A nameplate, BANBURY CASTLE, from the (GWR) 4073 Castle Class 4-6-0 No 7011 built at Swindon in June 1948 and named after the long demolished Castle which once stood in the centre of the North Oxfordshire town. Allocated new to Bristol Bath Road on 17 June 1948 where it remained for eleven years before moving to Shrewsbury and then in October 1959 to Banbury where, sadly, it only stayed for six months, departing to Cardiff Canton and later Worcester, Reading and Oxley from where it was withdrawn on 9 February 1965 and taken for scrap by Cashmores at Great Bridge on 22 April 1965. £12000-15000 |
