| Lot 322 | A nameplate EDMUND BURKE from Metropolitan Railway electric locomotive number 7. Built in 1923 by Metropolitan-Vickers in Barrow in Furness, the loco was named in 1927 after the eighteenth century MP and philosopher who lived in Beaconsfield. The ornate brass plates were removed during the Second World War and replaced in 1953 by aluminium ones. The locomotives were used to trains between The City, Baker Street and Rickmansworth, where steam took over for the journey to Aylesbury. They are by far the oldest named main line electric locos. Withdrawal came in 1962 when it was stored at Mitre Bridge along with nos. 2, 16, and 18. Heavily vandalised they were eventually towed to Rugby where they were cut up in July 1966. A backboard is available to enable the plate to be wall mounted. Cast aluminium, 49½", ex loco condition. £2000-3000 |
