A nameplate, GEOFFREY H KITSON, from a LNER B1 Class 4-6-0 No 1237 built by the North British Locomotive Co, Works No 26138, in September 1947, becoming BR 61237. It was named in December 1947 at Darlington Stooperdale after the LNER Director (1937-47) and member of the famous Leeds based locomotive builders who died on 7 November 1974. Allocated new, and appropriately, to Leeds Neville Hill where it spent its first thirteen years, its later sheds were Gateshead, Sunderland, Blaydon, Tyne Dock, Ardsley and Wakefield from where it was withdrawn on 6 December 1966 and sold for scrap to Arnott Young at Parkgate & Rawmarsh on 16 February 1967. Cast brass, 47" long, the front repainted; the middle initial has clearly been altered from N to H by the railways. £6000-8000 |
