Auction Catalogue: Great Central Railwayana, 3 September 2016
Lot 380 |
A smokebox numberplate, 30586 from a London & South Western Railway Beattie 2-4-0 Well Tank No 329 built by Beyer Peacock, Works No 1538, in November 1875. It was reboilered in 1892 and was only one of three to survive beyond 1900. All three were allocated to Wadebridge for working the Wenford Bridge line. It was again reboilered in 1922 and, at the grouping, entered SR stock as No 0329 and was classified as 0298 Class after the lowest number of the three survivors. It retained this number until renumbered 3329 in 1935 and became BR 30586. All three survivors were withdrawn in December 1962 when they were replaced by GWR 1366 Class tanks. The other two, 30585 and 30587, are preserved and are believed to carry their BR smokebox numberplates. Thus 30586 is the only numberplate available from one of these much loved locos. Repainted, the BR(S), E, Eastleigh triangle cast in the back. £1500-2500 |
