A builders plate, WALLIS & STEEVENS, BASINGSTOKE, 7638, from a 4¼ ton steam tractor with compound cylinders, built to a design known as Oilbath i.e. the motion was encased in oil. It was supplied new on 15 November 1919, registration number HO 2621, to a Mr A Butler of Station Road, Henley on Thames, Oxfordshire who was a haulage contractor. It had several subsequent owners and spent the remainder of its working life in Berkshire and Hampshire. It survived the demise of road steam vehicles in the 1930s and is currently preserved in Hampshire and named ALICE. Engraved brass, 10"x8½" the front lightly polished. £150-300 |
