A worksplate (LONDON NORTH EASTERN RAILWAY) 1861, DONCASTER, 1934, from the LNER A$ Class 4-6-2 No 4496 built at Doncaster in September 1937 and originally named GOLDEN SHUTTLE. It was officially renamed DWIGHT D. EISENHOWER in a ceremony at Marylebone station on 27 September 1945 after the American Commander of the Allied Forces in Europe, later, of course, President of the USA. Allocated new to Doncaster, it soon moved to Kings Cross and spent almost all its working life either there or at Grantham, moving briefly at the very end to New England from where it was withdrawn on 20 July 1963 and presented to the American National Railroad Museum in Wisconsin where it resides today. Engraved brass, 13¼"x7¾", the front lightly polished, the back stamped 4496, the Company title filled. £5000-7000 |
