A smokebox numberplate, 63578, from a Great Central Railway Class 8K 2-8-0 No 1231 built by the North British Locomotive Co, Works No 19887, in November 1912, which became LNER O4 Class No 6231. In October 1945 it was rebuilt as an O1 and was renumbered 3578 in 1946, becoming BR 63578. Allocated to Gorton by January 1948, it moved in July 1950 to Annesley where it spent the remainder of its working life until withdrawal on 17 November 1962, for much of this time working the famous fast freights to Woodford Halse, nicknamed windcutters, until displaced by BR Standard 2-10-0s in 1957. It was subsequently scrapped although no reliable disposal details are recorded. Ex loco condition. £300-500 |
