Lot 1 Wagonplates: Eaton Railway, 46, 1903.
A wagonplate, EATON RAILWAY, 46, 1903, from a goods wagon used on the 15" gauge 4½ mile long railway built in 1896 for the 1st Duke of Westminster to transport coal and other materials from sidings at Balderton station on the Shrewsbury-Chester line to the Duke's estate at Eaton Hall in Cheshire. It closed in 1946 but was reinstated as a tourist attraction in 1996. Cast brass, 6¼"x4¼", the front repainted. £200-350 - Sold for £540 to bidder number 2991

Lot 5 Worksplates (Steam): NBL, 21906, 1918 (63816).
A worksplate, NORTH BRITISH LOCOMOTIVE Co, QUEENS PARK WORKS, 21906, 1918, from a Robinson Great Central type 2-8-0 built in June 1918 to Ministry of Munitions order for the Railway Operating Division of the Royal Engineers, ROD No 1929. Loaned to the Great Eastern Railway, it was returned to the ROD in August 1921 and stored at Queensferry until sold to the LNER in February 1927, becoming their Class O4 No 6606. Renumbered 3816 in 1946, it became BR 63816. Allocated to Hull Dairycoates by January 1948, it moved in September 1951 to Colwick from where it was withdrawn on 15 January 1966 and despatched for scrap to George Cohen at Kettering on 23 March 1966. Lot 9 Signal Lever Plates: Withyham, Groombridge, SR (2).
A pair of Southern Railway signal box lever plates, 30 FROM WITHYHAM DOWN DISTANT, also, 7 GROOMBRIDGE TO WITHYHAM UP HOME, each cast iron, 3½"x8¾", original paintwork, though the latter has part missing at the base and both have the rear bracket chipped. A smokebox monogram roundel, MR in ornate interwoven initials, from a Mashonaland Railway engine (a financial constituent of Rhodesia Railways which had certain locos allotted to it for accounting reasons up until the 1920s). Probably off 8th class Nos 73-76 or 9th class 80-91 or 111-116 which all carried Mashonaland Railway Co Ltd cabside noumberplates. Lot 18 Worksplates (Steam): LMS Built 1906, Horwich.
A worksplate, LMS BUILT 1906, HORWICH. Locomotives built by the Lancashire & Yorkshire Railway at its Horwich Works in 1906 were mainly 41 Class 0-6-0, many of which survived into BR service numbered in the 52XXX series and this plate is most likely to be from one of those. Also built that year were 1451 Class 0-8-0, all withdrawn by the 1930s, two 898 Class 0-6-0 and railmotors Nos 3-8. A GWR cabside numberplate, 5336, from a 43XX Class 2-6-0 built at Swindon in December 1917. Allocated to Gloucester by January 1948 and later Oxley, Laira, St Philips Marsh, Severn Tunnel Junction and Taunton from where it was withdrawn in the week ending 5 September 1964 and sold for scrap to George Cohen at Morriston. Lot 25 Nameplates: 66 Squadron.
A nameplate, 66 SQUADRON, with BATTLE OF BRITAIN CLASS appendage below, from the (Southern Railway) Bulleid light pacific 4-6-2 No 34110, the last of the class built at Brighton in January 1951 and the only one not to receive an enamel badge. Allocated new to Bournemouth on 26 January 1951, it moved by January 1959 to Exmouth Junction from where it was withdrawn in the week ending 9 November 1963 and cut up at Eastleigh Works. Lot 26 Nameplates: R.A.F. Badge, BB Class.
A Southern Railway Battle of Britain Class enamel badge depicting the Royal Air Force eagle crest. These badges were displayed with the nameplates of engines named after RAF stations, aircraft types, commands and WWII leaders who did not possess a family coat-of-arms. Enamel in brass surround, overall 27¾"x21½", the back curved to fit the streamlined casing, excellent colour with the usual loss of shine on such crests carried for years on the loco, the original fixing bolts in the back. £8000-12000 - Sold for £11,900 to bidder number 2318

A smokebox numberplate, 30128, from a London & South Western Railway M7 Class 0-4-4T No 128 built at Eastleigh in November 1911. It retained this number in SR days, becoming BR 30128. Allocated to Eastleigh by January 1948 and then briefly to Yeovil Town with a final nine years at Bournemouth from where it was withdrawn in the week ending 7 January 1961 and cut up at Eastleigh Works. Lot 31 Signal Box Nameboards: North Woolwich, LNER.
An LNER signal box nameboard, NORTH WOOLWICH, the terminus of the branch from Stratford. Enamel, 62½"x18½", within a wooden frame, face chipping, corrosion in places, a hole above the letters 'I C', loss to the left side, however the lettering unaffected. £200-350 - Sold for £250 to bidder number 7222

Lot 32 Shedplates: 41E.
A shedplate 41E Staveley Barrow Hill (February 1958 to October 1965 for steam, entirely 1991 and now run by the Barrow Hill Engine Shed Society). This ex Midland shed, formerly 18D, had an allocation of 65 locos in 1959. By 1965 it was still home to 9 diminutive tank engines that worked in Staveley Works. A shedplate 65F Grangemouth (1949 to October 1965 for steam). This ex CR shed was home to around 30 locos for most of its life. Its most notable resident was WD 2-10-0 90773 North British. Lot 40 Worksplates (Diesel): Bagnall, 3117, 1956.
A worksplate, W. G. BAGNALL, 3117, 1956, from a standard gauge 0-6-0 diesel-mechanical locomotive. Originally ordered for use with the NCB at Hem Heath Colliery at Trentham, Stoke-on-Trent, but diverted to the West Cannock Collieries at Hednesford, as No. 1. In January 1959 it was transferred to Hollybank Colliery at Essington. In April 1960 it made its final move to Lea Hall Colliery, Rugeley and was sold for scrap in December 1983 to Marple & Gillott Ltd, Sheffield. A BR(M) totem sign, CASTLE BROMWICH, (h/f), a station north of Birmingham New Street on the route to Derby, junction for the Midland route to Sutton Coldfield and Walsall. The top flange has been folded flat and the lower flange removed in order to fit flat to the station building, with small fixing holes in the white rim. A worksplate, ARMSTRONG WHITWORTH, 428, 1921, from a Midland Railway 3835 Class 0-6-0, LMS Class 4F, No 3949 which became BR 43949. A long time Saltley engine, it was withdrawn from there in December 1964 and sold for scrap to Cashmores at Great Bridge. A South African Railways cabside numberplate, 2736, from a 3ft 6ins gauge Class 19D 4-8-2 built by Robert Stephenson & Hawthorns, Works No 7249, in 1946. A shedplate 8E Liverpool Brunswick (May 1950 to April 1958) then Northwich (April 1958 to March 1968). The ex CLC shed at Brunswick had around 35 locos on its books in the 1950s. It remained open for servicing locos until September 1961. The ex CLC shed at Northwich, formerly 13D and 9G, had 30 locos when using this code. Lot 63 Worksplates (Steam): LMS Built Crewe, 1940.
A worksplate, LMS BUILT 1940, CREWE. The only locos recorded as being built by the LMS at Crewe in 1940 were streamlined Princess Coronation Class 8P 4-6-2s Nos 6240-4 which became BR 46240-4 and were named City of Coventry, City of Edinburgh, City of Glasgow, City of Lancaster and City of Leeds, the latter renamed King George VI in 1941. It has, however, emerged that several LMS Class 8F 2-8-0s recorded as built in 1941, actually carried 1940 plates. A smokebox numberplate, 6915, from a GWR 4900 Hall Class 4-6-0 built at Swindon in February 1941 and named when built MURSLEY HALL after a country house in the village of Mursley, Buckinghamshire, demolished in the 1960s. Allocated to Oxley by January 1948, its later sheds included Swindon, Bristol Bath Road, Didcot, Shrewsbury and Banbury from where it was withdrawn in the week ending 13 February 1965 and sold for scrap to Cohens at Morriston. A shedplate 15D Bedford (1935 to April 1958), then Coalville (February 1958 to September 1963), finally Leicester GC (September 1963 to July 1964). The ex MR shed at Bedford had 40 locos. Ex MR Coalville, formerly 17C, had 25, and finally Leicester GC, formerly 38C and 15E, had just 11 locos when taking on this code. A Chinese locomotive plate, depicting the military standard of the People's Liberation Army. The first line reads 1 August, the date in 1927 when the PLA was formed. These flags were fitted to locos to celebrate so called Model Loco Crews. A worksplate, LMS BUILT DERBY 1943, from a LMS Class 5MT 4-6-0 No 5488 allocated new to Polmadie on 17 November 1943, becoming BR 45488. Always a Scottish based engine, its later sheds were Motherwell, Perth, Grangemouth and Corkerhill from where it was withdrawn on 29 November 1966 and sold for scrap to Motherwell Machinery & Scrap at Wishaw.
