An attractive mid to late 19th century 14" mahogany drop-case fusee clock possibly of Furness Railway origin, and recovered from Harrington along with much other railway material. Overall height: 26¼". Box with shaped, glazed, brass-edged pendulum window and fan-carved ears. Side and bottom doors replaced, case stop and section of backboard missing. Right side of box with pairs of pin holes neither from an LMSR number plate. Dial with the shadow of Spittall, Whitehaven, and joined to the movement by a false plate. Replaced, undersized spun bezel with clip-in sight ring. Replaced 20th century chain fusee movement in need of cleaning, between plain rectangular plates with slave drive and requiring work. John Spittall born in Whitehaven about 1834 son of James a clockmaker, worked in Whitehaven all his life, a supplier or contractor to the Furness and possibly other local railway companies. Complete with pendulum with 4 inch bob and cranked winder. £400-600 |
