From a standard gauge 0-6-0ST new to Stewarts & Lloyds Ltd, Corby Ironstone Quarries, Northamptonshire as 49 CAERPHILLY. Later became Stewarts & Lloyds (Minerals) Ltd and transferred in February 1962 to Glendon East Quarries. Taken over by British Steel Corporation in June 1968 and transferred in August 1968 to Storefield Ironstone Quarries. Sold for scrap in October 1969 to Geo. Cohen, Sons & Co Ltd, Cransley, Northamptonshire and cut up there in December 1969. Cast brass, 12¾"x8", in ex loco condition; a pattern of plate unique to this batch. £500-800 - Sold for £960. Lot 3 A signal box nameboard, HUNSTANTON, the terminus of the route from Kings Lynn, closed in 1969. Cast letters on wood, 74"x12", in original condition. £300-500 - Sold for £4200. Lot 4 A Manchester Sheffield & Lincolnshire Railway sauce tureen, by W.T. Copeland and Sons. China, length 8", height 4", the company coat of arms prominent on the top and side. £100-200 - Sold for £180. Lot 5 A Caledonian Railway signal instrument plate, GLASTERLAW, from the Forfar to Bridge of Dun section of the Caledonian main line. Cast brass, engraved name, 5¾"x2". £100-200 - Sold for £320 to commission or postal bidder number 3794. Lot 6 A Norfolk and Suffolk Joint Committee (M&GN and GER) three aspect sliding knob handlamp, the top stamped CORTON, 5, with a metal plate N&SC. The lamp is complete with its GER vessel and has been repainted. It has an additional LNER brass relocation plate, SURFLEET, added. £250-400 - Sold for £360. Lot 7 A signal box nameboard, CHESTER No 6. The box was mounted on a gantry west of the station on the Shrewsbury line. Cast letters on wood, 64½"x10", in original condition. £200-350 - Sold for £250. Lot 8 A BR(W) lamp tablet, TINKERS GREEN HALT, from the Oswestry to Whitchurch route. The Halt closed in 1965. Enamel, 20"x6¼", a rim chip at the top left, slight loss of shine. £300-500 - Sold for £1800. Lot 9 A pair of GWR Refreshment Department silver plated cake tongs by Elkington, length 8¾". £100-200 - Sold for £320. Lot 10 An LNER shed label for KING'S LYNN, as carried in the cab roof from around 1929. This ex GER shed had around 45 locos at nationalisation. Lot 13 A Great Central Railway cast iron notice warning drivers not to emit smoke at Cleethorpes while stationary in the station and sidings. Cast iron, 27¼"x17½", in original condition, a crack to the right side repaired by the railway by means of a steel plate to the back. £400-600 - Sold for £700. Lot 14 A Great Eastern Railway silver plated fruit bowl by Elkington with circular foot and decorative handle, 9¾" diameter, 3½" tall, with the company initials and bat's wing device on top, £150-300 - Sold for £250 to commission or postal bidder number 8479. Lot 15 A BR(W) totem sign, GLOUCESTER EASTGATE, (f/f), from the Bristol to Birmingham main line. An uncommon fully flanged example. £500-800 - Sold for £1300. Lot 17 A North British Railway drinking fountain, complete with tap and cup on chain. This type of fountain with the wording KEEP THE PAVEMENT DRY and a pair of bluebirds was used on the West Highland Line to Fort William. Overall height 35", unrestored. £500-800 - Sold for £700. Lot 18 A Great Central Railway small sliding knob three aspect handlamp in fine original condition with vessel stamped GCR and brass plate, MR D.W. VERNON. Lot 25 A Great Eastern Railway telegraph instrument incorporating writing slope, the original face with company name, alphabet and telegraph codes, the case restored. £250-400 - Sold for £360. Lot 26 A smokebox numberplate 3806 from a GWR 2884 Class 2-8-0 built at Swindon in August 1939. A long time Severn Tunnel Junction engine, it spent a final eighteen months at Banbury from where it was withdrawn on 11 November 1963 and sold for scrap to Cashmores at Great Bridge. Repainted. £250-400 - Sold for £320. Lot 27 A Great Eastern Railway Hotels chamber pot, by Mintons, gold bands to the top, base and handle and prominent company garter with the bat's wing device. £150-300 - Sold for £240. Lot 28 A worksplate, FRIED KRUPP, 2985, 1952, from a South African Railways 3ft 6ins gauge Class S2 0-8-0 shunting locomotive No 3720. The class was specifically designed for use on lightly laid harbour track and worked mainly in Durban, Port Elizabeth and Cape Town. Cast brass, 9¾"x4", in ex loco condition. £100-200 - Sold for £260. Lot 29 A London Transport small target sign, MARBLE ARCH, complete with brass frame, a Central Line station. Enamel, 24"x20". £800-1200 - Sold for £1750. Lot 30 A worksplate, BRITISH RAILWAYS CREWE BRUSH/SULZER 1965, from Class 47 D1666, later 47081, 47606, 47842 and 47778. New to Landore in March 1965 and named ODIN at Cardiff Canton, the first of the class to be named. AS 47778 it was named IRRESISTIBLE and then DUKE OF EDINBURGH'S AWARD. Withdrawn from Toton in March 2004 and cut up by EMR at Kingsbury in March 2006. Cast aluminium, 13"x6½", the front repainted. £300-500 - Sold for £650 to commission or postal bidder number 2722. Lot 32 A signal box nameboard, GRESTY LANE No 2, a box outside Crewe on the route to Shrewsbury. Lot 33 A GWR three aspect copper top handlamp with oval brass makers plate, WILLIAM SUGG & CO, WRIGHTS PATENT. The body is stamped GWR and has M.L. TONDU painted on the side (lettering now worn but still clear) indicating Tondu Middle. The lamp is in original condition and complete with its original copper vessel with matching Sugg makers plate. £100-200 - Sold for £270. Lot 36 A BR(NE) totem sign, APPERLEY BRIDGE, (f/f), from the Leeds to Skipton route. £1200-1500 - Sold for £2000 to commission or postal bidder number 1065. Lot 37 A London & South Western Railway first class pass to The Earl of Selborne. Silver and blue enamel, diameter 1". £250-400 - Sold for £460. Lot 38 A BR(E) station sign, HARSTON, from the Hitchin to Cambridge route. The station closed in 1963. Enamel, 41¼"x10¼", minor edge chips. £300-500 - Sold for £520. Lot 39 A nameplate, ULSTER, from a LMS Jubilee Class 6P 4-6-0 No 5739 built at Crewe and named when built on 9 December 1936 after the Irish Province, becoming BR 45739. Allocated new to Crewe North, it spent most of its LMS days at Camden and almost all its BR days at Holbeck before moving in June 1964 to Wakefield from where it was withdrawn on 4 January 1967 and cut up by Drapers at Hull in the week ending 24 June 1967. Cast brass, length 28¾", the front repainted. £6000-8000 - Sold for £7600 to commission or postal bidder number 1005. Lot 40 A Tyers No 6 single line tablet, PETROCKSTOW-HATHERLEIGH, (brass), from the Torrington to Halwill route which closed in 1966. £300-500 - Sold for £520. Lot 41 A station direction sign, TO BRENTFORD STATION, L&SWR, from the Barnes to Feltham loop. Enamel, 18"x9", double sided, chipping to fixing holes and small face and edge chips. £400-600 - Sold for £840. Lot 42 A coin operated brass model of Stephenson's Rocket, made by John Moss of Ambergate, named on a small brass plate under the engine, and contained in a glazed wooden case. The model is powered by a clock mechanism and takes pennies or other coins. The front has a photograph of the Railway Servants' Orphanage, Derby, for which the model raised funds. It was situated on the platform at Edinburgh Waverley and was rescued by the late Eric Lomax. Overall height 60". £900-1200 - Sold for £2600 to commission or postal bidder number 8218. Lot 43 A GWR cabside numberplate, 6632, from a 5600 Class 0-6-2T built at Swindon in August 1928. Allocated to Leamington by January 1948, it moved in December 1951 to Croes Newydd from where it was withdrawn on 10 September 1963 and cut up at Swindon Works in the four weeks ending 30 November 1963. Cast iron, the front repainted. £300-500 - Sold for £380 to commission or postal bidder number 3403. Lot 44 A wagonplate, NEWTON CHAMBERS, 2786, THORNCLIFFE IRON WORKS, NEAR SHEFFIELD. Cast iron, 11"x7 ½", the front repainted. £100-200 - Sold for £160. Lot 45 A BR(W) quad royal poster, CORNWALL, by L.A. Wilcox. (PR164/60) £300-500 - Sold for £460 to commission or postal bidder number 8125. Lot 46 A BR(S) station sign (f/f) from Waterloo listing suburban stations and directing passengers to the Waterloo and City line. Enamel, 60"x30". £250-400 - Sold for £850. Lot 47 A shedplate 73D Gillingham (1948 to June 1959). This ex SECR shed had an allocation of around 35 locos during the 1950s. It lost its allocation in 1959 but remained a sub shed servicing locos from Tonbridge. It finally closed in June 1960. £250-400 - Sold for £520 to commission or postal bidder number 1831. Lot 48 A BR(S) totem sign, SALISBURY, (h/f), from the West of England Main Line. Restoration to face and edge chips. £700-1000 - Sold for £1100 to commission or postal bidder number 8991. Lot 49 A Taff Vale Railway three aspect handlamp, the case, drum and vessel all stamped with the company initials and the body stamped 1639. The lamp is in original condition, with GWR burner with GWR initials on ceramic top, bulls eye lens & brass collar. £200-350 - Sold for £200. Lot 50 An LNER seat back plate, SCARBOROUGH, from the terminus station, later Scarborough Central. Cast iron, length 40", unrestored. £300-500 - Sold for £600. Lot 51 A Railway Signal Company key token, HASSALL GREEN-LAWTON STATION, (steel/alloy), from the Kidsgrove to Sandbach route which closed in the 1970s. £100-200 - Sold for £120. Lot 52 A single line key token, ROCHE-TREGOSS, (alloy/replacement key end), a section on the Par to Newquay branch. Together with steel/alloy carrier. £150-300 - Sold for £320. Lot 53 A BR(W) totem sign, WELSHPOOL, (h/f) from the Cambrian route to Aberystwyth and Pwllheli. Loss of shine, though reasonable colour. £400-600 - Sold for £1000. Lot 54 A GWR cabside numberplate, 9405, from a 9400 Class 0-6-0PT, one of the first ten of this large class built by the GWR at Swindon, the remainder being contractor built for BR, this example built in May 1947. Allocated new to Old Oak Common, it also had spells at Reading, Southall and Bristol Barrow Road from where it was withdrawn in the week ending 12 June 1965 and sold for scrap to T.W. Ward at Briton Ferry on 28 July 1965. Cast brass, the front repainted. £400-600 - Sold for £840. Lot 55 A wagonplate, DERBY WAGON CO, OWNERS, DERBY, No 153. Cast iron, 11"x6", the front repainted. £100-200 - Sold for £180. Lot 56 A CLC oil can with brass plate, CHESHIRE LINES, HALEWOOD, WHITE MAY OIL. The station, which closed in 1951, was on the Warrington to Liverpool route. Base diameter 6¾", height 11", cleaned and repainted. £80-120 - Sold for £260. Lot 57 A worksplate, LMS, BUILT 1927, DERBY. Locos built at Derby in 1927 were Class 3P 4-4-2T Nos 2125-34 which became BR 41943-52, Class 4 2-6-4T Nos 2300-03 which became BR 42300-03 and Class 4F 0-6-0 Nos 4288-4301 and 4407-36 which became BR 44288-4301 and 44407-36. Cast brass, 10½"x6", the front repainted. £150-300 - Sold for £150. Lot 58 A BR(S) totem sign, GUILDFORD, (f/f), from the London to Portsmouth route. £300-500 - Sold for £440. Lot 59 A GWR cabside numberplate, 5945, from a GWR 4900 Hall Class 4-6-0 built at Swindon in March 1935 and named LECKHAMPTON HALL after the country house on the outskirts of Cheltenham which was demolished in about 1958. Allocated to Oxley by January 1948, its later sheds included Old Oak Common, Swindon, Southall and Oxford from where it was withdrawn in the week ending 30 March 1963 and cut up at Swindon Works in the four weeks ending 7 September 1963. Cast brass, the front repainted. £900-1200 - Sold for £1250. Lot 60 A GWR signal box nameboard, RUABON SOUTH BOX, from the Shrewsbury to Chester route. Cast iron, length 64", in original condition. £500-800 - Sold for £900. Lot 61 A Webb & Thompson large train staff, WEXFORD-MACMINE, from the southern end of the Dublin, Wicklow & Wexford Railway. £200-350 - Sold for £340 to commission or postal bidder number 486. Lot 62 A smokebox numberplate, 8707, from a GWR 5700 Class 0-6-0PT built by Beyer Peacock, Works No 6687, in February 1931. Allocated to Old Oak Common by January 1948, it moved in December 1955 to Pontypool Road from where it was withdrawn in the week ending 4 July 1964 and cut up at Swindon Works in the fortnight ending 5 September 1964. The front repainted. £200-350 - Sold for £320. Lot 63 A worksplate, NORTH BRITISH LOCOMOTIVE CO, HYDE PARK WORKS, 24767, 1942, from a Stanier type 2-8-0 built for the War Department to Ministry of Supply order, WD No 558. Loaned new to the LMS in June 1942, it returned to the WD in June 1943 and was sold to the LMS in December 1943, their Class 8F No 8271, and allocated to Normanton, becoming BR 48271. It moved in February 1952 to Toton and in April 1963 to Burton, finishing its days at Northwich from where it was withdrawn in the week ending 12 August 1967 and sold for scrap to J. Buttigieg at Newport. Cast brass, 7¾" diameter, in ex loco condition. £150-300 - Sold for £200. Lot 64 A BR(M) double royal poster, LABEL YOUR LUGGAGE CORRECTLY, an image of a traditional BR porter with totem cap badge. (LM19554) £80-120 - Sold for £180. Lot 65 A shedplate 66C Hamilton (1949 to November 1962). This ex CR shed was home to 50 locos in 1950 and closed to steam in November 1962. A DMU depot continued to use this code until 1972. Lot 68 A tenderplate, BR 5, 651, 1944, originally coupled with former War Department Austerity 2-8-0 No 90650 built by Vulcan Foundry in 1944, although changes of tender frequently occurred at various BR workshops. Lot 69 A carriage print, BAMBURGH, NORTHUMBERLAND, by Jack Merriott, R.I, from the LNER post-war series. £80-120 - Sold for £100. Lot 70 A LNWR signal box block instrument with ivorine plate, CRANE STREET, the needle (damaged) indicating LNW or GW. Crane Street is a box in the Chester area. £150-300 - Sold for £190. Lot 71 A station sign, TRAINS FOR CHESTER, from a station on the route to Holyhead. Cast letters on wood, 28"x16", the front repainted. £150-300 - Sold for £360. Lot 72 A GWR cabside numberplate, 5204, from a 4200 Class 2-8-0T built at Swindon in February 1923. A long time Llanelly engine, it had brief spells towards the end at Duffryn Yard and Neath Court Sart from where it was withdrawn on 19 November 1962 and sold for scrap to Hayes at Bridgend on 26 August 1963. Lot 73 A Metropolitan Railway weighbridge notice, enamel, 24"x12", restoration to corner chipping, loss at top left fixing screw hole. £200-350 - Sold for £200. Lot 74 A Midland Railway van numberplate, MIDLAND BRAKE, 308. Cast iron, 13½"x7¼", cleaned and the front repainted. £100-200 - Sold for £230. Lot 75 A signal box nameboard, LAMBRIGG X-ING, a box just south of Grayrigg on the Lancaster to Carlisle section of the West Coast Main Line. Cast letters on wood, 69"x11½", the front repainted. £200-350 - Sold for £380. Lot 76 A worksplate, PECKETT, 1703, 1926, from a standard gauge 0-4-0ST that went new to Barnstone Cement Co, Ltd, Nottinghamshire. Named LANGAR after a nearby village. The company was taken over by G. & T. Earle Ltd, in 1942 and subsequently became part of Associated Portland Cement Manufacturers Ltd. Scrapped on site by Speck of Bottesford in September 1969. Engraved brass, 12¼"x8½", the front lightly polished. £200-350 - Sold for £380. Lot 77 A BR(M) station sign, TICKET OFFICE & WAITING ROOM, (f/f), enamel, 18"x9", two tiny rim chips. £100-200 - Sold for £500. Lot 78 A single line key token, DOVEY JUNCTION-ABERYSTWYTH, (alloy), from the Cambrian Coast route. £100-200 - Sold for £270 to commission or postal bidder number 221. Lot 79 A LNWR three aspect handlamp, the body stamped P WAY DEPT WALSALL. The lamp is complete with BR burner. Repainted. £100-200 - Sold for £220 to commission or postal bidder number 1766. Lot 80 A shedplate 85C Hereford (1949 to September 1960), then Gloucester Barnwood (September 1960 to May 1964). The ex GWR shed at Hereford had 50 locos in 1950. Lot 82 A worksplate, BRUSH SULZER 632 1965, from Class 47 D1870, later 47220. New to Tinsley in June 1965; withdrawn from Tinsley in July 1993 where it had received the unofficial name RAPIER, and cut up at Coopers Metals, Sheffield in April 1994. Cast aluminium, 9¼"x5½", the front repainted. £350-500 - Sold for £320 to commission or postal bidder number 4238. Lot 83 A GWR nameboard, PONTDOLGOCH GROUND FRAME, from the Cambrian Line's Moat Lane to Machynlleth section. The station closed in 1965. Lot 84 A smokebox numberplate, 73153, from a BR Standard Class 5MT 4-6-0 built at Derby and allocated new on 24 May 1957 to St Rollox where it spent all its working life except a final month at Stirling from where it was withdrawn on 9 December 1966 and sold to Shipbreaking Industries at Faslane. Ex loco condition. £500-800 - Sold for £800. Lot 85 An LNER double royal poster, OLD WORLD MARKET PLACES, PETERBOROUGH, by Austin Cooper. Laid down on linen to conserve. £150-300 - Sold for £100. Lot 86 A GWR cabside numberplate, 9645, from a 8750 Class 0-6-0PT built at Swindon in April 1946. A long time Swansea East Dock engine, it spent its later years at Danygraig, Carmarthen and Goodwick but was officially stored unallocated when withdrawn in the week ending 28 September 1963 and cut up at Swindon Works. Cast iron, repainted. £250-400 - Sold for £320 to commission or postal bidder number 3403. Lot 87 A BR(ScR) totem sign, PRESTONPANS, (f/f), from the northern section of the East Coast main line. Some loss of shine though good colour. £400-600 - Sold for £860. Lot 88 A nameplate, SIR URRE OF THE MOUNT, with King Arthur Class appendage below, from the SR N15 Class 4-6-0 No 788, BR 30788, built by the North British Locomotive Co, Works No 23284, in September 1925 and named after the Hungarian Knight in Arthurian legend. An Eastleigh engine in BR days, it was withdrawn from there in February 1962 and cut up at Ashford Works. Cast brass, 52" long, the front restored. (See also next Lot) £6000-8000 - Sold for £6000. Lot 91 A North Eastern Railway notice giving the hours of opening to the public of the Goods Station, Monday-Friday and Saturdays, with provision for times to be added. Lot 92 A smokebox numberplate, 40081, from a LMS Class 3 2-6-2T No 81 built at Derby and allocated new to Longsight on 27 March 1935. Lot 94 A Great Western Railway, Social and Educational Union sporting cap. Blue with silver piping and a substantial silvered tassel the front embroidered GWR S&EU, 1930. Lot 116 A London & South Western Railway coat of arms headboard carried on the smokebox of the O2 Class locomotive No 185 on the opening day of the Borden to Bisley branch on 12th July 1890. The coat of arms is painted on wood, 20¾"x24", the back retains a steel fitting to attach to the lamp bracket. The headboard has been repainted though the original granulated texture is visible. Lot 126 A worksplate G. & S.W. 310 RAILWAY WORKS KILMARNOCK. From a Glasgow & South Western Railway 160 class 0-6-0 No 173 built in August 1898. Renumbered 171 in 1919 and taken into LMS stock in 1923. Allocated number 17196, but not carried. Sold in October 1926 to Kirkheaton Colliery Co Ltd, near Belsay, Northumberland. Repaired by Andrew Barclay at Kilmarnock before delivery in February 1927. The colliery at Kirkheaton was connected to the North Eastern Railway Ponteland branch at Darras Hill, some 8¾ miles distant. The colliery closed in 1930 and the locomotive stored until taken over by the Board of Trade, Mines Department in 1942. It was then overhauled at the LNER Darlington works and delivered in September 1942 to the Cambois Coal Stacking Site, adjacent to the LNER North Blyth branch, with the running number MD425. Sold to Backworth Collieries Ltd, in May 1946 and passed to the NCB in January 1947. Transferred to Seaton Delaval colliery in October 1949 and scrapped on site in July 1953. In 1924 this company became the Lambton, Hetton & Joicey Collieries Ltd. Passed to the NCB with the railway in January 1947 and continued to work at Hetton colliery and other locations on the Lambton Railway. Transferred to Dawdon Colliery around the beginning of 1960. Lot 347 A nameplate, HERMIT, from the LNER Gresley Class A1 4-6-2 No 4478 built at Doncaster, Works No 1570, in July 1923 and named after the winner of the 1867 Derby. It was rebuilt and re-classified to A3 Class in November 1943, renumbered 508 and then 109 in 1946, becoming BR 60109. Lot 378 A worksplate HUNSLET ENGINE, 1675 of 1931. From a standard gauge 0-6-0 side tank, one of two supplied new to the Underground group of companies for use on works trains. Numbered L30 and based at Lillie Bridge depot. Became part of the newly formed London Passenger Transport Board, District Line, in 1933 after which it was sometimes seen at the main depot at Neasden. Became London Transport in 1948. The older steam locomotives on London Transport were replaced by ex-GWR 57xx pannier tanks between 1957 and 1963 and L30 was withdrawn and scrapped in 1964. Lot 385 A Colne Valley Railway platform wall lamp with name glass BIRDBROOK, from the Chappel to Haverhill route which closed in 1962. The lamp is accompanied by a signal lamp interior from the same station with a location plate. £250-400 - Sold for £650. Lot 386 A worksplate, LONDON NORTH EASTERN RAILWAY, No 1842, DONCASTER, 1936, REBUILT 1944, from the LNER P2 Class 2-8-2 No 2006 built at Doncaster in September 1936, one of a class of six Mikados designed specifically for working the severely graded main line from Edinburgh to Aberdeen. All were given Scottish themed names, No 2006 being named WOLF OF BADENOCH after Sir Alexander Stewart, the Earl of Buchan, who earned this nickname by his harrowing raids on the bishopric of Moray. Allocated new to Haymarket, it moved to Aberdeen Ferryhill in November 1936, returning to Haymarket in October 1942. The whole class were converted to 4-6-2s and re-classified as Class A2/2 in 1943/4, this loco being rebuilt in May 1944. It remained at Haymarket in its new guise until moving south in November 1949 to New England from where it was withdrawn on 4 April 1961 and cut up at Doncaster Works. When the BR and its locos was absorbed by the GWR in 1922 it became GWR 273 and was rebuilt at Swindon with a Standard No 9 boiler in September 1929. It was withdrawn in November 1945. A handful of Patriots, Jubilees, Britannias and a solitary Princess Royal made up the 60 locos there during the 1960s, before it was recoded 1F. This ex GCR shed, formerly 40E had an allocation of 70 locos when using this code. The new diesel depot at Shirebrook adopted this code and a few of its 08 shunters may have carried such a plate. Lot 450 A smokebox numberplate, 63750, from a Robinson Great Central Railway type 2-8-0 built by the North British Locomotive Co, Works No 21798, in November 1917 to Ministry of Munitions order for the Railway Operating Division of the Royal Engineers, ROD No 1831. Loaned to the GWR in January 1920, their No 3088, it returned to the ROD in October 1922 to be stored at Beachley until passed to the LNER in December 1923 as their Class O4 No 6278, renumbered 3750 in 1946, becoming BR 63750. Allocated to Colwick by January 1948 and later Annesley, Mexborough, Doncaster, Langwith Junction, Immingham and finally back to Colwick from where it was withdrawn on 9 March 1964 and sold for scrap to A.
