| Lot 278 | A nameplate, EARL OF DUCIE, which was first carried by the GWR 3200 (later 9000) Earl Class 4-4-0 No 3211 (9011 from August 1946) built at Swindon in March 1937, using parts from the Bulldog Class 4-4-0 No 3415, and named after the Earl who lived at Tortworth Court in South Gloucestershire. In 1937 the GWR decided to remove the Earl names from the 4-4-0s and transfer these to recently built 4073 Castle Class 4-6-0s and No 5054 (named Lamphey Castle when built in June 1936) was renamed EARL OF DUCIE in September 1937. Allocated to Cardiff Canton by January 1948 and later Bristol Bath Road, Old Oak Common, Carmarthen, Neath Court Sart, Llanelly, Hereford, Worcester and Gloucester from where it was withdrawn in the week ending 24 October 1964 and cut up at Swindon Works. The bottom of the splasher of this left hand plate clearly shows where the radius has been altered to accommodate the larger driving wheels of the Castle Class engine. £7000-10000 |
