A nameplate, CROMWELL'S CASTLE, from the (GWR) 4073 Castle Class 4-6-0 No 7031 built at Swindon in June 1950 and named after the Castle on the Isle of Tresco built in 1651 to replace King Charles' Castle. Allocated new on 20 June 1950 to Laira where it spent most of its working life, moving in September 1959 to Swindon and in February 1962 to Worcester from where it was withdrawn in the week ending 13 July 1963 and taken for scrap by Cashmores at Great Bridge on 11 May 1964. One of only a handful of GWR nameplates with an apostrophe, the plate is in ex loco condition. £12000-15000 |
