A chronograph pocket watch, inscribed N.E.R, No1, part of the equipment on the North Eastern Railway dynomoniter car built in 1903, which became the main locomotive testing car of the LNER. The watch was acquired by Sir Vincent Raven, Chief Mechanical Engineer of the NER when the car was built and was used by Sir Nigel Gresley as his personal measuring instrument on locomotive performance tests. The watch was used during the world speed record run in 1938 where Mallard achieved 126 m.p.h. It is sold by the family of the late Mr Beresford, who worked with Gresley, and later O.V.S. Bulleid. A signed, framed photograph of Sir Nigel accompanies the lot. £500-800 |
