A nameplate, DICK TURPIN, from the LNER A1 Class 4-6-2 No 2579 built by the North British Locomotive Co, Works No 23117, in November 1924 and named after the notorious highwayman, one of only five of the Class not named after racehorses. It was rebuilt and re-classified to A3 Class in November 1942, renumbered 80 in 1946, becoming BR 60080. Allocated new to Heaton where it remained until 1960 apart from a year or so at Gateshead in 1944/5, it moved in May 1960 to Holbeck and later Ardsley, Neville Hill and Gateshead from where it was withdrawn on 12 October 1964 and cut up by Drapers at Hull in the week ending 19 December 1964. Cast brass, length 56½", the front repainted. £8000-10000 |
