A nameplate, CHARLES J HAMBRO, from a GWR 2900 Saint Class 4-6-0 No 178 built at Swindon, Works No 2112, in April 1905 and originally named KIRKLAND after the racehorse owned by the GWR Director Frank Bibby which won the 1907 Grand National. It was renumbered 2978 in December 1912 and renamed in May 1935 after the GWR Director who became Chairman in 1940. Allocated new to Bristol Bath Road, it was withdrawn from Swindon in August 1946 and cut up at Swindon Works. The plate has been repainted, the re-used backplate clearly showing the position of the letters of the original name. Repainted £4500-5000 |
