A Southern Railway ships bell from the Isle of Wight paddle steamer RYDE, built by William Denny in 1937. Requisitioned during the second world war she worked as a minesweeper in the Straits of Dover then sailed to Normandy on D-Day, later returning to Isle of Wight service. She was retired by British Rail in 1969. Cast brass, 7½" base diameter, with mounting bracket, the bell engraved PS, RYDE, SR. £300-500 |
