A nameplate, HERMIT, from the LNER Gresley Class A1 4-6-2 No 4478 built at Doncaster, Works No 1570, in July 1923 and named after the winner of the 1867 Derby. It was rebuilt and re-classified to A3 Class in November 1943, renumbered 508 and then 109 in 1946, becoming BR 60109. Allocated new to Doncaster in July 1923, it spent the whole of its working life in the Southern Area with spells at Grantham, Gorton, Copley Hill, New England, Doncaster and Kings Cross from where it was withdrawn in December 1962 and cut up at Doncaster Works. Cast brass, length 47½", the front repainted. £6000-8000 |
