A nameplate, WOOTTON HALL, from the GWR 4900 Hall Class 4-6-0 No 4979 built at Swindon in February 1930, the location of the actual Hall not stated in GWR records but there are Halls so named at Wootton Wawen in Warwickshire and Wootton Bassett in Wiltshire. Allocated to Cardiff Canton by January 1948 and later Southall, Didcot, Reading and Oxford from where it was withdrawn on 28 December 1963 and sold for scrap to Woodham Bros at Barry on 30 April 1964. Saved for preservation, it is now owned by the Furness Railway Trust and undergoing restoration at the Ribble Steam Railway. £4000-5000 |
