A worksplate, LONDON NORTH EASTERN RAILWAY, 1873, DONCASTER, 1938, from the LNER A4 Class 4-6-2 No 4500 built in April 1938 and originally named GARGANEY after a type of duck but renamed SIR RONALD MATTHEWS after the Chairman of the LNER Board of Directors following a Director's meeting in London on 27 April 1939. It received the prestigious No 1 in 1946, becoming BR 60001. From new always a Gateshead engine, it was withdrawn from there on 12 October 1964 and received for scrap by the breakers Hughes Bolckow at Blyth on 10 December 1964. Fully engraved brass, 13¼"x7½", the front lightly polished, the back rim neatly stamped with loco details. £5000-8000 |
