Great Central Railwayana Auction Sale 221, Auction Lot 186
Lot 186 A late 19th century Hull, Barnsley and West Riding Jct. Rly. 12" dial mahogany roundhead clock used at Kirk Smeaton and retaining its original pre-1905 dial writing, a remarkable survivor. Overall height: 15¼". The box with bottom door lacking lock and with some veneer loss to the base. The dial surround still with bezel lock (inoperative) and holding a cast brass bezel with integral sight ring containing a thick bevelled glass. Dial written ,H&B&WRJnRy B. Cooke & Son Hull, with some flaking; the rear with several notes dated 1885 and later including one indicating it was moved from Sculcoates in Nov. '85. Chain fusee movement between rectangular plates. The HB&WRJR opened in July 1885, became the Hull & Barnsley Rly in 1905. Ex-LNER records show that H&BR No 29 became LNER 4782 and was used in the Office at Kirk Smeaton when opened with the line, it closed to passengers 1932, although as noted above it probably initially spent a short period at Sculcoates Goods. Almost certainly one of the original clocks on the line. Complete with pendulum, winder and copy of its entry in LNER records. £1000-1500
