A worksplate, ROBERT STEPHENSON, 3634, DARLINGTON, 1915, from a 3'6" gauge 4-8-2 new to South African Railways as Class 14 No 1735. One of the 3rd batch of this powerful freight class which were later rebuilt with larger boilers to class 14R. 1735 was sold in the late 1970s to Rustenburg Platinum Mines at Bleskop for industrial use, but was out of use by 1983. It survived stored at Krugersdorp until scheduled for scrapping in 2010 due to vandalism and theft of parts. Cast brass, 11¼"x5¼", the front lightly cleaned. £350-500 |
