Auction Catalogue: Great Central Railwayana, 7 March 2020
Lot 184 |
A worksplate, ENGLISH ELECTRIC 3072/D622 1960, from Class 40 D326, later 40126. New to Crewe North in December 1960; withdrawn from Kingmoor in February 1984 and cut up at Doncaster Works the following month. This loco inadvertently became the most famous in its class when it hauled the mail train which was the subject of the Great Train Robbery at Sears Crossing near Cheddington on 8 August 1963. The plate was sold by ourselves in 2000 and has subsequently been re-chromed and the front repainted; nevertheless a significant piece of railway and social history. Chromed brass, 10¼"x4½." £1000-1500 |
