A nameplate, GALOPIN, from the LNER A1 Class 4-6-2 No 2575 built by the North British Locomotive Co, Works No 23113, in October 1924 and named after the racehorse owned by Prince Batthyany which won the 1875 Derby. It was rebuilt and re-classified to A3 Class in June 1941, renumbered 76 in 1946 and became BR 60076. Always a North Eastern Area engine, it spent its first twenty-four years and most of its later career at Gateshead with several spells at Darlington and a final few weeks at Heaton from where it was withdrawn on 29 October 1962 and cut up at Doncaster Works. Cast brass, length 56½", the front repainted. £5000-8000 |
