Lot 3 Shedplates: 84K.
A shedplate 84K Chester (GWR) (1948 to February 1958), then Wrexham Rhosddu (February 1958 to January 1960). The ex GWR shed at Chester had around 55 locos while using this Western Region code. It was transferred to the London Midland, becoming 6E, and closing in April 1960. The ex GCR shed at Wrexham Rhosddu, formerly 6E, exchanged places with Chester, and also had around 55 locos. Lot 4 Worksplates (Steam): Winterthur, 3215, 1927.
A worksplate, WINTERTHUR, SCHWEIZERISCHE LOCOMOTIV & MASCHINENFABRIK 3215 of 1927 from a 3ft 6ins gauge 2-6-6-0 Mallet of an order of 10 supplied to Stats Spoorwegen, the Dutch colonial system in Java, as No 1613. After independence it became CC50 class No CC5015. These magnificent engines were the world's last commercially working main line Mallets, to be found on lines east of Bandung until the early 1980s. Three of the class, but not this engine, are preserved. Cast brass, 16½"x5¾", the front repainted. £300-500 - Sold for £480 to bidder number 3181

A worksplate, BUILT 1954 BRIGHTON, from a BR Standard Class 4 2-6-4T 80084 allocated new to Bletchley in May 1954 and later Willesden, Bricklayers Arms, Stewarts Lane, Brighton and Redhill from where it was withdrawn on 13 June 1965 and sold for scrap to Birds Commercial Motors at Morriston. Lot 13 Cabside Numberplates: Cabside 155 (RR).
A Rhodesian Railways cabside numberplate, 155, from a 3ft 6ins gauge 10th Class 4-8-2 built by the North British Locomotive Co, Works No 22798, in 1922. It was sold to the Zambesi Sawmills Railway in 1959 and ended its days hauling logs between Mulobezi and Livingstone before being sold for scrap. Cast brass, 19"x13", ex loco condition with the original bolts. £150-300 - Sold for £190 to bidder number 4403

Lot 16 Shedplates: 9E.
A shedplate 9E Trafford Park (May 1950 to December 1956, then February 1958 to March 1968). This ex Cheshire Lines Railway shed was home to over 70 locos in the 1950s including 6 Jubilees and 8 ex GCR Directors. By 1960 it had also taken on 2 Patriots, 7 Royal Scots and 9 Britannias. Lot 17 Headboards: The Waverley.
A locomotive headboard, THE WAVERLEY, as carried on the St Pancras to Edinburgh Waverley service via both the Settle-Carlisle and Waverley routes. The title was introduced on 17 June 1957 and bestowed on the 9.15 a.m. ex St Pancras and the 10.05 a.m. ex Waverley; its last titled run was on 28 September 1968. Lot 20 Smokeboxes: 30926 (Repton).
A smokebox numberplate 30926 from the SR Schools Class 4-4-0 No 926 built at Eastleigh in May 1934 and named REPTON after the public school in Derbyshire, becoming BR 30926. Allocated to Dover by January 1948 and later Ramsgate, Bricklayers Arms, Stewarts Lane and Basingstoke from where it was withdrawn on 30 December 1962. Purchased for preservation in 1966, it was overhauled at Eastleigh Works and moved to the USA, returning to the UK in 1990. It is currently on the North Yorkshire Moors Railway in SR olive green livery and with its original number 926. The smokebox numberplate was surplus to requirements when the loco was repainted in SR livery and was acquired by the vendor's late father at that time. A worksplate, BEYER PEACOCK, 7697, 1954, from a Rhodesia Railways 3ft 6ins 20A Class 4-8-2+2-8-4 Beyer Garratt No 712 delivered to Beira in 1957. It became part of Zambia Railways in 1967, retaining its original RR number. It was later noted derelict at Livingstone and was subsequently scrapped. Lot 29 Totem Signs: Highbridge for Burnham-on- Sea.
A BR(W) totem sign, HIGHBRIDGE FOR BURNHAM-ON-SEA, (f/f), from the Bristol to Taunton main line and junction for the Somerset and Dorset route to Evercreech and Bournemouth. The suffix was added after the closure of the line to Burnham-on-Sea in 1952. A chip repair at the top centre of the upper panel, below the centre bolt hole expertly restored, a minor blemish under the second 'I', excellent colour and shine. £1200-1500 - Sold for £2,200 to bidder number 8498

Lot 30 Cabside Numberplates: 6909 (Frewin Hall).
A GWR cabside numberplate, 6909, from a 4900 Hall Class 4-6-0 built at Swindon in November 1940 and named when built FREWIN HALL after a hall attached to Brasenose College, Oxford. Allocated to St Philips Marsh by January 1948, its later sheds included Goodwick, Llanelly, Neyland, Cardiff Canton, Cardiff East Dock and Didcot from where it was withdrawn on 25 June 1964 and sold for scrap to Cashmores at Newport. Lot 33 Nameplates: Salisbury.
A nameplate SALISBURY from Hudswell Clarke 1069 of 1914, a standard gauge 0-6-0 side tank new to Sir John Jackson for the construction of Bulford and Larkhill camps, Wiltshire for the War Department. On completion of the contract in 1916 it was sold to the War Department for use on the Larkhill Military Railway. In 1918 it moved to the Woolmer Military Railway, Hampshire. Sold in 1928 to Fountain & Burnley Ltd, North Gawber Colliery, Yorkshire West Riding. Became NCB property in 1947 and transferred to Woolley Colliery, Darton in September 1962. Scrapped on site April/May 1966. Cast brass, length 37½", the front repainted, the lettering and rim unpolished. £500-800 - Sold for £980 to bidder number 1345

Its sheds included Doncaster, Darnall and New England from where it was withdrawn in December 1964 and sold for scrap to Hughes Bolckow at Blyth. A BR(E) station sign, NEW HOLLAND PIER, (fully flanged), from the terminus of the short branch serving the Humber Ferry, closed in 1981 at the time of the opening of the Humber Bridge. A South African Railways cabside numberplate 984 from a Cape Government Railway 3ft 6ins gauge 7th Class 4-8-0 No 714 built by Neilson & Co, Works No 4474, in 1893, becoming SAR Class 7 No 984 in 1912. Many of the Class were used on branch line work until the late 1960s and all were finally withdrawn by 1972. Cast brass, 20¾"x14¼", ex loco condition. £250-400 - Sold for £460 to bidder number 4403

A smokebox numberplate 46402 from a LMS Class 2 2-6-0 No 6402 built at Crewe and allocated new to Kentish Town on 10 December 1946, becoming BR 46402. Its later sheds included Kettering, Leicester MR, Derby and Buxton from where it was withdrawn in the week ending 1 July 1967 and sold for scrap to J. Buttigieg at Newport. Lot 48 Shedplates: 6D.
A shedplate 6D Chester Northgate (1949 to January 1960) then Shrewsbury ( September 1963 to March 1967). The ex CLC shed at Chester had an allocation of just 10 locos. When the ex GWR/LNWR joint shed at Shrewsbury was transferred from the WR (formerly 84G and 89A), the LM region adorned its allocation of around 50 locos with this code. Lot 50 Clocks and Watches: MR 12" Dropcase, Mann, Gloucester.
A Midland Railway 12" dial dropcase wall clock by Mann of Gloucester. The clock was originally used at Burton on Trent, but was later moved to Gloucester Eastgate. It has an oak case, chain driven fusee movement and brass numberplate LMS, 11015, the original face marked W.C MANN LTD, GLOUCESTER. The clock has been serviced and is in full working order and is complete with pendulum and key. £800-1200 - Sold for £1,250 to bidder number 2927

A Southern Railway target sign, BROADSTONE. The station was at the southern end of the Somerset and Dorset route and closed in 1966. Chipping at edges and at fixings restored, lettering unaffected other than the very tip of the first 'A'. £400-600 - Sold for £750 to bidder number 4995

Lot 52 Nameplates: Conqueror.
A nameplate, CONQUEROR, from the LMS Class 6P Jubilee 4-6-0 No 5701 built at Crewe, entering traffic on 24 April 1936 and named after the Royal Navy battleship (1911-22), becoming BR 45701. It spent all its working life at Newton Heath from where it was withdrawn on 23 February 1963 and cut up at Crewe Works the following month. Cast brass, length 28¾", the front in well polished condition, the back in ex loco condition with one punch mark indicating that the plate was carried on the left-hand side of the locomotive. £5800-7000 - Sold for £6,300 to bidder number 7428

A shedplate 9D Buxton (1935 to September 1963), then Newton Heath (September 1963 to February 1968). The ex LNW shed at Buxton had 55 locos in the 1950s, before becoming 9L. A Great Eastern Railway three aspect sliding knob handlamp, the top stamped G.E.R. PETERBOROUGH, 105, the body stamped E.9.19. The lamp is restored and complete with its LNE-E vessel and LNE burner, glasses and rear handle. £150-300 - This item was unsold.

A smokebox numberplate 75057 from a BR Standard Class 4MT 4-6-0 built at Swindon and allocated new to Leicester MR on 15 March 1957. Its later sheds were Derby, Springs Branch and Skipton from where it was withdrawn in the week ending 12 February 1966 and sold for scrap to T.W. Ward at Beighton. A GWR cabside numberplate 4277 from a 4200 Class 2-8-0T built at Swindon in April 1929. Allocated to Duffryn Yard by January 1948 and later Severn Tunnel Junction, Ebbw Junction and Aberbeeg from where it was withdrawn on 8 June 1964 and sold for scrap to Woodham Bros at Barry. It was purchased privately for preservation in 1986 and acquired in 2008 by the Dartmouth Steam Railway where it is currently awaiting overhaul. Lot 64 Totem Signs: Cefn On.
A BR(W) totem sign, CEFN ON, (f/f), from the Cardiff to Caerphilly and Rhymney route. The halt was situated at the southern end of Caerphilly Tunnel and closed in 1986 after the opening of a new station, Lisvane and Thornhill, in 1985. A rare totem auctioned only once before at a local sale in Cardiff. A few small face chips and minor blemishes expertly restored, almost invisible, slight mottling in places, excellent colour. £900-1200 - Sold for £2,000 to bidder number 512

Lot 68 Shedplates: 75C.
A shedplate 75C Norwood Junction (1950 to January 1964 for steam, full closure in 1966). In early BR days this ex SR shed had 40 locos, which was reduced to 18 in its final year. A small fleet of diesel shunters also carried this code; 3 03s, 15 08s and 3 of their SR forerunners. Repainted. £200-350 - This item was unsold.

Lot 69 Worksplates (Steam): Mavag 6856, 1952, Worksplate.
A worksplate, MAVAG, 6856, 1952, from a 5ft gauge 0-10-0 of Russian class Er, built in quantity after the Second World War. This famous Hungarian locomotive works was only one of a number of Soviet Bloc contributors building this mixed traffic class, believed to be the world's most numerous class of steam engine. The plate is in the Cyrillic script, though some are in the Latin alphabet. Cast aluminium, 14"x7¼", cleaned and the front repainted. £50-80 - Sold for £160 to bidder number 8865

Lot 70 Cabside Numberplates: S.N.C.F. 030.TB.203, Veynes.
A French cabside numberplate, S.N.C.F. 030.TB.203, including its shed allocation plate VEYNES, from a locomotive built as a Bourbonnais 0-6-0 tender engine No 209 at P.L.M. Paris, Works No 100, in 1871 and later renumbered 3 AM 203. Rebuilt as a 0-6-0 tank in 1913, it became S.N.C.F. 030.TB.203 in 1925. It was based at the depot at Veynes in Region Mediterrannee from where it was withdrawn. The class lasted until 1958. Cast metal, 19¼"x11¾", some cracking at the top of the plate. £250-400 - Sold for £460 to bidder number 2905

A smokebox numberplate 45218 from a LMS Class 5 4-6-0 No 5218 built by Armstrong Whitworth, Works No 1259, and allocated new to Bank Hall on 26 November 1935, becoming BR 45218. A much travelled engine, its later sheds included Huddersfield, Wakefield, Southport, Carlisle Canal and Carlisle Kingmoor from where it was withdrawn in the week ending 16 April 1966 and sold for scrap to J.
