A nameplate, HOME GUARD, from a LMS Class 6P Patriot 4-6-0 No 5543, BR 45543, built at Crewe in 1934 and named at a ceremony at Euston station on 30 July 1940 by Lt Gen Sir Henry Pownall, Inspector-General of the Home Guard, the first such ceremony after the outbreak of war, and one of the Class not subsequently rebuilt with tapered boiler. Allocated new to Crewe North on 16 March 1934, its later sheds included Patricroft, Carlisle Upperby, Edge Hill, Lancaster and Carnforth from where it was withdrawn in the week ending 17 November 1962 and cut up at Crewe Works by 30 August 1963. Cast brass, 34½" long, the front repainted. £7000-9000 |
