A nameplate, EIRE, from the LMS Jubilee Class 6P 4-6-0 No 5572, BR 45572, built by the North British Locomotive Co, Works No 24130, and allocated new to Crewe North on 25 August 1934. Originally named IRISH FREE STATE on 24 March 1936, this was changed to EIRE on 19 July 1938, without publicity, by agreement between the governments of the UK and Ireland. Its later sheds included lengthy periods at both Trafford Park and Bristol Barrow Road from where it departed in 1961 to Shrewsbury from where it was withdrawn in the week ending 4 January 1964 and cut up by A. Loom at Spondon, Derby on 16 July 1964. Cast brass, 28¾" long, the front repainted. £7000-9000 |
