A GWR coat of arms from a 3031 or Achilles Class 4-2-2 Single No 3059 built at Swindon, Works No 1419, in April 1895 to William Dean's design and named VOLTIGEUR, most likely after a mid 19th century racehorse, but renamed JOHN W. WILSON in March 1908 after a GWR Director (1908-1932). Brass coats of arms were fitted to both splashers below the nameplates. It was withdrawn in June 1913 and scrapped at Swindon Works. Cast brass, 11½" diameter, in ex loco condition. The plate is hollow to the rear within the area of the shield. The back is clearly stamped with the engine number, 3059. £500-800 |
