Lockington on the Hull to Scarborough route by 1933. Overall height: 14 inches. The case with a replaced bezel with clip-in sight ring. Box with single side door with one loose edge strip and bottom door with a turn lacking tongue. Dial written LNER 12054 with minor damage and some cracking and with the shadow of Hull in the lower half. Mid-19th century wire fusee movement between plates with feet, shaped shoulders joined by knopped pillars stamped ex Y.R.K twice on the front plate (hence not visible unless dismantled). Ex LNER records show that LNER 12054 was used at Kilnwick Gate, Lockington, an ex-NER station. Complete with replaced pendulum, bob scratched Carpenter, winding key and copy of LNER records for number 12054. Further Notes on line. £400-600 - Sold for £400.

Lot 454 A London Transport box sign, BUS STOP, RED ARROW, used for the dedicated express service between Waterloo and Victoria and other main line termini. Double sided enamel, 18"x21½, in excellent condition. £100-200 - Sold for £220 to commission or postal bidder number 211.

Lot 455 A BR(M) totem sign, STOKE MANDEVILLE, (f/f) from the Marylebone to Aylesbury section of the Great Central Main line. A couple of minor blemishes to the far left. £300-500 - Sold for £740.

Lot 456 A South Yorkshire Joint Line Committee trespass notice in Great Central style. Cast iron 20½"x11½", in original condition. £150-300 - Sold for £150.

Lot 457 A nameplate, MERTHYR VALE, from a standard gauge 0-6-0ST built by Peckett, Works No 483, in October 1890 and new to Nixon's Navigation Co Ltd at Merthyr Vale Colliery, Merthyr Vale, their No 5, where it spent all its working life until scrapped on site in May 1962. The Colliery and its locos were transferred to Llewellyn (Nixon) Ltd in May 1929 and to Powell Duffryn Ltd in 1936, becoming part of the NCB in January 1947. Lot 458 An advertising sign, IVY TEA. Enamel, 9"x18", considerable restoration to lettering though the image excellent. £100-200 - Sold for £290.

Lot 459 A worksplate, SCHWEIZERISCHE, WINTERTHUR, 3251, 1928, from an Indonesian State Railways (PNKA) 3ft 6ins gauge Mallett type 2-6-6-0 articulated loco built by the Swiss Locomotive & Machine Works at its Winterthur factory. Originally numbered 1628 but later classified as Class 50 and renumbered CC50028, it worked on the island of Java where most of Indonesia's railways were concentrated. Cast brass, 16½"x5¾", in ex loco condition; painted L1628 on the back. £200-350 - Sold for £360.

Lot 460 A signalbox nameboard, ALNMOUTH, from the East Coast Main Line north of Newcastle. Cast letters on wood, 49¾"x12¾". The front repainted. £150-300 - Sold for £420.

Lot 461 A GWR lamp tablet, THE LAKES, from the North Warwickshire Line between Birmingham and Stratford-on-Avon. The halt was opened in 1935, situated between Shirley and Henley in Arden. Enamel, 18" long, within alloy frame. £200-350 - Sold for £420 to commission or postal bidder number 1338.

Lot 462 A shedplate 18B Westhouses (1935 to September 1963). This ex Midland shed was home to over 60 locos in the 1950s. It lost this code and became 16G. An LMS style plate in ex loco condition, the back marked 92100, Dec 62. £100-200 - Sold for £220 to commission or postal bidder number 4815.

Lot 464 A smokebox numberplate, 46487, from a (LMS) Class 2 2-6-0 built at Darlington, Works No 2179, and allocated new to Newton Heath on 9 November 1951. Its other sheds included Lees, Springs Branch and Northwich from where it was withdrawn in the week ending 6 May 1967 and sold for scrap to Cashmores at Great Bridge, entering their yard on 12 October 1967. Lot 465 A LNER cash bag with brass plate, LNER KENNET. The station is on the Bury St Edmunds route. £50-80 - Sold for £40.

Lot 466 A shedcode 5A Crewe North (1935 to May 1965). This ex LNWR shed with its predominance of express passenger engines was a spotter’s valhalla. Patriots, Jubilees, Royal Scots, Princesses, Coronations, and in the final years Britannias, all graced this depot. 130 locos were allocated here in the 50s and in its final months around 40 locos carried this code. Ex loco condition, the back marked, Dec 1962, 45595, Southern Rhodesia. £100-200 - Sold for £240 to commission or postal bidder number 2409.

Lot 468 A worksplate, BEYER PEACOCK 1930, of a previously unrecorded pattern not shown in Buckle & Love's worksplate guide. Although most of the LMS 2-6-0+0-6-2 Beyer Garratts were built in 1930, these are all believed to have carried a different style of worksplate. Lot 470 A booking office seal, MADDERTY, LMS, from the Perth to Crieff route; the station closed in 1951. The seal has a brass head and turned wooden handle, 3½" tall. £100-200 - Sold for £250 to commission or postal bidder number 1183.

Lot 471 A tender plate, LMS, 3302, 1924, from a 3500 gallon tender coupled new to LMS Class 4P 4-4-0 No 1066 built at Derby in 1924 and which became BR 41066, although tenders were frequently exchanged in later years. Lot 472 A Great Northern Railway Hotel fish slice, the name in garter surrounding the letter 'L' (London). Silver plate, 12" long, some wear though a pleasing design. £50-80 - Sold for £90.

Lot 473 A works plate, BUILT 1963 CREWE from a Class 52 Western in the number series D1050 to 1073. Cast aluminium, 10¼"x6", the front repainted. £250-400 - Sold for £270.

Lot 475 A GWR cabside numberplate, 8782, from a 8750 Class 0-6-0PT built at Swindon in January 1934. A long time resident of Neath Court Sart, it finished its days at Llanelly from where it was withdrawn on 14 November 1961 and sold for scrap to Cashmores at Newport on 6 February 1962. Lot 476 A GWR signal box shelf plate, FROM STRATFORD ON AVON WEST, BACK PLATFORM ROAD. Engraved brass, 4¾"x1½". £100-200 - Sold for £210.

Lot 477 A worksplate, W.G. BAGNALL LTD, No 2785, from a War Department Austerity 0-6-0ST No 75262 built by Bagnall in September 1945 and stored new at Longmoor. It was taken into LNER stock in June 1946, becoming their Class J94 No 8051 and later BR 68051. At Darlington by January 1948 and later Newport NER, York North and West Hartlepool, returning at the end to Darlington from where it was withdrawn on 29 June 1964 and sold for scrap to M. Baum at Middlesbrough. Cast brass, 8"x5½", in ex loco condition. £150-300 - Sold for £260.

Lot 479 A smokebox numberplate, 8709, from a GWR 5700 Class 0-6-0PT built by Beyer Peacock, Works No 6689, in February 1931. A long time Laira engine, it finished its days at Pontypool Road from where it was withdrawn in the week ending 29 September 1962 and cut up at Caerphilly Works in the four weeks ending 23 February 1963. Ex loco condition. £250-400 - Sold for £500.

Lot 480 A Great North of Scotland Railway four aspect handlamp complete with interior fittings and embossed brass company nameplate. The top is plated, TURRIFF, a station on the Macduff branch. Repainted. £150-300 - Sold for £220 to commission or postal bidder number 705.

Lot 481 A shedplate 88J Aberdare (September 1960 to March 1965). This ex GWR shed was originally coded 86J. Under its new code it housed nearly 50 locos. The front repainted. £100-200 - Sold for £130 to commission or postal bidder number 4321.

Lot 484 A worksplate, JOHN FOWLER, 17684, cast brass, 12"x8", the front repainted. We have been reliably informed that this is actually a tender plate from a 2ft gauge 0-4-2 tender engine, Works No 17683, supplied by Fowler in November 1927 to Queensland Machinery Co for Racecourse Central Sugar Co in Tasmania. When Fowler supplied tender locos the tenders received separate works numbers to the locos and the tender supplied with this loco received the next works number. £100-200 - Sold for £260 to commission or postal bidder number 926.

Lot 485 A destination plate, SANDOWN, from the Waterloo station departure indicator. Enamel on wooden block, overall 17½" long, a little chipping above the letter A. £150-300 - Sold for £1200 to commission or postal bidder number 1128.

Lot 489 A worksplate, BALDWIN, 72669, 1946, from a 3ft 6ins gauge 2-8-2, one of six ordered by The United Fruit Company for the Compania Bananera De Costa Rica to a design based on the Denver & Rio Grande K36 Class of 1925. The UFC ordered many like this for its Central America lines. It is now preserved at Palma Sur in Costa Rica. Cast brass, 14½"x9¾", the front repainted. £250-400 - Sold for £460.

Lot 490 A BR(S) totem sign, LITTLEHAMPTON, (f/f), the terminus of the route from Horsham and Ford. Edge chips just into the green in the upper and lower panel. £250-400 - Sold for £360.

Lot 491 A smokebox numberplate, 6830, from the GWR 6800 Grange Class 4-6-0, BUCKENHILL GRANGE, built at Swindon in August 1937 and named after the large house at Bromyard. A long time St Philips Marsh engine, it moved in January 1962 to Penzance and then Oxley from where it was withdrawn in the week ending 9 October 1965 and despatched for scrap to George Cohen at Kingsbury on 21 January 1966. Ex loco condition. £500-800 - Sold for £1350.

Lot 493 A shedplate 72F Wadebridge (1950 to September 1963). This ex LSWR shed was home to only 5 locos, which included the 3 2-4-0 WT 30585 to 30587. It was transferred to the WR and eventually became 84E. It closed in October 1964. Repainted. £600-900 - Sold for £740 to commission or postal bidder number 1650.

Lot 499 A worksplate, ANDREW BARCLAY, 1441, 1919, from a standard gauge 0-4-0ST named HUSSAR which went new to the Stafford Coal & Iron Co Ltd. Circa 1939 it moved to Settle, Speakman & Co Ltd at Queenborough, Kent, and was scrapped on site in August 1962 by M. Lynch & Co of Strood.
