A winged springbok emblem carried by the LNER A4 Class 4-6-2 No 4488/9/60009, UNION OF SOUTH AFRICA, the body engraved, PRESENTED BY MR C J I FOURIE OF THE FRIEND NEWSPAPERS LTD, BLOEMFONTEIN SOUTH AFRICA DECEMBER 1953. Only one emblem was fitted, to the left hand side of the streamlined casing, and, although presented in December 1953, it was not fitted until 20 April 1954 when the engine was at Doncaster Works in the course of normal repair. The loco spent most of its career at Haymarket before moving in May 1962 to Aberdeen Ferryhill from where it was withdrawn on 1 June 1966 and sold for preservation to Mr John Cameron. Copper, 13"x12", mounted on a wooden board, overall 17"x15½". A little damage at the base of the wing, evidence of original green paint on the top rim. £3000-5000 |
