A London & North Western Railway cabside numberplate, 2426, CREWE, OCT 1917, from a LNWR Claughton Class 4-6-0 built at Crewe, Works No 5396, to Bowen Cooke's design in October 1917, one of the Class which never had a name bestowed upon it. It became LMS No 5959 and was withdrawn in June 1932. Cast iron, 32¾"x11½", repainted. This plate is featured in the book, LNWR Liveries by Talbot, Dow, Millard and Davis, pages 74 and 79. A copy of the book accompanies the lot, together with a copy of a letter written by the late H.B. (Basil) Spencer, the doyen of railwayana dealers, in 1969 containing details of his discovery and purchase of this plate. £1500-2500 |
