Great Central Railwayana Auctions Sale 245, Auction Lot 136 Lot 136
An attractive mid-19th century LNWR 12" oak drop case clock. Overall height: 21" The box with side and bottom doors, oval glazed pendulum window with moulded surround and fan shaped ears with lobed drops. Standard oval brass LMSR plate numbered 8925 fixed partly over two plugged holes. One-piece dial surround with repairs, containing an old style spun brass bezel with separate sight ring now soldered in place. Dial overwritten L.& N.W.R. J. Sewill 61 South Castle St. 1868 Liverpool, with the original writing discernible under. Blued spade hands. Wire fusee movement between plates with feet and shaped shoulders, knopped pillars and shaped backcock. Surviving LMS records dont include 1868 or 8925; LNWR clocks were numbered up to about 5500 and this series was adopted as the start of the LMS numbering thus 8925 would not normally be ex-LNWR, however the plugged screw holes suggest the LMS plate may replace an earlier LNWR rectangular vitreous enamel plate (perhaps damaged or unreadable) which would fit the plugged holes while the replacement oval had to be fixed slightly lower to clear the pendulum window moulding. Complete with pendulum, bob scratched 1868 recently and 639 and 8925 earlier and altered rod (both possibly replaced), winder and a receipt recording its sale by Gardiner Houlgate in their disposal of the late I. Lymans clocks in 2014. £1000-1500
