An early 20th century brass drum clock supplied by Williamsons for use in the Pullman car Rita. Overall height: 10½ inches. Case of typical nautical style attached to the wall by three screws through the peripheral flange. Rear scratched USD. Silvered brass 8" dial engraved with Arabic numbers, 1-12 filled with black wax, 13 to 24 with red wax and with a slit under 24 for a regulation lever annotated S and F. Also engraved Rita Pullman 1216 centrally and made in England by H. Williamson Ltd. London around the top edge. The 8"dial covered by a bevelled glass held in a substantial cast brass bezel. The bezel a push fit onto the case assisted by a brass knob. Spring driven 8 day lever movement marked Astral Coventry. Williamsons started in 1871 and amalgamated with Grimshaw & Baxter in the early 1920s after which the Astral trade mark was adopted and used by various subsequent owners until the 1950s. Rita was built in 1932 for the Brighton Belle; this clock was probably original equipment. Complete with winder. £500-800 |
