Lot 1 A BR(S) poster header, SPECIAL NOTICES, an unusual fully flanged example. Enamel, 32"x4", a couple of small rim chips. £150-300 - Sold for £440.

Lot 2 A smokebox numberplate, 1022, from the GWR 1000 Class County 4-6-0, COUNTY OF NORTHAMPTON, built at Swindon in December 1946. Allocated to Penzance by January 1948 and later Laira, Chester, Hereford and Shrewsbury from where it was withdrawn in September 1962 and despatched to T.W. Ward of Broughton Lane for scrap on 12 December 1963. The front repainted. £1000-1500 - Sold for £5000.

Lot 3 A signal box name board, WELWYN NORTH, from the southern end of the East Coast main line. Notably the box had only one name board. Cast letters on wood, length 66¼", in original condition. £250-400 - Sold for £820.

Lot 4 A Great Central Railway Steamships silver plated sugar bowl, by Walker and Hall, the side marked with the company coat of arms. £100-200 - Sold for £60.

Lot 5 A GWR signal lever plate, 40, UP CRUMLIN BRANCH ADV'C'D START'G, engraved brass, 5½" length. £150-300 - Sold for £660.

Lot 6 A BR(Sc) double royal poster, WEST HIGHLAND LINE, NEAR ARISAIG, View of Eigg and Rhum, by William Douglas McLeod (1892-1963). Laid down to conserve. (B12763) £200-350 - Sold for £260.

Lot 7 A BR(S) doorplate, STATION MASTER, (f/f). Enamel 18"x6", a few minor surface blemishes and small flake from lower left screw hole. £150-300 - Sold for £270.

Lot 8 A shedplate, 87K Swansea Victoria (1949 to August 1959). This ex LNWR shed, formally coded 4A by the LMS, became part of the WR in 1949, when it was home to 50 locos. It retained a substantial allocation of 55 locos right up to closure. The front repainted. £150-300 - Sold for £160.

Lot 9 A BR(W) signal box nameboard, BROMSGROVE SOUTH, from the box at the foot of the Lickey Incline. Embossed aluminium, length 56", in original condition. £200-350 - Sold for £190.

Lot 10 A Spanish Railways worksplate, SAINT-LEONARD, LIEGE, 1879, 1916, from a 5ft 6ins gauge 2-8-0 No 462 built for the FC Del Norte, at that time the largest railway company in Spain. On nationalisation of the Spanish railways in 1941 as RENFE, it became RENFE No 140-2129. Engraved brass, 13¼"x9", the face lightly polished. £350-500 - Sold for £580.

Lot 11 A Tyers single line tablet, BARNSTAPLE-PILTON BRIDGE, (brass/steel). The first section on the Lynton and Barnstaple Railway, Pilton being adjacent to the company's loco shed and sidings. The famous route closed in 1935. £600-900 - Sold for £3000 to commission or postal bidder number 3451.

Lot 12 A BR(W) totem sign, ABERYSTWYTH, (h/f), the terminus of the Cambrian route from Dovey Junction. A couple of face chips and edge chips restored. £500-800 - Sold for £1200 to commission or postal bidder number 8289.

Lot 13 A large McKenzie & Holland signal finial, cast iron with zinc spike, 35½" tall, repainted. £150-300 - Sold for £50.

Lot 14 A pair of Great Western Railway bicycle lamps with small spirit can, contained in their original steel carrying box, each item stamped GWR. Overall 10"x5½"x4½". £150-300 - Sold for £260.

Lot 15 A BR(E) totem sign, SILVERTOWN, (f/f), from the Stratford to North Woolwich branch. Excellent condition. £800-1200 - Sold for £3000.

Lot 16 A worksplate, SENTINEL-CAMMELL, 7810, from a shaft-drive steam railcar for the LNER, delivered new in October 1929 and numbered 311. Named QUICKSILVER after an old stage coach that ran in LNER territory. Renumbered 31071 in October 1931. Spent its whole life in the Scottish Area, initially at Stirling, with spells at both Eastfield and St. Margarets. Withdrawn from Stirling on 3rd October 1947. Cast brass, 5"x9¾", the front lightly polished. £300-500 - Sold for £1400.

Lot 17 A Tyers No.6 single line tablet, WADEBRIDGE-PADSTOW, (brass/steel), the final section of the North Cornwall line from Okehampton which closed in 1966. £350-500 - Sold for £1100.

Lot 18 A worksplate, LONDON & NORTH EASTERN RAILWAY, 65751, GATESHEAD, 1905, from a North Eastern Railway Class P2, LNER J26 Class, 0-6-0 No 1670 built at Gateshead in April 1905, renumbered 5751 in 1946, becoming BR 65751. A long time Newport engine, it moved to the new Thornaby shed in June 1958 when Newport closed. Withdrawn from Thornaby on 8 January 1962, it was cut up at Darlington Works. Cast brass 9"x5", in ex loco condition. £150-300 - Sold for £360.

Lot 19 A LNER seat back plate, MELROSE, from the Waverley route which closed in 1969. Cast iron, length 25¾", the front repainted. £300-500 - Sold for £820 to commission or postal bidder number 4059.

Lot 20 A North British Railway signal box instrument plate, ST VIGEANS JUNCTION, a box north of Arbroath, where the route to Forfar left the main line to Aberdeen. Engraved brass, 4¾"x½". £80-120 - Sold for £80.

Lot 21 A Southern Railway target sign, RAVENSBOURNE, from the Nunhead to Shortlands Junction route. Minor edge chips, the sign retains its original backboard with brass screws and washers, excellent condition. £200-350 - Sold for £560.

Lot 22 A LNER destination plate, STRATFORD, from the North Woolwich departure board. Enamel, 23"x2¾", edge chipping. £100-200 - Sold for £340.

Lot 23 A Bulpitts ships lamp with brass body and 1917 makers plate. The lamp is glazed on three sides and is complete with its brass slide in vessel and burner, marked Bulpitts 1915. The wick can be adjusted by means of a key being inserted into the burner handle via a small vertical sliding door, the key attached to the body by a brass chain. An unusual design, 16" tall. £100-200 - Sold for £250.

Lot 24 A single line key token, BORTH-ABERYSTWYTH, (alloy), the final section of the Cambrian route from Dovey Junction. £100-200 - Sold for £130.

Lot 25 The George Cross, awarded posthumously to Driver Wallace Oakes. On 5th June 1965 Driver Oakes was on the footplate of Britannia Class locomotive 70051, Firth of Forth, with a Euston to Carlisle relief train. Approaching Winsford at 55 mph a severe blowback occurred, enveloping the cab in smoke and flames. With complete disregard for his own safety, Oakes remained at the controls and brought the train to a halt. He suffered severe burns and died a week later from his injuries. The medal was introduced by King George VI and is the highest civilian honour. Driver Oakes was the fifth of six railwayman to receive the George Cross, three being awarded during the war, while Wallace Oakes and John Axon were more recent recipients (during the final decade of the steam era), the last was to James Kennedy in 1975. The lot includes the associated bronze Carnegie Medal, for heroic endeavour to save human life, also the framed Citation from British Railways. Both medals are contained in their original cases. Lot 26 A North Lindsey Light Railway trespass notice. The line ran from Trent Junction (Frodingham) to Winteringham and Whitton on the south side of the Humber estuary. Cast iron, 20"x11¾", the front repainted. £250-400 - Sold for £720.

Lot 27 A worksplate, ARMSTRONG WHITWORTH, 470, 1922, from a Somerset & Dorset Joint Railway 0-6-0 No 59 built in April 1922, becoming LMS Class 4F No 4559 and BR 44559. It spent all is working life on the S&D at Bath from where it was withdrawn on 7 January 1963 and subsequently scrapped. Cast brass, 5¾"x4", the front repainted. £400-600 - Sold for £1650.

Lot 28 A BR(NE) totem sign, HUDDERSFIELD, (h/f), from the Leeds to Manchester main line; a number of small face chips restored. £800-1200 - Sold for £1100 to commission or postal bidder number 364.

Lot 29 A smokebox numberplate, 61072, from a LNER B1 Class 4-6-0 No 1072 built by the North British Locomotive Co, Works No 25828, in September 1946. Always based in Scotland, it was allocated to Haymarket by January 1948 and later Thornton Junction, Dunfermline, Aberdeen Ferryhill and Dundee Tay Bridge from where it was withdrawn on 1 May 1967 and despatched for scrap to Motherwell Machinery & Scrap at Wishaw on 19 August 1967. In ex loco condition. £400-600 - Sold for £840.

Lot 30 An advertising sign, Orange Luxury Coaches to Southampton and Bournemouth from Kings Cross and West London, enamel, 20"x30", edge chips, otherwise excellent. £200-350 - Sold for £340.

Lot 31 A GWR cabside numberplate, 1141, from a former Swansea Harbour Trust standard gauge 0-4-0ST built by Peckett, works No 1053, in June 1906, SHT No 11. After the Trust was absorbed by the GWR in July 1923, it became GWR No 929 and was renumbered 1141 in March 1948. Allocated to the ex Rhondda & Swansea Bay Railway shed Danygraig, from where it was withdrawn on 18 July 1952 and cut up at Swindon Works in the four weeks ending 4 October 1952. Cast brass, the front repainted. £500-800 - Sold for £900.

Lot 32 A BR(S) direction sign, ASHWATER STATION, from the North Cornwall line between Okehampton and Padstow which closed in 1966. This wayside station on the Halwill to Launceston section retained its traditional LSWR platform lamps and Southern concrete station signs until the end, so a rare opportunity to acquire this sign which stood at the station entrance. Enamel, 52¾"x11¾", in excellent condition. £600-900 - Sold for £1100.

Lot 33 A London Brighton & South Coast Railway Sykes butterfly banner repeater with numberplate, 42, brass case, 4" diameter. £100-200 - Sold for £480 to commission or postal bidder number 1183.

Lot 34 A London & Birmingham Railway chair with upholstered seat, the back rail inlaid in ebony with the initials, L&B, the underside branded L&NWR Co. The chair was purchased from Collectors Corner. £300-500 - Sold for £560.

Lot 35 A shed plate, 34G Finsbury Park (April 1960 to May 1973, with final closure 1983). This ER diesel depot, was famous for its nurturing of the popular Class 55 Deltics. Ex loco condition. £100-200 - Sold for £300 to commission or postal bidder number 221.

Lot 36 An LNER lamp tablet, TYNEMOUTH, (f/f) from the North Tyne loop line. Enamel, 16"x5", minor rim chips only. £150-300 - Sold for £580 to commission or postal bidder number 3634.

Lot 37 A single line key token, BARNSTAPLE Jc.B-BARNSTAPLE TOWN, (alloy), from the Ilfracombe branch which closed in 1971. The section included the Taw Viaduct crossing the river on a ninety degree curve. £150-300 - Sold for £460.

Lot 38 A LNER shedplate, LANGWITH. This ex GCR shed housed 60 locos which carried this style of plate in the cab roof from the mid 1920s sometimes well in to BR days. Enamel, 9¾"x1½", minor chips at fixings. £300-500 - Sold for £980 to commission or postal bidder number 3224.

Lot 39 An LNER double royal poster, ULLSWATER, English Lake Land, by E W Haslehust. £150-300 - Sold for £260.

Lot 40 A platform lamp name glass, DONNINGTON ON BAIN, from the Louth to Bardney route which closed in 1960, this station closing in 1951. Glass with painted lettering to the rear, 12½"x3", a minor edge chip to the left end. £80-120 - Sold for £300 to commission or postal bidder number 236.

Lot 41 An East African Railways locomotive nameplate, MOUNT KILIMANJARO, 19340 FEET, from an EAR Class 59 4-8-2+2-8-4 Beyer Garratt No 5928 built by Beyer Peacock, Works No 7700, in 1955 and named after the highest African mountain. The Class just survived into 1980, by then part of Kenya Railways. Cast brass, length 64", the front repainted. The nameplate is accompanied by its brass cabside and front numberplates, 5928, the one 27½"x8¾", the other 19¾"x6½" and brass EAR letters as attached to the bunker. (4) £4000-6000 - Sold for £4500.

Lot 42 A BR(M) totem sign, DOLGELLEY, (f/f), from the Ruabon to Barmouth Junction route, excellent condition. The first such example to be offered for sale at auction. £1500-2500 - Sold for £4400 to commission or postal bidder number 583.

Lot 43 A worksplate BRUSH SULZER 509, 1964, from D1738, later 47145. New to Cardiff Canton in May 1964. Unofficially named JOSTINOT at Tinsley in September 1989; later named MERDDIN EMRYS in May 1990 and renamed MYRRDDIN EMRYS in 2004. One of two Tinsley celebrity locos it was withdrawn in March 2001 then owned at various times by Fragonset, Freightliner, DRS and HNRS before being cut up by TJ Thompson at Stockton in August 2009. Cast aluminium, 9½"x5½", in ex loco condition. £250-400 - Sold for £540 to commission or postal bidder number 221.

Lot 44 An LNER lamp tablet, ROTHBURY, from the terminus of the North British branch from Scotsgap on the Wansbeck line. The station closed in 1952. Enamel, 16"x5", in excellent condition. £300-500 - Sold for £360.

Lot 45 A LMS double royal poster, DOVEDALE, THE DERBYSHIRE DALES, by Frank Sherwin. Folds, laid down to conserve, tape marks at base. £200-350 - Sold for £460.

Lot 46 A Tyers single line tablet, WILLOUGHBY-SUTTON-ON-SEA, (brass) from the southern end of the East Lincolnshire loop to Mablethorpe and Louth, the section closing in 1970. £250-400 - Sold for £900.

Lot 47 A Southern Railway destination plate, CLAPHAM JUNC, from the departure indicator at Waterloo. Enamel, 17½"x2¼", on a wooden block, a chip to left. £80-120 - Sold for £200.

Lot 48 A Lancashire & Yorkshire and North Eastern Railways ship captains cap badge used on the Hull to Zeebrugge service which commenced in 1906, operating in the summer months only by a single steamer, the LYR's Duke of Clarence. This joint service was discontinued at the outbreak of the First World War in 1914. £80-120 - Sold for £230.

Lot 49 A single line key token, BEWDLEY NORTH-BEWDLEY SOUTH BACK ROAD, (alloy) used on the station avoiding line on the Severn Valley route. The key with its alloy/steel holder and hoop. £150-300 - Sold for £460.

Lot 50 A (GWR) cabside numberplate, 7902, from the 6959 Modified Hall Class 4-6-0 EATON MASCOT HALL built at Swindon in March 1949 and named after the Hall near Shrewsbury. Allocated new to Old Oak Common on 31 March 1949, it spent all its working life there until withdrawal on 1 June 1964. It was cut up at Swindon Works on 18 September 1964. Cast brass, in ex loco condition, a little distortion at the right end. £1000-1500 - Sold for £1300.

Lot 51 A Midland Railway signal box shelf plate, LUFFENHAM JUNCTION, from the Stamford to Oakham section of the Leicester to Peterborough route. Engraved brass, 5½"x3¼". £80-120 - Sold for £100.

Lot 52 A GWR three aspect copper top handlamp stamped GWR, SWINDON, SB, and plated, 7548, complete with interior, vessel stamped SB, GWR and burner GWR. The lamp repainted. £100-200 - Sold for £230.

Lot 53 A BR(M) double royal poster, LLANDUDNO, by E.W. Fenton, rolled. (LM9353) £100-200 - Sold for £150.

Lot 54 A worksplate, NORTH BRITISH LOCO Co, HYDE PARK, 24361, 1936, from a LMS Class 4 2-6-4T No 2605, BR 42605. Allocated new to Aston on 7 December 1936, its later sheds included Uttoxeter for over ten years and Stoke from where it was withdrawn in the week ending 19 December 1964 and sold for scrap to Birds Commercial Motors at Long Marston. Engraved brass, 6½" diameter, lightly cleaned but unpolished. £150-300 - Sold for £580.

Lot 55 A LNER doorplate, BOOKING OFFICE. Cast iron, 14¾"x4¾", the front repainted. £100-200 - Sold for £60.

Lot 56 A BR(S) totem sign, EARLSWOOD, (f/f), from the Brighton main line. A little mottling , but good colour. £250-400 - Sold for £360.

Lot 57 A North Eastern Railway three aspect handlamp with brass plate, SALTBURN, and NER embossed plate. The station was on the coastal route from Middlesborough to Whitby. Repainted. £150-300 - Sold for £200.

Lot 58 A shedplate 89C Machynlleth (1948 to September 1963). This ex Cambrian Railways shed was home to 50 locos in the 1950s. Recoded 6F in 1963, it closed in December 1966. Repainted. £100-200 - Sold for £240.

Lot 59 A group of GWR signal lever plates, from Lapworth, wordings include, Spring Points Slotted In Branch, Facing To Loop, Up Main Home Clear. Engraved brass, length, 6", 6¼", 6¾". (3) £100-200 - Sold for £580.

Lot 60 A smokebox numberplate, 46459, from a (LMS) Class 2 2-6-0 built at Crewe and allocated new to Crewe North on 23 May 1950. Its later sheds included Penrith, Workington, Bescot, Rugby and Nuneaton from where it was withdrawn in the week ending 2 October 1965 and taken for scrap by Cashmores at Great Bridge on 8 December 1965. In ex loco condition. £300-500 - Sold for £740.

Lot 61 A BR(E) totem sign, WOOD GREEN, (h/f), from the southern end of the East Coast Main Line, on the approach to Kings Cross. One minor edge chip, just into the blue. £400-600 - Sold for £1150.

Lot 62 A worksplate, ROBERT STEPHENSON & HAWTHORNS LTD, 7178, 1944, from a standard gauge Austerity type 0-6-0ST built for the War Department, WD No 71524, and delivered in January 1945 to the Ministry of Fuel & Power for loan to The Horden Collieries Ltd, Horden, County Durham, where it carried the number 5. Moved to Bentinck West Hartley Colliery Ltd, Pegswood Colliery, Northumberland in 1946, still on loan from the Ministry of Fuel & Power, still numbered 5. The Colliery passed to the National Coal Board on 1 January 1947 and the locomotive was purchased from the WD in May 1947 when it was moved to Ashington Colliery, Northumberland and given the number 27. Fitted with a Giesl ejector November 1967 and transferred to Shilbottle Colliery, Northumberland in February 1968. In October 1968 it made its final move to Whittle Colliery, Northumberland, where it was scrapped in November 1969. Cast iron, 13"x8½", in ex loco condition. £150-300 - Sold for £290.

Lot 63 A BR(W) doorplate, PARCELS, (flangeless). Enamel, 18"x3½" a few minor blemishes. £150-300 - Sold for £200.00.

Lot 64 An East African Railways locomotive numberplate, 2424, from a metre gauge 4-8-0 built by Vulcan Foundry, Works No 3791, in 1925 for Uganda Railway, their GD Class No 185. In 1926 it became part of Kenya-Uganda Railway still as No 185. On the formation of East African Railways in 1948 it became their Class 24 No 2424. Cast brass, 17"x6¼", the front repainted. £100-200 - Sold for £130.

Lot 65 A signal box name board, MARSHMOOR, from the southern end of the East Coast main line. Cast letters on wood, length 55½", in original condition. £250-400 - Sold for £400 to commission or postal bidder number 7416.

Lot 66 A worksplate, HAWTHORN LESLIE, 2490, 1901, from a standard gauge 0-4-0ST new to John Brown & Co. Ltd, Rotherham Main Colliery, Canklow, Yorkshire West Riding as ATLAS No 16. Passed to the NCB with the Colliery on 1 January 1947. Later renumbered No 15. Scrapped on site around October 1965. Cast brass, 12¼"x7¾", the front repainted. £300-500 - Sold for £270.

Lot 67 An original painting, Much Wenlock Station, by Norman Elford. A view of GWR 5167 arriving on a short branch train. 18"x12", mounted and framed, overall 24"x18". £500-800 - This lot did not sell at the auction. Lot 68 A GWR cabside numberplate, 7423, from a 7400 Class 0-6-0PT built at Swindon in May 1937. A long time Aberdare engine, it was withdrawn from there in the week ending 4 July 1964 and sold for scrap to Birds Commercial Motors at Morriston the following 24 August. Cast iron, repainted. £350-500 - Sold for £350.

Lot 69 A cash bag, GWR, OLTON , from a station on the Leamington to Birmingham main line just north of Solihull. Leather with engraved brass plate. £100-200 - Sold for £50.

Lot 70 A BR(E) platform sign from Barking station, listing platform numbers and directions for trains to St Pancras, Fenchurch Street, Southend, Upminster, Metropolitan and District lines, (f/f). Enamel, 72"x27", edge chips. £100-200 - Sold for £420 to commission or postal bidder number 945.

Lot 71 A cabside number set E3003, from BRCW Class 81 which became 81002. New to Longsight in February 1960; withdrawn from Willesden in October 1990 and now preserved at Barrow Hill roundhouse. Originally riveted to the cabside, now screwed to a blue wooden board. Overall size, 33"x9". £250-400 - Sold for £390 to commission or postal bidder number 3416.

Lot 72 A small carriage board, ABERDEEN-LAURENCEKIRK, used on local services on the main line south of Aberdeen. Wood, 28"x3¼", in original condition. £80-120 - Sold for £140.

Lot 73 A shedplate, 84K Chester (GWR) (1948 to February 1958), then Wrexham Rhosddu (February 1958 to January 1960). The ex GWR shed at Chester had around 55 locos while using this code. It was transferred to the London Midland, becoming 6E. The ex GCR shed at Wrexham Rhosddu, formerly 6E, exchanged places with Chester, and also had around 55 locos. It closed to steam in January 1960. Repainted. £100-200 - Sold for £160.

Lot 74 A North Eastern Railway cash bag, NER, PASSR DEPT, GOOLE, from the Doncaster to Hull main line. Leather with engraved brass plate. £80-120 - Sold for £160.

Lot 75 An LMS enamel advert, LMS, FOR FURNITURE REMOVALS, CONSULT THE STATION MASTER, probably fixed to a riser on a footbridge. Enamel, 59"x2½", edge chipping repainted, lettering largely unaffected. £100-200 - Sold for £420.00.

Lot 76 A carriage print, EDALE, DERBYSHIRE, by Jack Merriott, from the LMR(A) series. £80-120 - Sold for £120 to commission or postal bidder number 524.

Lot 77 A BR(S) totem sign, ARUNDEL, (f/f), from the Horsham to Littlehampton route. Flange chips at far right and left, both repainted. £350-500 - Sold for £620 to commission or postal bidder number 1380.

Lot 78 A presentation cigar holder, To Thos Walker by The Workmen of No.1 Ballast Train GNR and a few Friends, Leeds, 13 Sept 1883. Hallmarked silver with floral decoration, length 5". £100-200 - Sold for £230.

Lot 79 A smokebox numberplate, 9777, from a GWR 8750 Class 0-6-0PT built at Swindon in March 1936. Allocated by January 1948 to Landore where it spent most of its BR days before moving in June 1961 to Neath Court Sart from where it was withdrawn on 6 May 1964 and sold from site to Birds Commercial Motors at Bynea on 22 June 1964. The front repainted. £250-400 - Sold for £290 to commission or postal bidder number 7299.

Lot 80 A Midland Railway signal lever plate, INTERMEDIATE DISTANT FROM ALDRIDGE, from the Castle Bromwich to Wolverhampton route. Engraved brass, 4"x5". £50-80 - Sold for £120.

Lot 81 A Metropolitan & Great Central Joint Railway, warning notice, Beware of Trains, cast iron, 27"x14¼", in original condition. £150-300 - Sold for £660.

Lot 82 A Southern Railway target sign, HALWILL, from the Okehampton to Bude and Padstow route; the station closed in 1966. Edge chips, otherwise excellent. £1000-1500 - Sold for £2600.

Lot 83 A smokebox numberplate, 42827, from a LMS Class 4 2-6-0 No 13127 built at Horwich in 1929, renumbered 2827 in 1934, becoming BR 42827. Allocated to Nottingham by January 1935 and later Spital Bridge, Royston, Saltley for many years and finally Birkenhead from where it was withdrawn in the week ending 21 August 1965 and despatched for scrap to Birds Commercial Motors at Morriston on 9 December 1965. The front repainted. £300-500 - Sold for £420.

Lot 84 A signal box nameboard, ASHINGTON, from the Bedlington to Newbiggin route. Cast letters on wood, partial loss of beading to right end, length 54", the front repainted. £100-200 - Sold for £500 to commission or postal bidder number 2362.

An unusual design of long-boiler locomotive used extensively at Consett. Later transferred to Derwenthaugh locomotive shed, Swalwell, returning to Consett in October 1947. Scrapped circa June 1960. Lot 90 A Southern Railway signal box plunger with enamel ring, COLEFORD JUNCTION, a notable location west of Exeter where the routes to Ilfracombe and Plymouth diverge. £150-300 - Sold for £420.

Lot 91 A nameplate, BRITISH HONDURAS, from the LMS Jubilee Class 7P 4-6-0 No 5602 built by the North British Locomotive Co, Works No 24160, in April 1935 and named on 7 May 1936 after the former British Colony on the eastern coast of Central America now known as Belize. Allocated new to Crewe North on 23 January 1935 and then Edge Hill, it spent most of its career at former Midland Railway sheds including Derby, Bristol Barrow Road and Millhouses with its final three years at Newton Heath, Wakefield and Holbeck from where it was withdrawn on 18 March 1965 and cut up by Drapers at Hull on 2 and 3 July 1965. £7000-9000 - Sold for £13200 to commission or postal bidder number 8283.

Lot 92 A GWR double royal poster, MINEHEAD, by Pickering. The poster is presented in a quality wooden frame. £300-500 - Sold for £680 to commission or postal bidder number 4813.

Lot 93 A late 19th or early 20th century Caledonian Railway, German-made, 12" fusee drop-case clock obtained by the vendor from St. Enoch station. Overall height: 22½" inches. Solid oak case in good restored condition. Box with bottom door, single side door (replaced, with clumsy fixing mechanism) and glazed, oval pendulum window. Ogee moulded dial surround of four piece construction. Dial with minor damage, written Caledonian Railway Co., slightly rubbed, the rear with several pencil notes from repairers or owners, the earliest dated 1933. Spun brass bezel with sight ring now soldered in place. Wire fusee movement between rectangular, screwed plates, the rear stamped W&H Sch indicating the makers Winterhalder & Hoffmeier and with their characteristic features. Complete with Pendulum and winder. £500-800 - Sold for £580.

Lot 113 A smokebox numberplate, 42224, from a LMS Class 4 2-6-4T No 2224 built at Derby and allocated new to Plaistow on 16 April 1946, becoming BR 42224. It worked on the London Tilbury & Southend route, allocated also to Tilbury and Shoeburyness, until displaced in 1962, moving to Stoke, Chester, Fleetwood and Lostock Hall from where it was withdrawn in the week ending 21 January 1967 and sold for scrap to George Cohen at Kettering. Lot 116 An industrial locomotive nameplate SENTINEL, together with its matching worksplate SENTINEL 9547, from a 200HP standard gauge chain-drive Sentinel steam locomotive new in 1952 to Tunnel Portland Cement Co. Ltd, Pitstone Works, Ivinghoe, Buckinghamshire. Scrapped on site by R. Fenwick & Co. Ltd circa July 1967. Both cast brass, face restored and mounted on a wooden board painted in the locomotive's livery of dark green lined in black, overall 29½"x17½", the nameplate 26½"x8¾", the worksplate 5"x4". Lot 118 A shedplate 89A Oswestry (1948 to January 1961), then Shrewsbury (January 1961 to September 1963). The former Cambrian Railway shed had an allocation of around 50 locos including 6 Manors during the 1950s. It was recoded 89D, then 6E and closed in January 1965. The ex GWR/LNWR Joint shed at Shrewsbury, formerly 84G, had an allocation of 100 locos including Counties, Castles, Manors and Halls when using this code. Recoded 6D, it closed to steam in September 1967. Repainted. £100-200 - Sold for £80.

Lot 120 An early LB&SCR Pullman car notice referring to the use of the Emergency Bell Pull. The notice was used in an early car and was found in a wall partition at Preston Park Pullman Car Sheds. Later renumbered 70044, then 823 and finally 220. Operated at a number of Army depots until loaned in May 1975 to Nobel Explosives Co. Ltd at Annan and purchased by them in May 1980. Acquired by Tarmac Ltd about 1995 and moved to their yard at Newmains, Lanarkshire, moving again in 1998 to Tarmac’s Hayes Depot, Middlesex. Lot 133 A smokebox numberplate, 5353, from a GWR 53XX Class 2-6-0 built at Swindon in August 1918. It was modified in January 1928 by transferring more weight to the front end and renumbered 8353 but was re-converted to its original condition and had its original numbered restored in June 1944. Allocated to Neyland by January 1948, it moved in September 1953 to Carmarthen from where it was withdrawn on 2 May 1960 and cut up at Swindon Works in the week ending 18 June 1960. Lot 134 A GWR 4½" early 20th century composite French brass drum clock. Overall height 4¾" excluding handle and feet. The brass case stamped 4843, the lid 3529 and the movement 4845. 8 day spring driven movement with platform escapement and stamped with a lion indicating the makers Duverdrey & Bloquel. Moon hands. The vitreous enamel dial written G.W.R. Kay & Co. Paris, indicating its origin, Kays were based in Worcester. Complete with combined winder/hand setter. £100-200 - Sold for £320.

Lot 135 A worksplate SENTINEL, SOREFAME, ANDORA, 1966. From a 5ft 6ins gauge Portuguese Railways Class 1150 0-6-0DH No 1186. Thirty-six were built by Sorefame under licence from Sentinel. They were given progressive numbers 462-497 by Sorefame but not given any numbers by Sentinel. Cast brass 13¾"x9¾", the front repainted, the back cleaned and stamped 1186. £250-400 - Sold for £340.

Lot 137 A worksplate, YORKSHIRE ENGINE CO, 2800, 1962, from a standard gauge Janus type 0-6-0DE new to GKN Steel Co Ltd at Brymbo Colliery Ironworks & Steelworks at Wrexham where it spent all its working life. The owners became part of British Steel Corporation (Holdings) Ltd in July 1967, then became part of Guest Keen & Nettlefolds Ltd trading as Brymbo Steelworks Ltd in March 1986 and were taken over by United Engineering Steels Ltd the following month. This loco was sold to Booth Roe Metals Ltd at Rotherham in 1992, some time after 11 January. Cast brass, 11"x6", the front repainted. £100-200 - Sold for £130.

Allocated to Crewe South by January 1935 and later Birkenhead, Chester, Tebay, Stoke, Uttoxeter and finally Crewe Works where it operated as a Works shunter for nearly five years until withdrawal in the week ending 8 October 1966. Allocated new to Danygraig on 23 May 1952, it moved four years later to Swansea East Dock from where it was withdrawn on 13 February 1952 after a working life of less than ten years and sold for scrap to Cashmores at Newport on 22 May 1962. Lot 145 A worksplate, LONDON & NORTH EASTERN RAILWAY, 4925, DARLINGTON WORKS 1937, from a LNER J39 Class 0-6-0 No 1577, not built at Darlington as stated on the plate but actually by Beyer Peacock, Works No 6822, in April 1937. It was renumbered 4925 in 1946 and became BR 64925. Allocated to Darlington by January 1948 and then Blaydon and Tweedmouth where it spent its last thirteen years until withdrawal on 3 December 1962. It was cut up at Darlington Works. Cast brass, 9"x5", the front repainted. £150-300 - Sold for £120.

Allocated to Ebbw Junction by January 1948, it was transferred in 1955 to Aberbeeg where it spent most of its BR days before moving towards the end to St Philips Marsh, Cardiff East Dock, Pontypool Road and finally back to Ebbw Junction from where it was withdrawn on 7 May 1965 and sold for the scrap the following 16 June to Birds Commercial Motors at Bynea. Lot 153 An 0 gauge model, GWR 111, The Great Bear, 4-6-2. Kit built and painted to a good standard, twelve volt, two rail inner live side pick up to front driving wheels, centre wheels non flanged, a good level of detail throughout, excellent condition. £250-350 - Sold for £510.

Ltd, Vobster Quarry, Mells Road, Somerset. It was taken over with the quarry by Roads Reconstruction Ltd in January 1934 and latterly carried the number 385. Scrapped in February 1959. Lot 173 A nameplate, OVERTON GRANGE, from the GWR 6800 Grange Class 4-6-0 No 6879, the last of the Class built at Swindon in May 1939 and named after the country house to the south of Ludlow in Shropshire, now a hotel. Allocated to Oxley by January 1948, it remained there until moving to Laira in 1958 with later brief spells at Truro, St Blazey and Stourbridge. It moved in April 1960 to Tyseley where it remained until withdrawal in the week ending 16 October 1965. It was despatched for scrap to George Cohen at Kettering on 2 February 1966. £6000-8000 - Sold for £8800.

Lot 174 An LNWR hydrant plate, 6" SLUICE VALVE, 4FT, LEADING FROM RESERVOIR, referring to the water supply to Castlethorpe Troughs on the West Coast main line. Cast iron, 18½"x13", repainted. £100-200 - Sold for £80 to commission or postal bidder number 3403.

Lot 175 A smokebox numberplate, 60503, from the LNER P2 Class 2-8-2 No 2003 built at Doncaster, Works No 1836, in June 1936 with streamlined casing and named LORD PRESIDENT after the presiding judge of the Court of Session in Edinburgh. Rebuilt at Doncaster in December 1944 as a Class A2/2 4-6-2 without its streamlined casing, it was renumbered 503 in 1946 and became BR 60503. Allocated new to Haymarket where it remained until moving south of the border in November 1949 to York from where it was withdrawn on 27 November 1959 and cut up at Doncaster Works. Lot 176 A GWR brief case with buckles and brass fittings, the clasp engraved, CHIEF ACCOUNTANTS OFFICE, GWR, PADDINGTON. Overall size, 11"x12". £100-200 - Sold for £420.

Lot 177 A South African Railways cabside numberplate, 487, 6A, from a 3ft 6ins gauge Cape Government Railways 6th Class 4-6-0 No 660 built by Dubs & Co, Works No 3469, in 1897 for passenger duties on the CGR's Eastern System. It became SAR Class 6A No 487 in 1912 and the last of the class were withdrawn in 1973. Cast brass, 20¾"x14½", the front repainted. £300-500 - Sold for £320 to commission or postal bidder number 8578.

Lot 178 A BR(Sc) totem sign, NEILSTON LOW, (f/f), from the Glasgow to Barrhead and Kilmarnock route, the station closed in 1966. This is the first example to be offered for sale at auction. A little loss of shine. £350-500 - Sold for £540.

Lot 179 A worksplate, BEYER PEACOCK, REBUILT 1921,from a South Eastern & Chatham Railway D Class 4-4-0 No 247 built by Dubs & Co, Works No 4338, in April 1903. It was rebuilt and re-classified to D1 Class by Beyer Peacock, Works No 01973, in April 1921, when this plate was fitted, becoming SR 1247 and BR 31247. Allocated to Stewarts Lane by January 1948 and later Dover, Faversham, Guildford, Bricklayers Arms and Nine Elms from where it was withdrawn in the week ending 22 July 1961 and cut up at Ashford Works during the week ending 2 September 1961. Lot 186 An award cup for the Furness Railway Coupling Contest, The Ramsden Challenge Cup 1912. Won in 1912 & 1913 by Guard Wilkinson, coupling and uncoupling 15 wagons in 56.25 seconds, height 11½", together with a second cup for 1913, twenty wagons, one minute, twenty four seconds. Height 7½", each hallmarked silver. A large framed photograph of the winner accompanies this lot. (3) £250-400 - Sold for £580.

Lot 187 A mid to late 19th century Glasgow & South Western Rly. 14" pine-cased, wall-hanging, weight-driven, longcase clock used in signal boxes at Drongan and later Hurlford. Overall height: 61". Pine case originally painted, now stripped and with repairs to the hood. Trunk with full length panelled door secured by a latch and with a number of indistinct notes written inside by railway workers including one from Drongan dated 1952 and several on trunk and hood noting a move to Hurlford in 1970. (Hurlford closed to passengers in 1955, remaining open for goods). Forward sliding hood secured by a large steel latch inside the trunk, with top hinged, turned, wooden bezel glazed with old glass secured by the original wooden sight ring. Movement with gut drive, between black painted (to reduce corrosion) rectangular plates joined by knopped pillars without slave drive (not required for signal box use). Now unwritten 14 inch dial with contractors label on rear marked: Drongan S/B, dial repainted 1960. Dial joined to movement by a false plate. Complete with rectangular cast Iron weight with hollow for suspension wheel, wood rod pendulum with replaced cylindrical brass cased bob and cranked winder. £700-900 - This lot did not sell at the auction. Lot 188 A worksplate, NORTH BRITISH LOCOMOTIVE Co, HYDE PARK WORKS, 24760, 1942, from a LMS Class 8F 2-8-0 No 8187 which became BR 48187. Allocated new to Motherwell on 21 April 1942 and later Toton, Hasland, Nottingham and Springs Branch from where it was withdrawn in the week ending 7 January 1967 and sold for scrap to Cashmores at Newport, taken by them on 20 May 1967. Lot 191 An industrial locomotive nameplate, PAULINE, from a standard gauge 0-4-0ST built by Hawthorn Leslie, Works No 2941, in 1912 and which went new to Bell Bros Ltd at Parson Byers Quarry, Stanhope where it spent all its working life. The Quarry was taken over by Dorman Long & Co Ltd in May 1923 and this loco remained there until withdrawal, although its disposal details are unrecorded. Lot 223 A nameplate, SIR HENRY LE FISE LAKE, with KING ARTHUR CLASS appendage below, from the Southern Railway N15 King Arthur Class 4-6-0 No 803, BR 30803, built at Eastleigh in November 1926 and named after one of three Knights of the Round Table who, in Arthurian legend, bravely fought an enemy of King Arthur. A long time Ashford engine, it moved in 1958 to Stewarts Lane and the following year to Eastleigh from where it was withdrawn in the week ending 2 September 1961 and cut up at Eastleigh Works in the week ending 23 September. Cast brass, 52¼" long, the front repainted. The back bears the casting number, E121 and is clearly stamped with the engine number 803. £8000-12000 - Sold for £8600.

Lot 227 A GWR cabside numberplate, 5031, from the 4073 Castle Class 4-6-0 TOTNES CASTLE built at Swindon in May 1934 and named after the mediaeval Castle in the Devon market town. A long time Stafford Road favourite, it spent virtually all its BR days there before moving at the very end to Oxley from where it was withdrawn on 22 October 1963 and sold for scrap to George Cohen at Morriston on 1 January 1964. Cast brass, the second two numbers lightly polished, otherwise superb original condition. £3000-4000 - Sold for £3000.

Lot 228 A mid-20th century BR (S) 8" oak-cased roundhead clock used at Woking. Overall height: 11¼". Case of typical late, all-solids construction. Dial written with standard BR(S) / Walker details but with some damage and writing including the clock number rubbed off. Rear of dial marked BR(S) 11598, (the clock’s number). Spun brass bezel with clip-in sight ring. Wire fusee movement between rectangular plates, rear plate stamped 24526 Made in England. Records show it was supplied by Stockall & Marples in 1958 and used in Woking Yard. Lot 232 A nameplate, GLENCOE, from a South African Railways Class 12A 4-8-2 No 2122 built by the North British Locomotive Co, Works No 22762, in 1920 for goods traffic. It was subsequently reboilered and re-classified to Class 12AR. Initially the Class was confined to the Transvaal but during the 1960s began working in other areas, No 2122 moving to Glencoe depot from which it took its name. As the depot's most popular engine, it was always kept in immaculate condition. The class were withdrawn during the 1980s. Lot 260 A nameplate, GALTEE MORE, from a 5ft 3ins gauge Great Northern Railway of Ireland S Class 4-4-0 No 173 built by Beyer Peacock, Works No 5631, in 1913 and named after an Irish mountain. The name was removed by 1925 but reinstated when the loco was completely renewed at Dundalk Works in 1938. On the division of the GNR in October 1958 between the governments of Eire and Northern Ireland No 173 became Ulster Transport Authority No 61. It was withdrawn in 1964 and subsequently scrapped. Lot 264 A worksplate, BEYER PEACOCK, 6639, 1930, from a South African Railways 3ft 6ins gauge GL Class 4-8-2+2-8-4 Garratt No 2352. These were the most powerful steam locos to operate on the SAR. All were withdrawn by 1972 and No 2352 was returned to the UK and displayed at the Museum of Science and Industry in Manchester. Lot 265 A GWR cabside numberplate, 7779, from a 5700 Class 0-6-0PT built by Armstrong Whitworth, Works No 1135, in November 1930. Allocated to St Philips Marsh by January 1948 and later Barry, Cardiff Cathays and Radyr from where it was withdrawn on 5 October 1958 and sold to the London Transport Executive, becoming their No L93 until withdrawn for a second time in 1968 and subsequently scrapped. Lot 268 A shedplate 6D Chester Northgate (1949 to January 1960) then Shrewsbury (September 1963 to March 1967). The ex CLC shed at Chester had an allocation of just 10 locos. When the ex GWR/LNWR joint shed at Shrewsbury was transferred from the WR (formerly 84G and 89A), the LM region adorned its allocation of around 50 locos with this code. Of note were the 7 Manors used on the Cambrian Coast Express. The front repainted. £100-200 - Sold for £80.

Lot 270 An early 20th century GWR 12" mahogany drop-case fusee clock of standard GWR style in good condition. Believed to be from the HQ offices at Paddington. Overall height: 28". Dial surround of four-piece construction with replaced clip-in spun bezel. Case marked 1560 B in several places in chalk and pencil. Box with incurved base containing door closed by a spring-loaded ball latch and with a knob and two side doors with wooden latches all typical GWR features. Replaced or reproduction Ivorine number plate GWR 1560 on front of drop. Dial and movement possibly replaced. Dial repainted and written GWR Kay & Co. Makers and marked 1560 B on the rear. Lot 282 A nameplate, COUNTY OF CARDIGAN, the left hand side plate from the GWR 1000 County Class 4-6-0 No 1008 built at Swindon in December 1945 and named after the Welsh county in June 1947. After spending its early years at Old Oak Common, it moved in 1952 to Chester and later Penzance, Neyland, Shrewsbury and Swindon from where it was withdrawn on 3 October 1963 and taken for scrap by Cashmores at Newport on 20 August 1964. Length 78½", in ex loco condition. £8000-10000 - Sold for £8800.

Lot 283 A smokebox numberplate, 61040, from the LNER B1 Class 4-6-0 No 1040, ROEDEER, built by the North British Locomotive Co, Works No 25796, in April 1946. Of the forty locos in the class named after types of Antelope, this was the only one named after a British species. Allocated to Norwich by January 1948, its later sheds included Darlington, Mirfield, Low Moor and Wakefield from where it was withdrawn on 10 July 1966 and despatched for scrap to A. King at Norwich on 19 September 1966. The front repainted. £600-900 - Sold for £720.

Lot 284 A shed plate, 52J Borough Gardens (October 1958 to June 1959), then South Gosforth diesel depot (February 1964 to May 1973). In the short time this ex NER shed, situated in Gateshead, used this code it had 44 locos on its books. The code was then later adopted by the diesel depot at South Gosforth where many DMU trailers carried such plates. This style of headboard was introduced in June 1950 and continued to be used until the service was taken over by the Deltics in Summer 1962. Lot 294 A South African Railways cabside numberplate, 1284, 1, from a 3ft 6 ins gauge Natal Government Railways Class B 4-6-0 No 314 built by the North British Locomotive Co, Works No 16409, in 1904 for both passenger and goods traffic. It became SAR Class 1 No 1284 in 1912 and all were withdrawn by 1975. Cast brass, 20¾"x14½", the front cleaned but unpainted, a hairline crack top right. £300-500 - Sold for £460.

Lot 295 A depot plaque for Immingham, STAR and GARTER. A stainless steel example fitted to Class 37 37275 in December 1988 when it was named STAINLESS PIONEER. The plates including this depot plaque were removed in May 1992 and 37717 had the set fitted in March 1993. These plates were then removed in July 1996 and the depot plaques were retained at Immingham. 17½" square, in ex loco condition. £350-500 - Sold for £740.

Lot 296 A locomotive headboard, CAMBRIAN COAST EXPRESS, as carried on the through service from Paddington to Aberystwyth and Pwllheli. The title was introduced by the GWR in July 1927, withdrawn in September 1939 because of the War and reintroduced by BR in July 1951. This style of headboard, incorporating the Cambrian Railways coat-of-arms, was used from Summer 1958 up to and including the last titled run on 4 March 1967, always with steam power, and this has the distinction of being the last Western Region headboard used in service. Cast aluminium, 52½"x23" with brackets to rear; two steel plates added at each end to strengthen the plate due to cracks. The crest appears to have been broken off and reattached at some point. The board has been cleaned and restored but has plenty of knocks on the lower rim. £5000-7000 - Sold for £4000.

Lot 300 A worksplate, (GREAT NORTHERN RAILWAY), DONCASTER, 1388, 1913, from a GNR Class J22 0-6-0 No 553 built in June 1913, becoming LNER J6 Class No 3553, renumbered 4202 in 1946, BR 64202. A long time Colwick engine, it was withdrawn from there on 25 September 1958 and cut up at Doncaster Works. Engraved brass, 12¼"x7½", the company name filled but visible, the back marked with the original loco numbers. £350-500 - Sold for £440.

Lot 305 A worksplate, L.N.E.R, 67648, DONCASTER, 1935, from a LNER V1 Class 2-6-2T No 418 built at Doncaster, Works No 1824, in December 1935, renumbered 7648 in 1946, becoming BR 67648. It was re-boilered and re-classified as V3 Class in November 1959. A long time Parkhead engine, it had brief periods in its final months at Ardrossan, Kipps and Hurlford from where it was withdrawn on 25 January 1962 and cut up at Darlington Works. Lot 309 A nameplate, CHARLES DICKENS, from the BR Standard Class 7MT Britannia 4-6-2 No 70033 built at Crewe and allocated new to Holyhead on 13 December 1952. It moved the following month to Longsight where it spent seven years. Its later sheds included Trafford Park, Willesden, Crewe North and Carlisle Kingmoor from where it was withdrawn in the week ending 15 July 1967 and sold for scrap to Campbells at Airdrie on 3 October 1967. Lot 312 An early 20th century 10", North Eastern Railway, German, mahogany roundhead fusee clock used at Hull. Overall height: 13¼", in good, complete original condition, but dirty. Used in the PW Yard Office of the District Engineer, Hull. Chain fusee Winterhalder & Hoffmeier movement. Red printed NER instruction label pasted inside side door. Untouched original dial written N.E.R. 648 (which became LNER 4557, never applied to the actual clock, not unusual). Spun brass bezel with plastered sight ring. Lot 313 A shed plate, 87C Danygraig (1949 to January 1960 for steam, March 1964 totally). This ex R&SBR shed was home to an exotic collection of pre-grouping tank engines throughout its BR days when the total allocation was never more than 30 locos. Lot 319 A worksplate, NORTH BRITISH LOCOMOTIVE Co, QUEENS PARK WORKS, 22225, 1919, from a Robinson Great Central Railway type 2-8-0 built in September 1919 to Ministry of Munitions order for the Railway Operating Division of the Royal Engineers, ROD No 2135. Loaned new to the Caledonian Railway in October 1919, it returned to the ROD in August 1921 and was stored at Gretna. In February 1927 it was sold to the LNER, becoming their O4 Class No 6637. Renumbered 3888 in 1946, it became BR 63888. A long time Darnall engine, it was withdrawn from there on 1 April 1960 and cut up at Gorton Works during the week ending 18 June 1960. It became LNER D34 Class No 9503 and was renumbered 2487 in 1946, becoming BR 62487. A long time St Margarets loco, it was withdrawn from there on 10 September 1959 and sold for scrap to J N Connell at Coatbridge on 28 October 1959. Lot 327 A worksplate, GREAT NORTHERN RAILWAY, DONCASTER, 1549, 1922, from a GNR Class J23 0-6-0T No 226 built in December 1922, one of the last batch built at Doncaster before the Grouping. It became LNER J50 Class No 3226 and was renumbered 8925 in 1946, becoming BR 68925. Allocated to Ardsley by January 1948, it moved three months later to Copley Hill from where it was withdrawn on 8 January 1962 and cut up at Doncaster Works. Fully engraved brass, 12½"x7½", unpolished; the back stamped 226 and 3226. £500-800 - Sold for £800.

Lot 329 A shed plate, 21D Stratford upon Avon (1935 to February 1953), then Aston (June 1960 to September 1963). The ex SMJR shed at Stratford had just 8 loco when it lost this code. Ex LNWR shed Aston had 40 locos when using this code. The front repainted, the shed code has been reused by painting 21B on the back. This side is in fine original condition and originates when an Aston loco was transferred to Bescot and the plate being reversed! £100-200 - Sold for £540.

Lot 338 A worksplate, NORTH BRITISH LOCOMOTIVE Co Ltd, 27070, 1952 from an East African Railways Class 13 metre gauge tank loco No 1311, one of a class of 18 locos, all built by NBL in 1952. Originally built as 4-8-2 tanks, the class was later rebuilt as 4-8-4s because of a tendency to derail when operating in reverse. Cast brass, 13½"x5½", the left end point broken and replaced, otherwise original condition. £200-350 - Sold for £100.

Lot 346 A nameplate, HAPPY KNIGHT, from the Peppercorn A2 Class 4-6-2 No 60533 built at Doncaster, Works No 2024, in April 1948 and named after the racehorse owned by Mr W. Cooke which won the 1946 2000 Guineas. Always a Southern Area engine, it was allocated new to New England on 8 April 1948 where it spent most of its working life with spells at Copley Hill, Grantham and Kings Cross. Withdrawn from New England on 15 June 1963, it was despatched to Doncaster Works for scrap on 28 August 1963. Lot 354 An Irish cabside numberplate, GSR, 207, INCHICORE, 1887, from a Great Southern Railway Class 207 0-6-0T, the first of the class built at the Company's Inchicore Works in Dublin. It became part of the Irish State Railways, Coras Iompair Eireann (CIE), in 1945, their 201 Class, still No 207, and was withdrawn in 1959. Lot 357 A shedplate 50A York (1949 to June 1967 for steam, totally March 1984). This ex NER shed had 180 locos allocated in the 1950s; 5 A1s, 6 A2s, 4 B1 Antelopes, and 10 D49 Hunts. In the 1960s it was home to the few remaining A1 Pacifics, and much later became host to the magnificent Deltics. After closure it was transformed into the National Railway Museum. Ex loco condition, the back marked, 60536, referring to the A2 Class 4-6-2 Trimbush. £100-200 - Sold for £320.

Lot 360 An early 20th century GER 6 inch ships-style brass drum clock probably used at Beccles, now mounted on a circular mahogany base. Overall height: 8½", (excluding wall lugs and mount). Cast brass drum and bezel now closed with a spring latch. Inside rear of drum stamped EX. Y.R.K. (indicating release for sale by S&T at York) and scratched 3814 (probably the LNER number). Replaced 30 hour lever movement stamped ST U.S.A. indicating the American maker Seth Thomas. Repainted dial written G.E.R. and with a slot with regulation markers F and S (redundant with the replaced movement). Moon hands. The LNER number indicates the clock was used in the Station Master’s office at Beccles. Complete with winder and copy of LNER record card which indicates that it was condemned in 1958 and replaced by number 13653. (Movement replacement was regarded as creating a new clock with a new number). £300-500 - Sold for £620 to commission or postal bidder number 8569.

Lot 365 A GWR cabside numberplate, 6840, from the 6800 Grange Class 4-6-0, HAZELEY GRANGE, built at Swindon in September 1937 and taking its name from Hazeley Grange Farm at Cleobury Mortimer near Kidderminster. A long time Pontypool Road loco, it spent a final couple of years at Neath Court Sart and Llanelly from where it was withdrawn in the week ending 20 February 1965 and cut up at Swindon Works. Cast brass, the front repainted. £1200-1600 - Sold for £2600.

Lot 366 A signal box nameboard, BOOTHFERRY ROAD. The box was west of Goole station. Cast letters on wood, length 78½", original condition, beading absent at left end. £100-200 - Sold for £250 to commission or postal bidder number 3713.

Lot 367 A worksplate, NASMYTH WILSON, 1437, 1924, from a 5ft 3ins gauge 4-4-2T, one of ten supplied by NW to the Great Northern Railway of Ireland (GNR(I)), running number 142, and used on both passenger and freight work. When the GNR(I) was dissolved in 1958 the locomotive passed to the Còras Iompair Éireann (CIE) and was withdrawn in 1959. Cast brass, 13¾"x5½", in ex loco condition. £600-800 - Sold for £600 to commission or postal bidder number 782.

Lot 369 A smokebox numberplate, 63868, from a 2-8-0 built to Ministry of Munitions order for the Railway Operating Division of the Royal Engineers to Robinson's Great Central design by the North British Locomotive Co, Works No 22172, in 1919, ROD No 2081, and loaned to the Caledonian Railway. It was returned to the ROD in 1921 and placed in store at Gretna until purchased by the LNER in 1927, their Class O4/3 No 6625. It was rebuilt as an O1 in 1945 and renumbered 3868 in 1946, becoming BR 63868. Allocated to Gorton by January 1948 and then Annesley (where it worked the famous fast freights nicknamed windcutters to Woodford Halse until displaced by the BR Standard 2-10-0s in 1957), March, Staveley GC and Langwith Junction from where it was withdrawn on 11 July 1965 and cut up by Drapers at Hull during the week ending 6 November 1965. The front repainted. £300-500 - Sold for £340.

Lot 370 A LNER silver plated Coronation pattern vegetable dish and cover by Walker and Hall, 12"x8¾", with ribbed pattern to the edges and handles. £100-200 - Sold for £100.

Lot 371 A shedplate 70G Newport (I.O.W.) (September 1954 to November 1957). This ex R&NR shed, formerly 71E, was home to 15 locos. The code was then reused by the SR when it took over Weymouth (September 1963 to July 1967) formerly 82F, from the WR. During this period it was responsible for 24 locos, half of which were Bulleid MN 4-6-2s. Repainted. £150-300 - Sold for £500.

Lot 373 A worksplate, LMS BUILT 1947 HORWICH, from a LMS Class 4 2-6-0 No 43000, the Class leader, allocated new to Crewe South on 6 December 1947 and later Bletchley, Devons Road, Nuneaton, Carlisle Upperby, Canal and Kingmoor, and North Blyth from where it was withdrawn on 9 September 1967 and sold for scrap to Clayton Davie at Gateshead. Cast iron, 10¼"x6", the front repainted, the provenance recorded on a paper label on the ex loco back. £150-300 - Sold for £420.

Lot 374 A wagon plate, RETURN AT ONCE TO REDDING STATION, NORTH BRITISH RAILWAY. Redding station served an explosives factory used during the First World War, situated west of Polmont on the Edinburgh to Glasgow route. The plate is cast from a spark resistant non ferrous metal. 8¼"x4¾", the front repainted. £100-200 - Sold for £110.

Lot 375 A nameplate, LYDFORD CASTLE, originally carried by the 4073 Castle Class 4-6-0 No 5079 built at Swindon in May 1939 and named after the castle overlooking the town of Lydford in north Devon. The nameplates were removed in November 1940 when the loco was renamed LYSANDER after the World War II aircraft but were re-used when fitted to the newly built Castle Class loco No 7006 in June 1946. Allocated to Shrewsbury by January 1948, No 7006 moved later that year to Cardiff Canton and Gloucester where it remained for almost ten years, transferring to Laira in April 1958 and later Cardiff Canton again, Worcester and Old Oak Common from where it was withdrawn on 16 December 1963 and sold for scrap to Birds Commercial Motors at Risca on 3 June 1964. £12000-15000 - Sold for £13900 to commission or postal bidder number 1108.

Lot 376 A pair of GWR signal box lever plates for detonators. One refers to Main and Loops. Engraved brass 3"x5", used in Lapworth box on the Leamington to Birmingham route. (2) £100-200 - Sold for £1250.

Lot 377 A Great Northern and Great Eastern Joint Railway signal lamp interior with brass plate, PARK DRAIN. The box was on the Doncaster to Gainsborough section of the GN & GE Joint Line. £300-500 - Sold for £30.

Lot 378 A worksplate, LONDON NORTH EASTERN RAILWAY Co, 1616, DONCASTER, 1925, from the LNER A1 Class 4-6-2 No 2560 built at Doncaster, Works in April 1925 and named PRETTY POLLY after the filly which won the 1904 Oaks, 1000 Guineas and St Leger. It was rebuilt as an A3 in May 1944 and renumbered 61 in 1946, becoming BR 60061. Allocated new to Gorton, it soon moved to Kings Cross and remained a Southern Section engine for the whole of its working life with spells at Grantham, New England, Doncaster and Copley Hill and on the Great Central at both Leicester and Neasden. It was withdrawn from Grantham on 16 June 1963 and cut up at Doncaster Works. Fully engraved brass, 13½"x7¾" unpolished, the back stamped 2560 and 61. £3000-5000 - Sold for £5100 to commission or postal bidder number 523.

Lot 380 A GWR cabside numberplate, 3626, from a 8750 Class 0-6-0PT built at Swindon in June 1939. Allocated to Birkenhead by January 1948 and later Wrexham GC, Wellington and Duffryn Yard from where it was withdrawn on 1 August 1963 and sold for scrap to Hayes at Bridgend on 1 January 1964. Lot 381 A booking office stamp, WEST GRINSTEAD, LB & SCRy, from the Christ Hospital to Shoreham route which closed in 1966. Brass head with turned wooden handle, height 3¼". £150-250 - Sold for £210.

Lot 382 A Cambrian Rly. Late 19th or early 20th century 5" brass drum clock in good condition. Used at Portmadoc. Overall height 5½" (excluding feet and handle). The cap scratched C65, Portmadoc Booking Off. Case side stamped 65. Vitreous enamel dial written Cam Rys with a central feather motif. Eight day spring driven movement with platform escapement and integral winder. Moon hands. These rarely encountered Cambrian drums are larger than the ubiquitous GWR version. As a result of boundary changes this clock appears in an LMS region clock census carried out in the late 1960s then in the Mess Room at Portmadoc. £700-900 - Sold for £1050.

Lot 383 A GWR cabside numberplate, 4923, from the 4900 Hall Class 4-6-0 EVENLEY HALL built at Swindon in April 1929 and named after the Georgian mansion just over one mile south of Brackley in South Northants, used as a children's home from the late 1940s but now a private residence. Allocated to Oxley by January 1948, its later sheds included eight years at Old Oak Common and four years at Landore with a final three years back at Oxley from where it was withdrawn in the week ending 30 May 1964 and sold for scrap to Cashmores at Great Bridge on 27 July 1964. Cast brass, repainted. £1000-1500 - Sold for £1650.

Lot 393 A worksplate, AVONSIDE, 2064, 1931, from a 0-6-0ST named, St. MARTIN which went new to Pearson & Dorman Long Ltd at Betteshanger Colliery, Kent and became National Coal Board property, still at Betteshanger, in January 1947, later spending some time at Snowdown Colliery before returning to Betteshanger. The only locos built by the LMS at Crewe in 1940 were streamlined Princess Coronation Class 8P 4-6-2s Nos 6240-4 which became BR 46240-4 and were named City of Coventry, City of Edinburgh, City of Glasgow, City of Lancaster and City of Leeds, the latter renamed King George VI in 1941. Lot 398 A smokebox numberplate, 90522, from a War Department Austerity 2-8-0 built to Ministry of Supply order by Vulcan Foundry, Works No 4867, in May 1943, WD No 77051. It was loaned to the LMS in May 1943, returned to the WD in January 1945, loaned in April 1947 to the LNER and taken into BR stock in December 1948. Its BR allocations included Colchester, March, Doncaster, Retford GC and Retford GN from where it was withdrawn on 2 May 1965 and cut up by Drapers at Hull during the six days ending 17 July 1965. In ex loco condition. £350-500 - Sold for £520.

Lot 399 A nameplate, GALOPIN, from the LNER A1 Class 4-6-2 No 2575 built by the North British Locomotive Co, Works No 23113, in October 1924 and named after the racehorse owned by Prince Batthyany which won the 1875 Derby. It was rebuilt and re-classified to A3 Class in June 1941, renumbered 76 in 1946 and became BR 60076. Always a North Eastern Area engine, it spent its first twenty-four years and most of its later career at Gateshead with several spells at Darlington and a final few weeks at Heaton from where it was withdrawn on 29 October 1962 and cut up at Doncaster Works. Cast brass, length 56½", the front repainted. £5000-8000 - Sold for £5000.

Lot 400 A shedplate, 6F Bidston (1949 to February 1963) then Machynlleth including Aberystwyth CR and VoR sheds (September 1963 to April 1965). The ex GCR shed situated in Bidston Docks was noted for its 2F 0-6-0s (47160) and handful of BR 9Fs. Allocation rarely exceeded 15 locos. The ex Cambrian shed at Machynlleth, formerly 89C, had just 13 locos plus the three VoR engines during this period. Repainted. £100-200 - Sold for £140.

Lot 401 A BR(S) mid-20th century 8" fusee roundhead clock used at Waterloo. Overall height: 11½". Oak case with dovetailed and screwed box and four piece dial surround. Dial, unusually riveted to a false plate, written B.R (S) 11001 and made in England, Smiths. Spun brass bezel with clip-in sight ring. Fusee movement stamped 18223 on both plates. Bought in 1949 for £5-10-0 plus £1-16-8 purchase tax and used in the Public Relations office at Waterloo. Complete with pendulum, winding key and copy of its entry in SR clock records. £500-700 - This lot did not sell at the auction. Lot 406 A London and Birmingham Railway umbrella stand from Curzon Street station, Birmingham. The stand was purchased from Collectors Corner after being declared surplus by Clapham museum, (the accession number is marked underneath). Oak with brass knobs and cast iron base tray on three feet. One foot detached when sold and repaired, an envelope from Collectors Corner marked, 325/59, part of umbrella stand from Curzon St, Birmingham. £350-500 - Sold for £420 to commission or postal bidder number 4214.

Lot 407 A worksplate, BEYER PEACOCK, 7018, 1941, from a LMS Stanier type 8F 2-8-0 built for the War Department to Ministry of Supply order, WD No 438. It was shipped to Middle East Forces in Iran as No 41-179 before moving to Egypt as WD 70438. It returned to the UK in 1948 when it was purchased by BR, becoming 48290. Allocated to Crewe South in the week ending 3 September 1949 and later Willesden, Northampton, Birkenhead, Aintree and Sutton Oak from where it was withdrawn in the week ending 14 August 1965 and sold for scrap to J Buttigieg at Newport. Cast brass, 10"x5¾", the front repainted. £300-400 - Sold for £380.

Lot 408 A carriage print, HENRY VI AT NORTHAMPTON, by Mortlemans, from the LMR Historical series. £80-120 - Sold for £150 to commission or postal bidder number 3500.

Lot 409 A BR(E) totem sign, WALTHAM CROSS, (h/f) from the Liverpool Street to Cambridge route, the station situated between Enfield Lock and Cheshunt. A crease and chip to the left wing, neatly restored. £500-600 - Sold for £820 to commission or postal bidder number 3556.

Lot 410 A shed plate, 9A Longsight (1935 to February 1965). This ex LNWR shed was home to 130 locos in 1950, which included 13 Royal Scots, 15 Jubilees and 7 Patriots. In 1962 the dwindling number of passenger locos was supplemented by an influx of 7 Britannias. A LMS style code, the characters repainted, otherwise original condition. £100-200 - Sold for £200.

Lot 414 A BR(Sc) totem sign, CAMELON, (f/f), from the Polmont to Larbert route; the station closed in 1967. Loss of colour and shine. £300-500 - Sold for £260.

Lot 415 A headboard THE EAST ANGLIAN with shields depicting the arms of London and the Kingdom of East Anglia. This style of headboard was carried by Stratford Class 47s from May 1980. The service ran between Liverpool Street and Yarmouth (Vauxhall) until 1985 when Norwich became the final destination. Wood with steel brackets, 34¼"x13½", the front paintwork restored. £300-500 - Sold for £560.

Lot 416 A late 19th or early 20th century L&SWR 8 inch drop-case mahogany clock in good restored condition. Overall height: 12". One of about 140 of these popular small clocks supplied to the LSWR by John Gaydon of Barnstaple and his successor James Fox for use on the companies far south west lines. Many, including this one, were taken into Western Region care after post-nationalisation boundary changes; it bears a late style BR-W Ivorine number plate marked 5929. No indication of the LSWR number and hence its location in use is unknown. Well executed repairs to side and bottom doors. Dial repainted and written JN. Gaydon Barnstaple. Wire fusee movement. Cast brass bezel with integral sight ring. Complete with pendulum, winder and door key. £1000-1500 - Sold for £1050.

Lot 417 A worksplate, LONDON & NORTH EASTERN RAILWAY, 9645, COWLAIRS, 1891, from a North British Railway Class C 0-6-0 No 645 built at Cowlairs in February 1891, becoming LNER J36 Class No 9645, renumbered 5221 in 1946, BR 65221. A long time Eastfield engine, it spent a final four months at Kittybrewster from where it was withdrawn on 23 July 1959 and cut up at Inverurie Works on 19 November 1959. Cast brass, 9"x5", cleaned but unpainted. £200-350 - Sold for £220.

Lot 419 A LMS Hawkseye target sign, LUFFENHAM, from the Leicester to Peterborough route. The station was situated east of Stamford and closed on 6th June 1966. Cast aluminium, length 48", the front repainted. £300-500 - Sold for £480.

Lot 420 An LNER Hotels Wedgwood style one cup tea pot with side spout, together with a small matching sugar bowl (with one wrapped LNER sugar cube, discoloured). Each piece marked on the base with the Company name. (2) £80-120 - Sold for £50.

Lot 422 A smokebox numberplate, 42566, from a LMS Class 4 2-6-4T built by the North British Locomotive Co, Works No 24322, and allocated new to Chester on 26 August 1966. Its many later sheds included Bletchley, Macclesfield, Warwick, Leamington Spa and Birkenhead from where it was withdrawn in the week ending 22 May 1965 and cut up by Drapers at Hull during the week ending 23 October 1965. The front repainted. £300-500 - Sold for £900.

Lot 424 A shedplate 9B Stockport Edgeley (1935 to May 1968). The ex LNWR shed at Stockport housed only 25 locos in the 1950s, but this increased to 35 during the twilight of steam in the 1960s. Most famous resident was undoubtedly the double chimney Jubilee 45596 Bahamas. Repainted. £100-200 - Sold for £250.

Lot 426 A Caledonian Station Hotel, Edinburgh, floral pattern tea plate by Donald & Co., Bristo Port, Edinburgh. Large coat of arms and title within scrollwork, though this is on the base. £50-80 - Sold for £100.

Lot 427 A worksplate ENGLISH ELECTRIC/VF 2782/D497 1960 from Class 40 D260, later 40060. New to Haymarket in February 1960; withdrawn from Carlisle Kingmoor in January 1985 and transferred to Departmental stock as 97405. Withdrawn from Crewe in March 1987 and cut up by Vic Berry in Leicester in March 1988. Chromed cast brass, 10¼"x4½", in ex loco condition. £250-400 - Sold for £920.

Lot 429 An LSWR destination plate from the departure indicator at Salisbury or Exeter Queen Street, OKEHAMPTON, TAVISTOCK, DEVONPORT, PLYMOUTH, BUDE, PADSTOW. Enamel, 6¾"x3½", a blemish on the first letter of the second name. £150-300 - Sold for £400 to commission or postal bidder number 3634.

Lot 430 A North British Locomotive Company silver plated footed cigarette box by Aristocrat, 4½"x3½", the front marked with the company diamond motif. £100-200 - Sold for £140.

Lot 431 A shedplate 1C Watford (1935 to March 1965). This ex LNWR shed had an allocation of 30 locos in the 50s. An LMS style plate. Repainted. £100-200 - Sold for £270.

Lot 432 A BR(E) station sign, MORCOTT, (flangeless). This was the only intermediate station on the branch linking the Market Harborough to Peterborough line at Seaton with the Peterborough to Leicester line at Luffenham. The station closed on 6th June 1966. 67½"x13½". Excellent condition and a manageable size. We have not seen any other signs from the station. £200-350 - Sold for £260.

Lot 433 A worksplate, BUILT 1950 HORWICH. Locos built at Horwich in 1950 were all (LMS) Class 5 4-6-0 Nos 44670-85/88-97. Cast iron, 10½"x6", in ex loco condition. £150-300 - Sold for £210.

Lot 440 A nameplate, HUSSAR, from a standard gauge 0-4-0ST built by Andrew Barclay, Works No 1441, in 1919, which went new to Stafford Coal & Iron Co Ltd at Fenton, Stoke-on-Trent. In 1934 ownership of the Company was transferred to Settle Speakman & Co Ltd and in about 1939 this loco moved to their premises at Queenborough Wharf on the Isle of Sheppey in Kent. It was scrapped on site in August 1962 by M. Lynch & Co of Strood. Cast brass, 28½"x6", the front cleaned and polished but with the original red paintwork, the back untouched. £500-800 - Sold for £500.

Lot 441 A BR(M) totem sign, AMPTHILL, (f/f), the first station south of Bedford, closed 1959. Excellent condition, the first example to be offered for sale at auction. £800-1200 - Sold for £1500.

Lot 446 A South African Railways cabside numberplate, 1942, 12BR, from a 3ft 6ins gauge SAR Class 12B 4-8-2 No 1942 built by Baldwin, Works No 52693, in 1920, for goods traffic. It was later rebuilt with a standard No 2 boiler and re-classified as Class 12BR. All were withdrawn by 1984. Cast brass, 20¾"x14½", in ex loco condition. £300-500 - Sold for £460.

Lot 447 A BR(NE) direction sign, WAY OUT, TO NETHERFIELD ROAD, (f/f) from Guiseley Station on the Leeds to Ilkley route. £350-500 - Sold for £540.

Lot 448 A nameplate, TREMATON HALL, from the GWR 4900 Hall Class 4-6-0 No 5949 built at Swindon in April 1935 and named after the 19th Century Georgian house two miles west of the Saltash Bridge in Cornwall. Allocated to Bristol Bath Road by January 1948, it alternated between there and nearby St Philips Marsh until moving in September 1960 to Swindon from where it was withdrawn on 30 May 1961 and cut up at the adjacent Works in the week ending 23 September 1961. £5000-7000 - Sold for £5000.

Lot 450 A shedplate 85A Worcester (1949 to December 1965). This ex GWR shed was home to 80 locos in the 1950s, including Bulldogs, Stars, Castles, Halls and Granges. Even in its final year it hosted 6 Halls and 5 Granges in a total of 24 locos. The front repainted. £100-200 - Sold for £320.

Lot 451 A Tyers No 6 single line tablet, WELLAND BANK-HOLBEACH EAST, (brass/steel), from the Spalding to Sutton Bridge section of the Midland and Great Northern Joint line, closed to passengers in 1959. This section survived for freight until 1965. This is one of two brass/steel weighting tablets, the remainder being alloy. £150-300 - Sold for £460 to commission or postal bidder number 1729.

Lot 452 A BR(NE) totem sign, BARNARD CASTLE, (h/f) from the Darlington to Penrith, Stainmore route. The station closed in 1960. A chip repair to the centre and a little discolouration as is usual. £1000-1500 - Sold for £4000 to commission or postal bidder number 4845.

Lot 457 A worksplate, LONDON & NORTH EASTERN RAILWAY, 61450, DARLINGTON, 1923, from a LNER B16 Class 4-6-0 No 2379 built at Darlington in June 1923, renumbered 1450 in 1946, becoming BR 61450. Allocated by January 1948 to York North where it spent virtually all its BR days. Withdrawn on 25 September 1961, it was cut up at Darlington Works. Lot 464 A Great Northern and City Railway station sign, FINSBURY PARK, fitted at the opening of the route in 1904. When the standard target signs were later introduced half moon plates were simply fitted above and below these signs. Enamel. 57"x12", presented in a wooden frame. £100-200 - Sold for £520.

Lot 465 A North British Railway C class 0-6-0, (later J36) gauge 0 model by Majestic Models, built, painted and lined to a high standard, in NBR livery. Lot 466 A South African industrial locomotive cabside numberplate, DOUGLAS COLLIERY No 2, from a 3ft 6ins gauge Industrial 12A class 4-8-2, a copy of the South African Railways Class 12A but unsuperheated, built new for New Douglas Colliery for long hauls to Vandyksdrif in the Witbank coalfields. In 1977 it was transferred to Witbank Colliery for the Wolverkrans colliery branch. Cast brass, 17"x12", the front repainted. £300-500 - Sold for £420 to commission or postal bidder number 4403.

Lot 468 A worksplate, LONDON & NORTH EASTERN RAILWAY, 65822, N.B. LOCO Co, 1908, from a North Eastern Railway Class P3, LNER J27 Class, 0-6-0 No 1035 built by the North British Locomotive Co, Works No 18367, in June 1908. It was renumbered 5822 in 1946 and became BR 65822. Allocated by January 1948 to Percy Main, it moved three years later to South Blyth where it remained until withdrawal on 1 March 1965. It was sold for scrap to Hughes Bolckow, also of Blyth, and was received by them on 30 April 1965. Cast brass, 9"x5", cleaned but unpainted. £150-300 - Sold for £450.

Lot 470 A worksplate, LMS BUILT 1939, CREWE, from the LMS Princess Coronation Class 4-6-2 No 6228, BR 46228, DUCHESS OF RUTLAND, built with streamlined casing, removed in 1947. Allocated new to Camden, it spent most of its working life there and at Carlisle Upperby and Crewe North from where it was withdrawn in the week ending 12 September 1964 and cut up by Cashmores at Great Bridge during the week ending 9 January 1965. Cast brass, 10¼"x6", the front repainted, the ex loco back stamped 6228. £200-350 - Sold for £1050 to commission or postal bidder number 3535.

Lot 471 A GWR silver plated coffee pot by Elkington, 8¼" tall, the side marked with the Refreshment Department garter. £80-120 - Sold for £170.

Lot 472 A GWR cabside numberplate, 3854, from a 2884 Class 2-8-0 built at Swindon in September 1942. Allocated to Southall by January 1948, its later sheds included Oxford, St Philips Marsh and Pontypool Road, returning in December 1962 to Southall from where it was withdrawn in the week ending 12 June 1965 and sold for scrap to George Cohen at Morriston on 28 July 1965. Cast iron, in ex loco condition with traces of red paint visible. £500-800 - Sold for £560.

Lot 474 A worksplate, ROBERT STEPHENSON & HAWTHORNS Ltd, 7180, 1944, from an Austerity type 0-6-0ST built to Ministry of Supply order for the War Department, WD 71526. In 1947 it was sold to the National Coal Board and arrived at Haydock Colliery in August 1947. It had moved to Clock Face Colliery south of St Helens by May 1948 and was named CLOCKFACE (in one word). It had returned to Haydock by mid 1954 but moved to Sutton Manor Colliery by March 1959 and also worked at Bold Colliery. It went in about June 1970 to Cronton Colliery where it was scrapped by Mee & Cocker Ltd of Leigh in September 1972. Cast iron, 13"x8½", repainted. £150-300 - Sold for £200.

Lot 476 A worksplate, NORTH BRITISH LOCO Co Ltd, HYDE PARK WORKS, 16391, 1904, from a 3ft 6ins gauge 4-8-0 new to the Natal Government Railway in South Africa, their No 296. On the formation of South African Railways in 1912 it became their Class 1 No 1296. All were withdrawn by 1975. Cast brass, 7¾" diameter, the front cleaned but unpainted. £200-350 - Sold for £100.

Lot 477 A BR(S) totem sign, DEAL, (f/f), from the Dover to Minster (Thanet) route. One small edge chip, just into the green. £300-500 - Sold for £700.

Lot 478 A shedplate, 2B Nuneaton (1950 to September 1963) then Oxley (September 1963 to November 1966). The ex LNWR shed at Nuneaton had an allocation of 70 locos during the 1950s, before becoming 5E. The ex GWR shed at Oxley was transferred from the WR (84B), and its allocation of around 60 locos included 15 Granges and 2 Manors. Repainted. £100-200 - Sold for £210.

Lot 480 A smokebox numberplate, 3604, from a GWR 8750 Class 0-6-0PT built at Swindon in January 1939. Allocated to St Philips Marsh by January 1948, it alternated between there and nearby Bristol Bath Road until moving in November 1960 to Swansea East Dock from where it was withdrawn on 28 December 1963 and sold for scrap to T.W. Ward at Briton Ferry on 28 February 1964. The numbers repainted, otherwise original condition. £250-400 - Sold for £320.

Lot 481 A brass stamp, HIGHLAND RAILWAY AUDIT OFFICE, with space for date, 5" long, steel head with turned wooden handle. £100-200 - Sold for £50.

Lot 482 A worksplate, ROBERT STEPHENSON, 2915, 1899. This plate covered the rebuilding by RS of Kitson 2510 of 1883, an 0-6-0 pannier tank with inside cylinders for the Consett Iron Co at Consett Iron Works, County Durham, running number A No 6. It passed to the NCB on 1 January 1947 at Derwenthaugh locomotive shed, Swalwell, where it was renumbered 42. The boiler was transferred to a sister locomotive at Derwenthaugh in the summer of 1966 and the remainder scrapped on site in the August by D. Sep Bowran Ltd of Gateshead. Engraved brass, 13½"x8", the front lightly polished and characters painted. £300-500 - Sold for £1150.

Lot 483 A small LNER carriage board, ABERDEEN & FRASERBURGH/ABERDEEN & PETERHEAD, from the former Great North of Scotland routes which closed to passengers in 1965. Wood, 32½"x3¼", original condition with some wear to the lettering. £50-80 - Sold for £180.

Lot 484 A shedplate 73C Hither Green (1948 to October 1961 for steam). This ex SR shed was home to around 50 locos during the 1950s. It later became home to Class 24 and 33 diesels, many carrying this type of code. Lot 486 A South African Railways cabside numberplate, 2295, GM, from a 3ft 6ins gauge SAR Class GM 4-8-2+2-8-4 Beyer Garratt No 2295 built by Beyer Peacock, Works No 6887, in 1938, one of a class of only sixteen locos. The class was replaced by diesel traction in 1972 and all were withdrawn in August 1973. Cast brass, 20¾"x14½", the front cleaned but unpainted. £500-800 - Sold for £960.

Lot 487 A BR(W) totem sign, WELLINGTON, (h/f). The station closed in 1964 and was on the Taunton to Exeter section of the West of England main line. Excellent condition. £500-800 - Sold for £680.

Lot 488 A shedplate 72A Exmouth Junction (1950 to September 1963). This ex LSWR shed to the east of Exeter had over 120 locos allocated throughout this period. At its peak it had 33 Bulleid Light Pacifics and 7 Merchant Navies as well as 5 of those exotic Z class 0-8-0 tanks. In September 1963 it received the WR code 83D. Lot 489 A Great North of Scotland Railway Trespass notice, Aberdeen, 1st October 1909, T S Mackintosh, Secty. An attractive sign, the text in script lettering which includes the full company name in three places. Enamel, 24"x18", an above average example with chipping just at the top centre and base, minimal damage to the title and slight weathering. £100-200 - Sold for £460.

Lot 491 A (GWR) cabside numberplate, 1637, from a 1600 Class 0-6-0T built at Swindon and allocated new on 23 February 1951 to Neyland where it spent all its working life. Withdrawn on 30 June 1960, it was sold for scrap to Hayes at Bridgend on 28 February 1961. Cast brass, the front repainted. £350-500 - Sold for £520.

The design of the plate unique to the line, this example being situated just inside the south end of Coombe Down Tunnel, south of Bath Green Park.
