Lot 1 A Tyers No. 6 single line tablet, ANNAT-GLENFINNAN, (brass), from the West Highland extension to Mallaig; the section includes the world famous Glenfinnan Viaduct. £250-400 - Sold for £800 to commission or postal bidder number 3794. Lot 2 A fingerboard from Birmingham Snow Hill, HENLEY-IN-ARDEN & STRATFORD-ON-AVON, wooden, 49"x8¼", original condition. £150-300 - Sold for £150. Lot 3 A BR(M) doorplate, DISTRICT ENGINEER, P. WAY, (f/f), enamel, 24"x6", chipping to the screw holes repainted. £200-350 - Sold for £340. Lot 4 A GWR cabside numberplate, 3214, from a 2251 Class 0-6-0 built at Swindon in December 1947. Allocated new to Worcester, it remained there until moving to Oswestry in September 1960 and then to Neyland but was officially unallocated upon withdrawal in the week ending 2 November 1963. It was sold for scrap to Hayes at Bridgend on 1 January 1964. Cast brass, in ex loco condition. £600-900 - Sold for £1600 to commission or postal bidder number 2095. Lot 5 A signal box nameboard, BLISWORTH, S.M.J. The box controlled the Stratford on Avon and Midland Junction station and yard at Blisworth adjacent to the West Coast Main line. Wood with cast letters, 77½"x10¼". The front repainted. £800-1200 - Sold for £850 to commission or postal bidder number 3142. Lot 6 A signalling release key, KINBRACE L.C. GATES. The station is north of Helmsdale on the far North Line to Wick and Thurso. £100-200 - Sold for £220. Lot 7 A BR(NE) doorplate, TICKET OFFICE, (f/f) enamel, 18"x6", one tiny rim chip repair, superb condition. £250-400 - Sold for £580. Lot 8 A GWR signal box diagram, ALVESCOT WEST BOX, 1896, from the Oxford to Fairford branch which closed in 1962 . The diagram is in its original frame, overall 19¾"x17". £200-350 - Sold for £300. Lot 9 A shedplate 65D Dawsholm (1949 to October 1964). This ex CR shed had an allocation of 50 locos during the 1950s. It also looked after the four pre group preserved engines, which it passed on to 65C Parkhead on closure. The front repainted. £100-200 - Sold for £360 to commission or postal bidder number 4493. Lot 10 A BR(Sc) totem sign, SPEAN BRIDGE, (h/f) from the West Highland line to Fort William and Mallaig, once junction for the Fort Augustus branch. Loss of shine and a little mottling. £700-1000 - Sold for £1450 to commission or postal bidder number 4493. Lot 11 A LNER silver plated lobster pick by Gladwin, 7½" long. £80-120 - Sold for £55. Lot 12 A Great Northern Railway (Ireland) lamp tablet, TANDRAGEE, a station between Portadown and Dundalk. Cast iron, 16"x3¾", in original condition. £150-300 - Sold for £320. Lot 13 A worksplate, English Electric/VF 2772/D467 1959 from Class 40 D250,later 40050. New to Gateshead in December 1959; withdrawn from Longsight in August 1983 and cut up at Doncaster Works in November 1983. Chromed cast brass, 10¼"x4½", in ex loco condition. £300-500 - Sold for £640. Lot 14 A GWR three aspect copper top handlamp, with brass retaining edge for the glass, the lens marked GWR. The side has a brass plate, 4713, and is stamped Swindon and GWR: the aspect ring stamped GWR Z. The lamp has a Bartons burner, stamped GWR and copper vessel, stamped GWR and S6. A lovely example expertly restored £100-200 - Sold for £150. Lot 15 A Kitson and Sons First World War Railway Service badge by Fattorini, enamelled brass, 1" diameter. £100-200 - Sold for £540. Lot 16 A LMS lamp tablet, MONTPELIER, from the Bristol to Avonmouth Dock branch. Enamel 16"x4½", one tiny face chip. £150-300 - Sold for £220. Lot 17 A GREAT CENTRAL RAILWAY DINING CAR, silver plated hot water jug by Walker and Hall, 4½" tall. £100-200 - Sold for £160. Lot 18 A smokebox numberplate, 1474, from a GWR Collett 0-4-2T built at Swindon in April 1936. Numbered 4874 when built, it was renumbered 1474 in November 1946. At Machynlleth by January 1948, its later sheds were Southall, Weymouth, Reading, Slough, Gloucester LMR and Gloucester WR from where it was withdrawn in the week ending 12 September 1964 and sold for scrap to Birds Commercial Motors at Morriston on 27 October 1964. The front repainted. £400-600 - Sold for £900 to commission or postal bidder number 991. Lot 19 A BR(M), totem sign, THRELKELD, (face fixing), from the Cockermouth, Keswick and Penrith route, the eastern section closing in 1972. Superb condition. £800-1200 - Sold for £1750. Lot 20 A worksplate, BEYER PEACOCK, 1908, from a Taff Vale Railway Class O4 0-6-2T No 105 built by Beyer Peacock, Works No 5132, in June 1908. When the Railway and its locos was absorbed by the GWR in January 1922 it became GWR 236. At Abercynon by January 1948 and later Treherbert and Barry from where it was withdrawn on 12 January 1953 and cut up at Swindon Works during the four weeks ending 18 April 1953. Cast brass, 9¾"x 5¾", the front repainted. £200-350 - Sold for £100. Lot 21 A BR(S) signal box nameboard, MERSTHAM, (f/f) from the Victoria to Brighton main line. Enamel, 60"x12", edge and face chips in places. £150-300 - Sold for £540. Lot 22 A smokebox numberplate, 44345, from a LMS Class 4F 0-6-0 No 4345 built by Kerr Stuart, Works No 4373, in 1927. At Edge Hill by January 1935, its later sheds were Willesden, Walsall, Tebay, Carnforth, Barrow and Heaton Mersey from where it was withdrawn in the week ending 21 December 1963 and despatched for scrap to A. Loom at Spondon on 2 November 1964. The front repainted. £300-500 - Sold for £400. Lot 23 A pair of LMS HOTELS silver plated cake tongs, decorative, 9¼" long. £100-200 - Sold for £150. Lot 24 A (GWR) cabside numberplate, 1660, from a 1600 Class 0-6-0PT built at Swindon and allocated new on 23 February 1955 to Croes Newydd where it spent all its working life until withdrawal on 22 February 1966. It was sold for scrap to Cashmores at Great Bridge, entering their yard on 26 September 1966. Cast brass, the front repainted. £500-800 - Sold for £700 to commission or postal bidder number 1680. Lot 25 A GWR brass cased drum clock by KAY & Co of Paris. The case and movement stamped, 4348, the enamel face in excellent condition. The clock runs when wound, but requires cleaning. £150-300 - Sold for £460 to commission or postal bidder number 2963. Lot 26 A shedplate 82E Yeovil Pen Mill (1949 to February 1958), then Bristol Barrow Road (February 1958 to November 1965). The ex GWR shed at Yeovil housed just 10 locos during this period. It was transferred from the WR to the SR becoming 71H, finally closing in January 1959. The ex Midland shed at Barrow Road, Bristol was transferred from the MR (22A) to the WR in 1958. At this time its allocation of around 50 locos included 3 Patriots and 9 Jubilees. However, by 1965 the depot had been “westernised” with an allocation that included 11 Halls and 2 Granges in its total of 40 locos. Repainted. £100-200 - Sold for £180. Lot 27 A North Eastern Railway platform lamp case with name, THORNTON DALE, on a frosted glass panel, with blue lettering, one crack, 24" overall height. The station was on the Pickering to Seamer route, which closed to passengers in 1950. £300-500 - Sold for £530. Lot 28 A London and North Western Railway semaphore signal repeater, the case engraved LNWR Electrical Department, Crewe. £100-200 - Sold for £150. Lot 29 A worksplate, DUBS, 3526, 1897, from a London & South Western Railway 700 Class 0-6-0 built in May 1897 and originally numbered 703 but renumbered 308 in July 1898. It retained this number in Southern Railway days and became BR 30308. It spent almost all its BR days at Guildford from where it was withdrawn in the week ending 23 September 1961 and cut up at Eastleigh Works in the week ending 14 October 1961. Cast brass, 13¼"x5 ½", the front lightly cleaned. £400-600 - Sold for £740. Lot 30 A BR(W) station sign, ENGINEMEN MUST NOT DISCHARGE WATER FROM ENGINES WHEN STANDING ON THIS BRIDGE, (f/f), enamel, 54"x24", small face chips. £150-300 - Sold for £300 to commission or postal bidder number 4573. Lot 31 A nameplate, AULD REEKIE, from the Peppercorn A1 Class 4-6-2 No 60160 built at Doncaster, Works No 2054, in December 1949, taking its name from the nickname for the odorous Old Town in Edinburgh. Allocated new to Haymarket on 2 December 1949, it spent virtually all its working life there with a short spell at Polmadie and a final few months at St Margarets from where it was withdrawn on 12 December 1963 and cut up at Darlington Works. Cast brass, 58" long, the front repainted but unpolished. £8000-12000 - Sold for £12600. Lot 32 A plate from a LMS coach recording its inclusion in The Royal Scot Tour of America and Canada in 1933. Ivorine, 6"x4", original condition. £50-80 - Sold for £300. Lot 33 A BR(E) totem sign, HEELEY,( h/f), from the Sheffield to Chesterfield route; the station closed in 1968. Excellent colour and shine, blemishes in places. £400-600 - Sold for £1000 to commission or postal bidder number 7166. Lot 34 A nameplate, CRIGGION, from a 0-6-0ST built by Kitson, Works No 5476, in 1936. It went new to Stewarts & Lloyds at Corby Steelworks as their No 48. In November 1949 it moved to nearby Corby Collieries, which became part of British Steel in 1968, and was scrapped on site by George Cohen in October 1969. Cast brass, 28¾x6", the front repainted. (See also next Lot) £800-1200 - Sold for £600. Lot 35 A worksplate, KITSON, 5476, 1936, from a 0-6-0ST named CRIGGION. Cast brass, 12¾"x8", the front repainted. (see previous Lot for loco history) £500-800 - Sold for £1600. Lot 36 A Hull and Barnsley Railway boundary post, cast iron, 55" tall, repainted. We sold this post some years ago; it is the only known example. £400-600 - Sold for £800. Lot 37 A single line key token, ARROCHAR-GLEN DOUGLAS, from the West Highland line to Fort William and Mallaig. £100-200 - Sold for £100. Lot 38 A worksplate, GREAT NORTHERN RAILWAY, 1386, 1913, from a GNR Class J22 0-6-0 No 551 which became LNER J6 Class No 3551 and was renumbered 4200 in 1946, becoming BR 64200. A long time Colwick engine, it was withdrawn from there on 10 February 1958 and cut up at Doncaster Works. Fully engraved brass, 12¼"x7½", cleaned, the front lightly polished. £500-800 - Sold for £860. Lot 39 A BR(W) double royal poster, ABERYSTWYTH, by Harry Arthur Riley, (1895-1966). A little wear to top left edge, a nick repaired top centre, rolled. (PR145) £150-300 - Sold for £290. Lot 40 A signal box nameboard, FINCHLEY ROAD, from a box on the Midland main line between St Pancras and Cricklewood. Cast letters on wood, 69½"x10¼", repainted. £150-300 - Sold for £320. Lot 41 A LNER Coronation pattern silver plated tea set by Walker and Hall comprising tea pot, milk jug, hot water jug and sugar bowl on an oval tray, all marked with the LNER high speed logo. Lot 43 A GWR signal box shelf plate, HONEYBOURNE STN. NORTH BRANCH LINES, from the junction on the Oxford to Worcester main line with the Stratford on Avon to Cheltenham route. Engraved brass, 4¾"x1½". £100-200 - Sold for £150. Lot 44 A Great Northern Railway lampmans yoke, GNR, HORTON PARK, shaped wood with original paintwork and chains, 35" long, original condition. The station was on the Bradford to Halifax route and closed in 1952. £80-120 - Sold for £270. Lot 45 A South Eastern and Chatham Railway notice referring to the use of occupation crossing by farmers and their servants. Cast iron, 22"x17", repainted. £100-200 - Sold for £190. Lot 46 A depot plaque for Crewe diesel depicting a leaping cat. Cast aluminium, 17¾" square, ex loco condition. £150-300 - Sold for £350 to commission or postal bidder number 2181. Lot 47 A section of GWR signal lever description plate from Yatton signal box, referring to CHEDDAR BRANCH and CLEVEDON BAY, engraved brass, 15¾"x4", mounted on a polished wood block. £150-300 - Sold for £820. Lot 48 A worksplate, LONDON & NORTH EASTERN RAILWAY, 92, DARLINGTON, 1924, from a LNER K3 Class 2-6-0 No 92 built at Darlington in November 1924. It was renumbered 1826 in 1946 and became BR 61826. Allocated to Colwick by January 1948, its later sheds were March, Norwich, Staveley GC and finally back to Colwick from where it was withdrawn on 16 September 1962 and sold for scrap to Cashmores at Great Bridge, taken by them on 21 February 1963. Cast iron, 9"x5", in ex loco condition. £150-300 - Sold for £440. Lot 49 A BR(NE) station sign, ENQUIRIES, PARCELS, LEFT LUGGAGE, (f/f), enamel, 24"x 12", a chip to the left edge and two tiny edge chips. £300-500 - Sold for £640. Lot 50 A BR(W) double royal poster, ACCELERATION OF TRAIN SERVICE, PADDINGTON-BIRMINGHAM, by AN Wolstenholme, a view of King class 6028 at speed. Edge wear repairs in places. Lot 51 A LMS three aspect handlamp with a large embossed brass plate, THE PROPERTY OF THE LM&S RAILWAY COMPANY, 2¾"x1½"; the lamp lacks its rear catch. £50-80 - Sold for £110. Lot 52 A BR(W) station sign, PASSENGERS MUST NOT CROSS THE LINE EXCEPT BY MEANS OF THE BRIDGE, (f/f) enamel, 17¾"x9", edge chips repainted. £80-120 - Sold for £480. Lot 53 A Southern Railway target sign, HAMPTON, from the Strawberry Hill to Shepperton branch; edge and screw hole chips as is usual. £350-500 - Sold for £500. Lot 54 A shed plate 9G Northwich (1949 to February 1958), then Gorton (February 1958 to June 1965). The ex CLC shed at Northwich housed 40 locos during this period, three of which were ex GCR 4-4-0 Directors. It was then recoded 8E in 1958. The ex GCR shed at Gorton was transferred from the ER (39A) and all 110 of its charges carried the 9G code until closure in 1965. Repainted. £100-200 - Sold for £260. Lot 55 A BR(W) signal box name board, EVESHAM ROAD CROSSING, the box situated south of Stratford on Avon station. Embossed aluminium, 77½"x9", repainted. £150-300 - Sold for £600. Lot 56 A Tyers No.6 single line tablet, MOORHOUSE-WRANGBROOK JCT, (fibre) from the former Hull and Barnsley route, retained until 1963 for coal traffic. £80-120 - Sold for £220 to commission or postal bidder number 7815. Lot 57 An Underground Railways quad royal poster, THE PETER PAN MAP, by Macdonald Gill, (1884-1947) showing London as featured in the book. Edge nicks, an unusual example. £150-300 - Sold for £620. Lot 58 A tenderplate, LONDON & NORTH EASTERN RAILWAY 8177, GATESHEAD, 1899, from a North Eastern Railway tender paired new with NER Class P, LNER J24 Class, 0-6-0 No 1958 withdrawn in July 1943, although considerable changing took place within the Class and with other classes. Cast brass, 9"x5". £100-200 - Sold for £100. Lot 59 A BR(S) totem sign, SELSDON, (f/f), from the Croydon to Oxted route. Two small face chips restored. £250-400 - Sold for £720. Lot 60 A worksplate, 2130, DARLINGTON, 1950 from a (LMS) Class 4 2-6-0 No 43088 allocated new on 1 December 1950 to New England where it stayed for more than twelve years. Its later sheds were Barrow Hill, Crewe South, Stoke and Lostock Hall from where it was withdrawn in the week ending 23 December 1967 and despatched for scrap to Campbells at Airdrie on 7 March 1968. Engraved brass, 12"x6¼", the front lightly polished. £350-500 - Sold for £340. Lot 61 A single line key token, COPPLESTONE-MORCHARD ROAD, (alloy), the first of six sections on the route to Barnstaple. After Morchard Road box closed the section became Copplestone to Lapford. A small part has been milled from the back of the key end. £100-200 - Sold for £150. Lot 62 A GWR booking office crush barrier, comprising two ornate ribbed cast iron columns and a shaped wooden bar. Overall height 38½", length 45", cleaned, the pillars repainted, the wood polished. £100-200 - Sold for £380. Lot 63 A South African Railways three chamber chime whistle. Cast brass, 14½" tall, 4" diameter, lightly cleaned. £300-500 - Sold for £440. Lot 64 A BR(S) totem sign, SHEERNESS-ON-SEA, (f/f), the terminus of the branch from Sittingbourne. Minor rim chips. £350-500 - Sold for £660. Lot 65 A nameplate, CANADA, from a LMS Jubilee Class 6P 4-6-0 No 5553, the second of the Class built at Crewe and allocated new to Camden in May 1934. It was named in March 1937 and became BR 45553. A much travelled loco, its later sheds included Rugby, Longsight, Crewe South and Crewe North from where it was withdrawn in the week ending 7 November 1964 and despatched for scrap to T W Ward at Beighton on 11 February 1965. Cast brass, 29" long, the front repainted. £8000-10000 - Sold for £11800 to commission or postal bidder number 8283. Lot 66 A station notice PARCELS, with a pointing hand to the right, from Hull Cannon Street, the terminus of the Hull and Barnsley Railway. Cast iron, 35½"x6", original condition. £150-300 - Sold for £160. Lot 67 A worksplate BRCW DEL 181 1961, from Class 33 D6577 later 33058. New to Hither Green in November 1961; withdrawn from Stewarts Lane in June 1991 and cut up by CF Booth at Rotherham in June 1994. Chromed cast brass, 8"x4¾", ex loco condition. £500-800 - Sold for £700. Lot 68 A GWR Tyers train describer from Birmingham complete with clockwork mechanism and brass peg, descriptions include Snow Hill, Moor Street, Stourbridge, Great Bridge, North Warwickshire etc. Original condition. £500-800 - Sold for £2150. Lot 69 A carriage print, CROWN JEWELS STOLEN BY COLONEL BLOOD, 1671, by Harry Winslade, from the LMR Historical series of 1955. £80-120 - Sold for £110 to commission or postal bidder number 3500. Lot 70 A NORTH EASTERN RAILWAY, STATION HOTEL, NEWCASTLE, silver plated domed serving dish, a fine example with non matching base, which is the correct size. Overall 10"x7". £150-300 - Sold for £50. Lot 71 A BR(Sc) totem sign, RIDDINGS JUNCTION, (f/f), from the southern section of the Waverley route, which closed in 1969. A couple of small face chips at the base of the lower panel. £1000-1500 - Sold for £1750 to commission or postal bidder number 4493. Lot 72 A GWR cabside numberplate, 9777, from a 8750 Class 0-6-0PT built at Swindon in March 1936. A long time Landore engine, it moved in June 1961 to Neath Court Sart from where it was withdrawn on 6 May 1964 and sold for scrap to Birds Commercial Motors at Bynea the following 22 June. Cast iron, in ex loco condition. £300-500 - Sold for £660. Lot 73 A Lancashire and Yorkshire Railway doorplate, P.WAY DEPT, cast iron, 15"x4", the front repainted. £80-120 - Sold for £200. Lot 74 A worksplate, KITSON, 1903, 1873, from a 3ft 9ins gauge 4-6-0T No 2 (formerly named FOWLER) supplied new to the Bilbao Iron Ore Co Ltd in Northern Spain for use on the line which connected the iron ore mines near Galdames to Staithes at La Iberia near Sestao. There was considerable cannibalisation of parts with the result that several locos did not necessarily carry their original identities. By the mid-1960s there was little iron ore traffic and sometime after then the loco was scrapped. Engraved brass, 10¾"x6½", the front lightly polished. £400-600 - Sold for £3300. Lot 75 A BR(M) double royal poster, THE ENGLISH LAKES, 1956, by David William Burley, (1879-1957), rolled. (LM13656) £150-300 - Sold for £200. Lot 76 A shedplate 88H Tondu (January 1961 to March 1964). Formerly 86F, this ex GWR shed housed around 40 locos during the early 1960s. Ex loco condition. £100-200 - Sold for £160 to commission or postal bidder number 2506. Lot 77 A BR(S) totem sign, MOTTINGHAM, (f/f), from the Hither Green to Dartford via Sidcup route. Excellent condition. £300-400 - Sold for £480 to commission or postal bidder number 8279. Lot 78 A smokebox numberplate, 90470, from a War Department Austerity 2-8-0 built to Ministry of Supply order by Vulcan Foundry, Works No 5067, in August 1944, WD No 78665. Loaned to the LNER in December 1945, becoming LNER O7 Class No 3149 and allocated to Colwick and Mexborough. It became BR 63149 in 1948 and was renumbered 90470 the following year. Its BR sheds included Hull Springhead, Sowerby Bridge and Wakefield from where it was withdrawn on 21 December 1966 and cut up by Drapers at Hull in the week ending 25 March 1967. In ex loco condition with blue paintwork. £400-600 - Sold for £700 to commission or postal bidder number 3784. Lot 79 A GWR bridge weight restriction notice, dated 1874. Cast iron, 31"x16½, repainted. £100-200 - Sold for £80. Lot 80 A nameplate, PITSFORD, from a standard gauge 0-6-0ST built by Avonside, Works No 1917, and new in December 1923 to Pitsford Ironstone Co at Pitsford Quarries, Northamptonshire. The company became part of Staveley Minerals Ltd in March 1961 and was taken over by Byfield Ironstone Co from September 1962. After the Quarries closed in August 1965 this loco was acquired for preservation by Mr E.E. Kimbell of Boughton in July 1966 and later went to the Fawley Hill Railway where it remained until 1972. It then went to the Nene Valley Railway and, following renaming as THE EARL FITZWILLIAM, it moved to the Elsecar Heritage Railway near Barnsley where it resides today, awaiting overhaul. Cast brass, 35"x6¼", the front repainted. £700-1000 - Sold for £3000. Lot 81 A flamecut number panel 40014, from the Class 40 ANTONIA, formerly D214. New as EE/VF 2670/D431 in June 1959 to Willesden; withdrawn from Longsight in November 1981 and cut up at Swindon Works in November 1983. 33"x12", original condition. £150-300 - Sold for £260. Lot 82 A signal box nameboard, STOKE WORKS JUNCTION, from the Birmingham to Bristol main line, the junction just south of Bromsgrove for the Worcester route. Cast letters on wood with beading, 81"x10½", repainted. £200-350 - Sold for £340. Lot 83 A shedplate 9J Agecroft (September 1963 to October 1966). This ex LYR shed, formerly 26B, housed just 25 locos when using this code. Repainted. £100-200 - Sold for £140. Lot 84 A mid-19th century, NER, wall-hanging, longcase clock. Overall height: 56". The stripped pine case with truncated chisel base, front door with lock (no key) and two side doors. One-piece dial surround permanently fixed to the box and containing a replaced pressed brass bezel with clip-in sight ring. 12 inch dial written Reid & Sons Newcastle on Tyne, a regular supplier to the NER. Good quality weight driven deadbeat regulator movement housed between tapered plates. With drive to a slave dial modified to turn 90 degrees and pass through a side door rather than the hole present in the backboard. Seat board present but movement held by feet via the dial screwed into the surround. No indication where it was used. Complete with seconds pendulum with ebony rod and zinc cylindrical bob, rectangular cast iron weight with leading edge curved to conform with the case base and cranked winder. £700-1000 - Sold for £300. Lot 85 A group of Colliery wagonplates; (a) West Sharlston; (b) South Hindley; and (c) South Kirkby, each 6¾"x4½", tinplate. (3) £50-80 - Sold for £160. Lot 86 A BR(M) totem sign, WEST ALLERTON, (f/f) from the Liverpool to Edge Hill and Widnes route. Some loss of shine to the lettering and minor blemishes. £200-350 - Sold for £390. Lot 87 A GREAT WESTERN RAILWAY HOTELS silver plated bread basket by Walker and Hall, 13" long. £80-120 - Sold for £110. Just surviving into BR days, it was withdrawn from Didcot on 27 September 1948 and cut up at Swindon Works. Lot 117 A late 19th century English wire fusee movement probably from an NER clock used at York. Now in a traditionally made mahogany drop dial case built in 2005 and in good condition. Overall height: 13¼". The eight-day movement between rectangular plates with anchor escapement. Dial, cast brass bezel with silvered sight ring and blued spade hands all original to the movement. The 8" dial bearing the shadow of the number 6578, now covered by a secondary dial written L.N.E.R 6578. Records indicate that this clock was used in the Ladies Waiting Room, No. 14, on York station. Lot 138 A worksplate, SHARP STEWART, 4152, 1896, from a 3ft 6ins gauge South African Railways Class 7A 4-8-0 No 995, originally Cape Government Railways No 392, one of a batch of eight supplied by Sharp Stewart. The Class was designed by H.M. Beatty, the Cape Government Railways’ Chief Locomotive Superintendent, and was a great success some lasting in service for almost eighty years. They were conceived as heavy goods locomotives and continued the attractive appearance of the Cape's locomotives. Allocated new to Old Oak Common on 21 February 1950, it moved at the end of 1951 to Oxford where it spent the remainder of its working life. It spent most of its working life at Old Oak Common, shunting empty coaching stock in and out of Paddington, with spells at Reading and Southall, finishing its days at Bristol Barrow Road from where it was withdrawn in the week ending 12 June 1965 and sold for scrap to T.W. Lot 169 A late 19th century 14 inch CLC roundhead clock in ex-station condition in an ebonised mahogany case. Used in Hunts Cross Booking Office originally also driving a slave dial on the platform. Overall height: 17½". The two piece dial surround containing a replaced clip-in spun brass bezel. The box with original tip-up side door, bottom door replaced by a metal flap. Backboard split and containing a hole through which the slave drive passed. The left side bearing a BR (M) oval brass number plate stamped 18328. The dial with minor damage and written 18328 rather crudely over the shadow of W. McFerran, Victoria St., Manchester and a rubbed area where CLC and the company’s reference number were probably written. This is a typical McFerran clock; he was a regular supplier to the MS&L and associated companies such as the CLC. Substantial, rather dirty, chain fusee movement held between tapered plates and with the drive for a slave. Complete with replaced pendulum and winder. Allocated to Heaton by January 1948, it spent most of its BR days at Gateshead, moving towards the end to West Auckland and Thornaby from where it was withdrawn on 28 September 1961 and cut up at Darlington Works. It became WD 318 and then in October 1941 Persian Railways’ 41 117. At the end of the War it was transferred by rail through Iraq and Syria to Egypt where it was renumbered WD 70318. On return to the UK it became BR 48250 in October 1949 and during its career was allocated to Bescot, Northwich, Toton, Speke Junction and Agecroft. Standard LNER (GER) number plate marked 3797 inside the side door. Two piece dial surround housing a cast brass bezel with silvered sight ring and fixed to the box with four original pegs. Inner surfaces of the box covered with green baize - a common GER feature. The dial written L.N.E.R. E, some letters stencilled. The rear of the dial marked GER. Attractive spade hands. Chain fusee movement held between rectangular plates and with half-dead escapement. Lot 215 A locomotive headboard, CAMBRIAN COAST EXPRESS, as carried on the Paddington to Aberystwyth and Pwllheli service. This style of headboard was introduced in the Summer of 1953 and carried until superseded by crested headboards in Summer 1958. Cast aluminium, 40½"x18½", the back showing the names of ten other trains which carried the same size headboard, The Flying Scotsman heading the list. Lot 216 A smokebox numberplate, 31835, from a South Eastern & Chatham Railway N Class 2-6-0 No A835 assembled by the Southern Railway at Ashford Works in July 1924 from parts produced at Woolwich Arsenal, except the boiler which came from the North British Locomotive Co. Later renumbered 1835, it became BR 31835. A long time Exmouth Junction engine, it was withdrawn from there during the week ending 5 September 1964 and sold for scrap to Birds Commercial Motors at Morriston the following 14 October. Lot 217 A worksplate, LONDON NORTH EASTERN RAILWAY, 4864, DARLINGTON, 1940, from a LNER V2 Class 2-6-2 No 4864 built at Darlington in January 1940. It was renumbered 893 in 1946 and became BR 60893. Apart from a year at Grantham in the late 1950s, it spent all its BR days at New England from where it was withdrawn on 23 September 1962 and entered Doncaster Works for cutting up on 12 December 1962. Fully engraved brass, 13½"x7½", the front polished. One of the few known examples of this style of V2 worksplate displaying the running number. (See also next Lot) £1700-2000 - Sold for £1800. Overall height: 17¼" The mahogany box with veneer damage, a small section of the base missing, bottom door replaced, damage to the side door and evidence that it once had ears to the drop. The rear branded L&Y twice, the left side with many pin holes, a common feature of LYR clocks, steel plate stamped 921 on the top and pin holes on the front probably where an LMS oval brass number plate was once fixed. One piece dial surround containing an old spun brass bezel with sight ring now held with solder. 10 inch dial written L.M.S Joyce Whitchurch 9142, a number repeated in the back of the dial and scratched into the movement front plate. Wire fusee movement held between shaped plates with feet. Complete with replaced pendulum, winder and framed receipt for its purchase from Collectors Corner in 1983. Withdrawn from service stock in October 1964, it was renumbered 59 in Departmental Stock and allocated to North Blyth. It was condemned on 18 September 1966 whereupon it was acquired by Mr R Ainsworth who had it repainted in NER green and named it JOEM. Between 1977 and 1979 it operated a summer only passenger service on the Derwent Valley Light Railway in North Yorkshire. It is currently on loan to the Keighley & Worth Valley Preservation Society. This ex GWR/LNWR Joint shed was home to a wide variety of classes in the 1950, including GWR pre grouping 0-6-0 pannier tanks, and Granges as well as the exotic LMS 0-6-0 2F tanks in its total of 100 locos. It became 8H in 1963, when ex GWR shed Croes Newydd, formerly 84J then 89B, took on this code. At Heaton by January 1948, it was later allocated to all three Hull MPDs in turn before finishing its days at Tyne Dock from where it was withdrawn on 2 October 1961 and cut up at Darlington Works. Fully engraved brass, 13½"x7¾", the front lightly polished. Lot 268 A nameplate, PHILIP, from a standard gauge 0-6-0DH built by Sentinel, Works No 10107, in 1963 which went new to Lysaght's Scunthorpe Works (British Steel Corporation as from 28 July 1967). Sent to Thomas Hill at Rotherham on 1 March 1977 and overhauled before moving to BSC Tinsley Park. It later returned to Thomas Hill and was extensively rebuilt before sale in 1987 to Peakstone Ltd, Dove Holes Quarry, near Buxton. When the NER became part of the LNER it was classified as Class J28 and renumbered 2408 under the LNER 1924 renumbering scheme. It was withdrawn in October 1938. Lot 378 A GNR three aspect handlamp with brass plate, GREAT NORTHERN RAILWAY, HIGH BARNET, and relocation plate, MARCH. The lamp has been restored and is complete with its original doughnut shape vessel and a metal gauze burner surround, the body and top stamped with the company initials. The station was the terminus of the branch from Finchley, which was transferred to London Underground in 1962. £200-350 - Sold for £340. Lot 380 A smokebox numberplate, 30586 from a London & South Western Railway Beattie 2-4-0 Well Tank No 329 built by Beyer Peacock, Works No 1538, in November 1875. It was reboilered in 1892 and was only one of three to survive beyond 1900. All three were allocated to Wadebridge for working the Wenford Bridge line. It was again reboilered in 1922 and, at the grouping, entered SR stock as No 0329 and was classified as 0298 Class after the lowest number of the three survivors. It retained this number until renumbered 3329 in 1935 and became BR 30586. All three survivors were withdrawn in December 1962 when they were replaced by GWR 1366 Class tanks. The other two, 30585 and 30587, are preserved and are believed to carry their BR smokebox numberplates. Thus 30586 is the only numberplate available from one of these much loved locos. The former GWR depot at East Dock was home to 60 locos in the 1950s which included an exotic collection of antiquated tank engines. The depot was run down and lost its allocation in 1958, but was to rise from the ashes in September 1962, now coded 88L, when it inherited all of Cardiff Cantons steam allocation; Castles, Halls, Granges and Manors now graced the shed. Dial surround of standard sectional construction housing a replaced spun bezel with clip-in sight ring. 12 inch dial recently repainted and re-written. Chain fusee movement between rectangular plates with screwed pillars and stamped 945 horizontally on the rear plate. This code is probably best known for its use as Carlisle Upperby, the ex LNWR shed having around 90 locos at the height of its importance. The ex NBR shed at Canal had the distinction of having four A3s and five D49s carrying this LMR code among its 60 occupants. Circa 1949 it moved to Gibbs and Canning Ltd at Glascote Tileries near Tamworth and then in September 1952 to New Cransley Iron and Steel Company at Kettering. In 1960 the site and locos at Cransley was acquired by George Cohen who used it as a scrapyard. The loco remained there until March 1966 when it was scrapped. Lot 436 A nameplate, TOCKENHAM COURT, from the GWR 2900 Saint Class 4-6-0 No 2954 built at Swindon in April 1913 and named after the court nine miles from Swindon. It spent its final years at Swindon from where it was withdrawn on 8 July 1952 and cut up at the nearby Works in the four weeks ending 6 September 1952. Lot 438 A mid-19th century stripped pine wall-hanging NER longcase clock probably from the Richmond (Yorks.) area in moderate condition. Overall height: 71". The case, originally false grained to resemble oak, now stripped, except inside the door. The back and base replaced with plywood. The whole of the front hinged and with two glazed panels one revealing the 12 inch dial written Darling & Wood, York, a regular supplier to the NER. Door lock present but lacking mechanism. A number of paper notices etc. pasted inside the door, most very faded but one detailing Polo at Catterick Bridge, another a presentation by the Richmond stationmaster. Weight-driven, seconds-beating movement between rectangular plates joined by knopped pillars with drive for a slave, complete but dirty and needing work. They were the last class of Garratt to remain in service with the SAR and all but three were withdrawn from service by April 1988. Lot 466 A worksplate, HAWTHORN LESLIE, 3138, 1915, from a standard gauge 0-6-0ST, HOLWELL No 14, delivered new on 23 August 1915 to Holwell Iron Co at Buckminster Quarries. The loco was transferred to Glendon Quarries in 1928 but became an early victim of the contraction of the industry. After a full rebuild in 1958 at Corby Works, the locomotive was sent on 17 August 1962 in full working order for scrap to Goodman Brothers at New Bradwell in Buckinghamshire. It remained there until recovered in the mid-1980s as part of an abortive restoration project and, although the loco was taken apart, little restoration was carried out. It returned to the East Midlands on 5 October 2007 and currently resides at the Rocks by Rail Museum at Cottesmore. Cast brass, 13"x8½", the front lightly cleaned. £250-400 - Sold for £300. Lot 472 A German cabside numberplate, 38.2265 from a Prussian standard gauge P8 Class mixed traffic 4-6-0 built by Henschel, Works No 15689, in 1918, and delivered new to the Koblenz depot with Prussian number Cöln 2478. In 1925 it received the existing number 38.2265 - the number plate is actually from the second set of cabside plates as produced for Deutsche Bundesbahn. In August 1930 the engine moved to Münster then to Delmenhorst. In the early 1950s it was shedded at Wuppertal and worked from Wuppertal to Langerfeld. From June 1958 it was at Bestwig and was withdrawn on 12 November 1962. Steel with numbers riveted to backplate, 28"x8", in ex loco condition. £150-300 - Sold for £200. The lamp is unrestored and complete with LNER doughnut shape vessel and interior fittings, unrestored, the front lens cracked. Lot 479 A pair of decorative rosettes from Blackfriars Bridge, diameter 14" and 9", in original condition, together with a pair of SE&CR bridge numberplate, 410A and 412, steel with cutout characters, repainted. £100-200 - Sold for £200. Lot 480 A smokebox numberplate, 9421, from a (GWR) 9400 Class 0-6-0PT built by Robert Stephenson & Hawthorns, Works No 7558, in July 1950. Allocated new on 7 July 1950 to Slough where it spent all its working life. Withdrawn from Slough on 12 February 1962, it was sold for scrap to Cashmores at Newport, entering their yard on 3 July 1962. Allocated to Tondu by January 1948, its later sheds were Cardiff Canton, Aberdare and Radyr from where it was withdrawn in the week ending 8 May 1965 and sold for scrap to Hayes at Bridgend the following 16 June. Lot 485 A shedplate 70D Basingstoke (1950 to September 1963) then Eastleigh (closed to steam July 1967). The ex LSWR shed at Basingstoke was most noted for being home to the Remembrance 4-6-0s in its small allocation in the 1950s. Eastleigh, also ex LSWR, took over the code when Basingstoke lost its allocation. Basingstoke however remained open for servicing until the end of SR steam. Eastleigh’s allocation of 100 locos contained no fewer than 36 Bullied Light Pacifics during this period. Repainted, the back marked, 29. £100-200 - Sold for £160.
