A GWR cabside numberplate, 4080, from the 4073 Castle Class 4-6-0, POWDERHAM CASTLE, built at Swindon in March 1924 and named after the country seat of the Earl of Devon eight miles from Exeter on the banks of the River Exe and resulting in the removal of the same name from the earlier 4-4-0 No 3301. Allocated to Bristol Bath Road by January 1948, it spent most of its days in the West Country, moving towards the end to Cardiff Canton and Cardiff East Dock and very briefly Old Oak Common and Southall from where it was withdrawn in the week ending 8 August 1964 and taken for scrap by Cashmores at Newport on 23 October 1964. Cast brass, the front repainted. £3000-4000 |
