Lot 8 Worksplates (Steam): Beyer Peacock 7351 1950 (RR 399).
A worksplate, BEYER PEACOCK, 7351, 1950, from a 3ft 6ins gauge Rhodesia Railways Class 15A 4-6-4+4-6-4 Garratt No 399, the first of a batch sent to Beira. It was still in service at Bulawayo in 1978 and last used in 1981. Cast brass 10½"x6½", the front repainted, the back in original condition other than the loco number 399 on the raised block being cleaned. £150-300 - Sold for £380 to bidder number 7322

Lot 11 Smokeboxes: 48266.
A smokebox numberplate, 48266, from a Stanier type 8F 2-8-0 built to Ministry of Supply order by the North British Locomotive Co, Works No 24746, in March 1942 for the War Department, WD No 551. Loaned new to the LMS, it was returned to the WD in June 1943 and taken into LMS stock the following December, becoming LMS 8266 and BR 48266. Allocated first to Normanton and later Wellingborough, Holbeck, Nottingham, Leicester, Burton, Agecroft and Lostock Hall from where it was withdrawn in the week ending 17 June 1967 and sold for scrap to J. McWilliam at Shettleston on 24 August 1967. Ex loco condition. £300-500 - Sold for £520 to bidder number 1538

A worksplate, (LMS) BUILT 1938 Crewe. Locos built at Crewe in 1938 were LMS Class 3 2-6-2T Nos 196-209 which became BR 40196-209, Class 5 4-6-0 Nos 5452-71 which became BR 45452-71, Class 8F 2-8-0 Nos 8096/7 which became BR 48096/7 and Class 8P Coronation 4-6-2 Nos 6225-34 which became 46225-34 and comprised all ten Duchesses. Cast brass, 10½"x6", the LMS initials removed (8108 stamped, probably referring to (4)8108, an engine recorded as built in 1939). The front repainted. £100-200 - Sold for £100 to bidder number 576

A worksplate renumbering strip, 69873, from a LNER A8 Class 4-6-2T rebuilt at Darlington in April 1935 from a North Eastern Railway Class D/LNER H1 Class 4-4-4T No 1520 built at Darlington in June 1920, renumbered 9873 in 1946, becoming BR 69873. In BR days it was allocated to West Hartlepool and Sunderland from where it was withdrawn in February 1960 and cut up at Darlington Works. Lot 22 Bus and Tram: Bristol Tramways, Car License, 2.
A tram registration plate, BRISTOL TRAMWAYS, CAR LICENSE, 2, from an electric tram built in 1902 and withdrawn in May 1938, 6½"x4¼". The plate was mounted on the bulkhead behind the driver and is in original condition, with some of the original red wax infill remaining. It is displayed on a shaped wooden mount in the original style. An unusual item which we have not seen before. £100-200 - Sold for £440 to bidder number 1779

Lot 28 Loco and Rolling Stock: Pair of Bulleid Tavern Car Chairs.
A pair of chairs from a Bulleid Tavern Car with original brown moquette, each with a hand grip recess to the rear, a small rack to the base for briefcase or handbag and the woodwork branded SR. Bulleid designed the Tavern Cars as faux English pubs, complete with a traditional pub sign and exterior painted brickwork. (see Bulleids SR Steam Passenger Stock, David Gould, Oakwood Press 1980). The chairs are rare examples and are in good, usable condition with minor wear at the top corners. Overall height 34¼". (2) £250-400 - Sold for £360 to bidder number 9220

A worksplate, ANDREW BARCLAY, 1829, 1924, from a standard gauge 0-6-0ST which went new to James Nimmo & Co. Ltd, Auchengeich Colliery, Bridgend, near Chryston, Lanarkshire. To NCB with colliery in January 1947 where it acquired the running number 2 and later 12. Worked at numerous different collieries in Scotland under NCB ownership, finishing up at Polkemmet Colliery, Whitburn, West Lothian. Scrapped there in 1987. Lot 41 Shedplates: 12B.
A shedplate 12B Carlisle Upperby (1935 to June 1950), then Carlisle Canal (June 1950 to July 1951), then Penrith (October 1955 to February 1958), and finally Carlisle Upperby (February 1958 and closure to steam January 1968). This code is probably best known for its use as Carlisle Upperby, the ex LNWR shed having around 90 locos at the height of its importance. The ex NBR shed at Canal had the distinction of having four A3s and five D49s carrying this LMR code among its 60 occupants. Out of use between 1951 and 1955, only six locos at Penrith carried 12B until Upperby regained it in 1958. The front repainted, a chip to the left rim. £100-200 - Sold for £500 to bidder number 4197

Lot 42 Office and General Equipment: VNR, Vale of Neath Rly Window.
A Vale of Neath Railway cut glass window etched with the company's VNR initials, removed from Neath Riverside station when demolished. The glass plate is contained within the original frame (the top bar absent) and has a crack to the lower left corner. A rare survivor, the company having been absorbed by the GWR in 1865. Overall 11½"x38", with decoration to the corners. £80-120 - Sold for £540 to bidder number 3754

Lot 43 Smokeboxes: 90478.
A smokebox numberplate, 90478, from a War Department Austerity 2-8-0 built by Vulcan Foundry, Works No 5080, in June 1944 to Ministry of Supply order, WD No 78679. Loaned to the LNER in December 1945 and purchased by them in December 1946, their O7 Class No 3157, becoming BR 90478. Its BR sheds included Hull Springhead, Goole, Hull Dairycoates and West Hartlepool from where it was withdrawn on 9 September 1967 and sold for scrap to Hughes Bolckow at Blyth. Lot 44 Cabside Numberplates: SAR, 2128, 12A.
A South African Railways cabside numberplate, 2128, from a 3ft 6ins gauge Class 12A 4-8-2 built by the North British Locomotive Co, Works No 23893, in 1929. The Class was the first design to originate from the SAR after its formation and was designed for goods traffic, mainly coal trains. All were withdrawn during the 1980s. It finally closed to steam in December 1964. Some diesel locos that were allocated to the new diesel depot, also coded 14A, may also have carried these plates. A nameplate, BYRON, from the BR Standard Britannia Class 7 4-6-2 No 70031 built at Crewe and allocated new to Holyhead on 29 November 1952. It moved to Longsight two months later where it remained for eight years. Its later sheds included Aston, Willesden, Carlisle Upperby and Kingmoor from where it was withdrawn in the week ending 11 November 1967 and despatched for scrap to J. A GWR cabside numberplate 9633, from a 8750 Class 0-6-0PT built at Swindon in January 1946. A long time Newton Abbot engine, it moved towards the end to Exeter and Duffryn Yard from where it was withdrawn in the week ending 5 October 1963 and cut up at Swindon Works in the week ending 7 December 1963. Lot 71 Shedplates: 9B (LMS Pattern).
A shedplate 9B Stockport Edgeley (1935 to May 1968). The ex LNWR shed at Stockport housed only 25 locos in the 1950s, but this increased to 35 during the twilight of steam in the 1960s. Most famous resident was undoubtedly the double chimney Jubilee 45596 Bahamas. This LMS style plate has two additional holes which enabled it to be fitted to a smokebox that had been drilled to carry a Midland Railway shedplate.
