A nameplate, KING STEPHEN, from the GWR 4000 Star Class 4-6-0 No 4029 built at Swindon in October 1909 and named after the King of England who was a grandson of William the Conqueror and reigned from 1135 until 1154. Following the introduction of the King Class in 1927, it was renamed THE SPANISH MONARCH in July 1927, altered without THE later the same year. One of the earliest of the Class to go, it was withdrawn from service in November 1934 and cut up at Swindon Works. The splasher has been repainted many years ago. £9000-12000 |
