A GWR cabside numberplate, 5097, from the 4073 Castle Class 4-6-0 built at Swindon in July 1939 and named SARUM CASTLE after the ancient monument of Old Sarum just north of Salisbury, Sarum being the Latin name for the Wiltshire city. Allocated to Shrewsbury by January 1948 and later Bristol Bath Road, Cardiff Canton and Cardiff East Dock from where it was withdrawn on 1 March 1963 and sold to Cashmores at Newport. Cast brass, the front repainted. £3000-4000 |
