A worksplate, LONDON NORTH EASTERN RAILWAY Co, No 1864, DONCASTER 1937, from the LNER A4 Class 4-6-2 No 4462, named GREAT SNIPE after the long-billed British bird when built in November 1937. It was renamed WILLIAM WHITELAW at a wartime meeting of the Directors at York on 24 July 1941 where the new nameplates were unveiled by the former Company Chairman in person. Renumbered as No 4 in August 1946, then E4 in January 1948, it became BR 60004 the following May. A long time Haymarket engine, it moved in May 1963 to Aberdeen Ferryhill where it worked on the Aberdeen to Glasgow expresses. Withdrawn from Ferryhill on 17 July 1966, it was sold for scrap to Motherwell Machinery & Scrap at Wishaw. Fully engraved brass, 13½"x7¾", the front polished. £5000-7000 |
