A worksplate G. & S.W. 310 RAILWAY WORKS KILMARNOCK. From a Glasgow & South Western Railway 160 class 0-6-0 No 173 built in August 1898. Renumbered 171 in 1919 and taken into LMS stock in 1923. Allocated number 17196, but not carried. Sold in October 1926 to Kirkheaton Colliery Co Ltd, near Belsay, Northumberland. Repaired by Andrew Barclay at Kilmarnock before delivery in February 1927. The colliery at Kirkheaton was connected to the North Eastern Railway Ponteland branch at Darras Hill, some 8¾ miles distant. The colliery closed in 1930 and the locomotive stored until taken over by the Board of Trade, Mines Department in 1942. It was then overhauled at the LNER Darlington works and delivered in September 1942 to the Cambois Coal Stacking Site, adjacent to the LNER North Blyth branch, with the running number MD425. Sold to Backworth Collieries Ltd, in May 1946 and passed to the NCB in January 1947. Transferred to Seaton Delaval colliery in October 1949 and scrapped on site in July 1953. Engraved brass, 9½"x5½", in ex loco condition. £700-1000 |
