A nameplate, COUNTY OF CHESTER, from the Great Western Railway 38XX County Class 4-4-0 No 3814 built at Swindon in November 1906 and named County of Cheshire when built but renamed in May 1907. It was withdrawn in June 1933 and subsequently scrapped at Swindon Works. This is one of only a dozen or so nameplates known to have survived from a class of forty engines named after English, Welsh and Irish counties and only the fourth to appear in auction. The top rear beading has the letter R. pin stamped into the brass, indicating this is the right hand plate. £8000-12000 |
